Favorite Japanese in New York City 12/27/2010

Wow. Really love this place. From the elegance and subtlety of the sushi to the informative and well chosen sake menu. It's too hard to pick favorites here so I will leave that up to you :) more

Simple Japanese Elegance made comfortable 2/13/2010

The decor was very japanese. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the sake menu was to read with friendly and imaginative descriptions. The sushi and cooked entrees were all deliscious. I had the king salmon sashimi appetizer which was fresh. My favorite part of the meal was the miso braised short ribs. The meat was so flavorful and falling off the bone. The green tea tiramisu was also a good spin on an Italian dessert. I would definitely recommend Matsuri to other people and plan to come here again. Pros: Miso Braised Short Ribs Cons: Entrance was a slight challenge to find when buzzed... more

Once is not enough 3/9/2009

This place is a hot spot. I walked in on a Friday night with no reservations, and got a table in 5 minutes. The place was packed with an energetic crowd that made my experience here 10 times better. To some it up the sake was great, the food was to die for, and the service unbelievable. I wish I could have taken home the chef so i wouldn't have to cook anymore. That's how good the food was. Recommendation- Sake Black Cod, and Sea Bass Pros: Food, and Celeb's Cons: You eventually have to leave more

Once is enough! 3/3/2009

This is definitely not the place to go if you truly enjoy japanese home-style cooking. We ordered a side of lotus roots and the preparation was completely off. Instead of a cruncy, flavorful starter, every bite was mushy and some even gooey. I love uni and order it everywhere I go, at $7 a piece I expected the uni to be nothing but fresh, one bite and the slime just covered my tongue even though I tried to wash it off with beer it lingered. The rock shrimp tempura appetizer had bits and pieces of ambigious looking shrimp. The cocktail I ordered was atrocious, it took everything in me to finish it since I was chocking down three huge (and very dry) portions of the yellow tail entree. The recommended sake was also horrible, perhaps I shouldn't have gone by the glass, but at $11 I figured it couldn't be bad, but it was. The whole lobster entree wasn't quite whole, I think the claws were missing and some other essential lobster parts. I have to say that the only redeemable thing about the place was the 18 grain rice ball. The decor and the staff, all of whom were very nice made me embarassed to return my drink and entree. Going once is enough to realize that the place is all hype. more

Insanely tasty 12/22/2008

amazing sushi, better than megu or morimoto. Large atmosphere, but never seems empty. Just let them bring whatever the chef feels makes the best tasting menu and you will have a phenomenal meal. If not going as heavy, the sushi is great too and very fresh. Great sake menu with seasonal selections. Pros: Sushi, People, Price, and Decor Cons: None besides they actually close. Wish it could stay open all day. more

Stunning 12/22/2008

A stunning venue, it seems to be in a whale belly, with beautiful paper lights hanging from the high ceiling. Certainly surprising as it is the food, not only standard sushi fare but also new inventive plates. A very good Sake, and wine list. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Horrible 10/17/2008

Been there once, and it is enough. Yes it is a touristy joint and I suppose I should have expected this, but the mediocrity under a false pretense? why?? I don't know what the people below have been smoking but the food here is simply not good . It just tasted bad. I have ordered different things, over and over again hopelessly trying to score a better plate however... no success. The next dish was worse the one before. Same for my friends. I am sorry but NOT WORTH it. BTW, drinks weren't good either. They just don't care. People with no idea about food will come there wearing their tight muscle shirts and girls with tasteless makeup, and be happy. That's the way the cookie crumbles. Pros: can't think of any. Cons: overrated, overpriced, bad fish, pretentious, simply bad more

Fantastic place 10/10/2008

Wow. Just... wow. Some of the best fish I've ever had. Yes, it's expensive. But it is SO worth it! The sashimi platter my friend and I shared was delictable. I've been to just about every sushi place around here and this is, hands down, the best. They also make their own pickled ginger. And there was fresh wasabi. Which is kick you in your butt fantastic! Pros: wasabi, food, service more

Barely avarage sushi place 10/5/2008

I wanted to take a chance on a lesser known restaraunt, as I had never heard of Matsuri I looked it up to find a great menu and pictures of the space. Upon arrving I could immediately see this place was a bit more run down and less elegant than the pictures actually showed. We waitied a bit for a table even though I had made a reservation. We were then seated on what seemed like benches covered with thin patio furntire padding. The food we ordered was farely common and was prepared as if we were eating in our neighborhood sushi place (the sushi would have actually been better had it come from our neighboor hood place). Absolutely nothing stood out at this place at all, I would have much rather have had what I am sure would have been yet another phenomenal time at Buddakn or Buddha Bar right now the street. more

Just a great place! 7/14/2008

Nothing much to say here except it was a great place. Good food, good service, good drinks. I will most def return again! Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Great Date Place 6/17/2008

Even though the place is really big, each table is quite personal and private. I had a first date there and it was a really nice place. Had a drink at the bar and then ate dinner....the food was good and the service was good as well. more

wonderful experience 5/18/2008

My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday night for a birthday dinner. We ordered sashimi/sushi platter for two and it was amazing. the fish was fresh, the presentation was great, and an interesting/impressive variety. We were serviced by a very attentive and friendly server, and we really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. Everything about/in the restaurant was authentic - this is definitely our new favorite sushi spot! Pros: price, quality of fish, service, ambience Cons: nothing more

Great food, great scene, great service 3/2/2008

I've never been the most enthusiastic fan of sushi and fish dishes, but Matsuri went a long way to changing that. The food was sensational and the staff went out of their way for us. Highly recommend it. more

Great sushi and atmosphere 3/1/2008

I have ate at many Sushi places (incuding Japan) and Masturi nailed it. Great atmosphere, attentive staff and excellent food. Not just the regular California rolls, but interesting, tasty dishes with great presentation. Pros: Great food and atmosphere Cons: very popular, make a reservation more

Best cocktails in town 2/27/2008

I've eaten at Matsuri five or six times in the last year and each time I have been absolutely amazed. When a restaurant is this good, time after time, you know they are top notch. The sushi is masterly prepared and quite novel with beautiful presentation. Oh, and it tastes incredible! I tried dozens of items off the menu and have never been disappointed. Lastly, I just can't say enough about their ginger sakinade. This is my new favorite cocktail. It is a true 'must try'! more

Simply the best Japanese 2/26/2008

An exciting, spacious and vibrant room, extremely attentive and prompt service, innovative drinks, an incredible diversity of sake and the sushi is out of this world - fresh with a nice presentation. This is simply the best Japanese restaurnat that I have experienced. This was my 10th visit - I come every time I visit NY -and the experience is consistently top notch. You have to experience Matsuri! Pros: great room, innovative food and drinks, incredible service more

Best sushi, best sake, best ambiance 2/25/2008

You have not had a sushi dining experience until you dine at Matsuri, in the Maritime Hotel. I just had the most fantastic dining experience. Whether you are with a group or on a romantic escapade, this restaurant has it all. Two thumbs up for the chef. Their sake selection was delightful. A dining experience you must experience when visiting NY city. more

  • Thin, curving wood beams cover the ceiling, lending a sense of flowing grace to the cavernous space. The bar is perched high above the dining room; tables near the railing are prime for people-watching. Down a steep set of stairs, a sushi bar hides at one end of a dining room packed with attractive Meatpacking District regulars. Service is a bit haphazard at the front door, but smoother once seated. Sushi and sashimi are made with admirably fresh fish, but Chef Tadashi Ono's Japanese fare is the true draw: silken yellowtail in bright yuzu pepper sauce, dotted with wasabi; thin slices of raw Kobe-style beef adorned with just a bit of mustard sauce; and a play on the traditional sushi roll with chopped eel replacing rice and thin strips of cucumber acting as nori. Among the large plates, sumptuous, silky sake-marinated cod and whole fried sea bass stand out.
