We called ahead of time and reserved a 2/17/2012

We called ahead of time and reserved a table for 2. I had my brother in town and wanted to take him somewhere special. He had just landed and been on a long flight from over seas. SO being exhausted and thinking this would be the perfect place. In all our years of dining this was a NIGHTMARE! We arrived at the restaurant literally 10 late. The hostess told me that she didn't see our reservation. When I explained the exact time, she snidely remarked that we were late, and doubted that we'd be able to get a table. Both my brother and I would have left under normal circumstances, but considering he hadn't slept in almost 24 hours nor eaten, we just stood there dumbfounded and continued the abuse (from the hostess). We asked why we would not be seated and she said, "Well, I guess I can seat you, but there is a "time" limit on your table since your late." I think we were in such shock over her curt, blunt and outlandish rude behaviour , that we just asked to have a seat and eat. The hostess seemed to be on a mission to destroy our Saturday evening. My brother asked the hostess if she hated her job so much, why was she there. She quickly snapped back and said, "I am the OWNER." I guess if this is how the owner behaves, we have no reason to think this place ever stands a chance. For a bill over $125 for 2 people, slow service, sub par food and a vicious, nasty, self righteous hostess owner, we'll never return. I am shocked this place is still in business. If you value a true atmosphere with warm and enjoyment, great food and fair prices, this place isn't for you! However, if you're okay with arrogance, slow service and an owner who treats the customers like garbage, than give it a try! We'd rate it 0 stars if that were an option. Pros: null Cons: null more

Portland Sushi at Masu 5/17/2011

I had the pleasure of dining at Masu in Portland while on a business trip. The food and service was absoutely outstanding! I will be dreaming of the "Death by Sushi Roll" when I get back home to the East Coast. Thank you to Rory for being an awesome server - and if you ever see this, you were totally dreamy! more

Disappointed 2/27/2011

I used to love this place and after over a year hiatus, stopped by for dinner last night. Everything was great except the Spanish mackerel that I ordered as an appetizer. Things happen; I know that, meaning that when the appetizer arrived after the dinner was served, I was ok with that. But when the owner Maria, tries to lie about why it took so long, that isn?t ok. Having ordered this appetizer many times before, the restaurant clearly messed up, but Maria took the easy way out and lied about a server error. This is not ok. Makes me wonder about the restaurant integrity and I won?t be back! more

nothing was platted correctly. one salad came, then an entre. we had ordered an appetizer that finally came at the end of the meal and the 2nd persons salad came with a third entre. Server never asked if we wanted a 2nd cocktail. recommend you dont put an appetizer on the menu that takes a long time to prepare. Pros: good sushi Cons: terrible service more

Nice decor, average sushi 2/22/2009

While in Portland for the weekend, we decided to check out Masu based on reviews at citysearch. The prices were about average for this type of sushi place, the sushi itself was average at best. The service was fine; I don't think we had the same person at our table more than once, not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing but they were all friendly (one woman even went to her co-workers to come up with some recommendations for some good places for us to check out after). I loved the decor, especially the wall behind the sushi bar. Nice music, too, and I have to give them props for playing Hot Chip! Pros: Cool staff, nice ambience/decor Cons: Average sushi, poorly insulated (cold by the windows) more

so tasty and so yummy 1/30/2009

Masu is a great place for some very amazing sushi! I was at the sushi bar with my brother and we both decided before hand that we didn't want to spend to much money and to try and keep it cheap, knowing sushi is always expensive, and masu isn't exactly a family style old school japanese 50% off kinda place. It's hip and funky with alot of style right downtown, it's more along the lines of a place to be seen. So we started getting our order and as soon as we started eating we looked at each other and we just started laughing, because it was soooo.. Goood! We started with Hirame our favorite! My brother and I usually get sushi together because we can afford more and sample more. the Hirame was amazing I have to say. We even asked the sushi chef about it and he said that they special order it from japan every week for the weekend. we ate our dinner and everything was so good, we both couldn't remember the last time we had so much delicious sushi, every piece of nigiri was so fresh. My bro and i usually eat on the east side of town, but we decided to try and get back to masu ASAP!. Our plan to eat cheap didn't quite happen, only because we had to order more since it was so good. oops! Try the Aji and if you are downtown portland definitly try out masu sushi it's a winner!! definitly be going back.. Pros: So good and ti's really fun cool place to be Cons: the sushi bar only had 6 sits so next time i might have to wait more

Overrated 12/29/2008

I was very disappointed in dinner the other evening at Masu. I read the reviews and had heard good things about the restaurant. It did not materialize. The miso soup my daughter ordered never arrived. Her steak was done medium; that was my order. My steak was done well; that was her order. I ordered curry in my udon. The broth tasted burnt and there was no curry flavor. My wife ordered the curry rice with vegetables. She got two pieces of corn and a piece of potato. The sake menu is over priced. Given the number of good Japanese restaurants, I see no reason to go back. This was over priced, over hyped and under whelming. Pros: I cannot think of any. Cons: Mixed up orders; average food. more

i went last night dinning room was a little slow but it was snowing out and not a lot of people on the town anyway! it worked out perfect for me fast service amazing food, excellent sushi and a beautiful experience! Pros: from the water to the bill all around delicious Cons: wanted to stay but had to go more

love the sushi! love the chefs! 12/18/2008

my favorite sushi bar in town bar none! I always sit at the sushi bar (because it's a sushi bar and thats where you sit if you want the best fish) but the chefs behind the counter r amazing! wonderful skills, wonderful fish, theres always something new to try or a new twist on an old favorite. Try it, you'll love it just let the boys behind the sushi bar take care of you. Don"t waste your time and money at a table, the severs dont care about you it seems, but those boys have some passion and they will spoil you. if u love good fish and like good dinner conversation go to masu and sit at the sushi bar and dont be afraid to order kitchen items they will tell u whats the best, but everythings so good anyway. im a big fan and i love sushi Pros: amazing sushi amazing chefs Cons: some server with large glasses! (sorry) more

Highly Recommend 11/8/2008

If you want super fresh sushi go to Masu. I ate there with my husband who's a sushi chef with 10 years experience, and even he was impressed with the quality of their fish and the knowledge of their chefs. Don't listen to reviewers who site Koji and Sinju as excellent sushi, they have some of the lowest quality fish out there. The service was a little spotty, but if you like sashimi and nigiri this is the place to go. Pros: Fresh Fish, excellent Sashimi and Nigiri Cons: Service is spotty, but friendly more

Delicious Sushi, Lame Service 11/8/2008

A good friend of mine introduced me to Masu last weekend. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant a lot and it was pretty busy which is usually a good sign. I've had sushi from several places in the Portland area (Mio,Sushi, Dragonfish, Saucebox) and I think Masu's definately met my expectations. I like their specialty rolls which have great combinations. I think their rolls (and food in general) are a little overpriced. The wait staff was slow although I didn't happen to mind on this night because of the company I was with from the looks of other reviews this isn't abnormal for Masu to have not-so-great service. I also asked for no crab in one of the rolls and it ended up coming with crab anyways. The waitress also seemed a annoyed and put out when we asked for more water. The drinks were nothing to rave about. I will probably return to this Masu in the future, but I will not go out of my way to dine here. more

Poor Service 11/5/2008

I have been to Masu many times as I enjoy the fresh sushi, however last Friday will be my last visit. The service has always been sub-standard but I have overlooked this as I enjoy the food. On Friday, I had brought in some friends from out of town and we waiting for at least 20 mins before we got to order a drink, then it took forever to get the drinks. The meal was fine when we got it however ,when we went to split the bill, we explained to the waitress how we wanted it (no - we did not have many cards, just 3) she said she understood the split however when she returned to the table she did it completely wrong, when we explained it was wrong she said "well my dear, how was I supposed to know how to do it? I'm not good at math". I found her comment extremely irritating and to rub salt into the wound when I saw the charge to my bank account this evening, my charge is more than $5 over what I authorized, meaning that someone changed it after the fact. Unfortunately I did not keep my receipt otherwise I would return. I am now disgusted. The overcharge is small - but it is wrong! Might be a good idea to find better service staff.... more

Fresh sweet fish - Sour service 7/16/2008

In from out of town I gave this a try on a sugestion from hotel staff. The fish was nice and fresh, but I'm used to having some reparte with a sushi chef when sitting at the bar. There were two chefs who were buried in order tickets from tables. These guys were working in such a fury to get stuff to the tables that I was pleasently suprised to receive a greeting after sitting for a couple of minutes. Stone faced throughout, with sub-par knife skills, chef served me large hunks of relatively tasty but unweildly and uninspired sushi. Pros: fresh Cons: poor service more
