Amazing Thai Cuisine 8/29/2006

Delicious Thai cuisine in a very enjoyable setting. Servers are very enthusiastic and energetic. Angel wings are amazing as well as the chicken pra ram. Meal is greatly complemented by a thai iced tea. Dozens of other delicious items available. more

fantastic thai, wonderful hostess 8/27/2006

Neighborhod hot-spot, great food, great hostess, fast, cheerful service. This place was jam-packed when we arrived, and Marnee herself welcomed us. The best thai for the money I've had anywhere. Marnee was a kick too, she seems to know everyone in the place, and by the time you leave she'll know you too. The food alone will bring you back, but you might just have to go back to visit Marnee. Cons: small, crowded more

Best Thai Around 8/23/2006

I've never been disappointed with the food here. Consistently the best Thai around. Not too sweet and pretty spicy. More authentic than most Thai restaurants. Pros: Price, Taste more

Best Pad Thai 8/16/2006

The food is delicious. It has a traditional Thai feeling to it and every dish they serve there is unique and delicious. It is also inexpensive and a great place to take kids Pros: good food, value, warm service Cons: Hostlady screaming out orders and ordering her workers more

Pumpkin curry?...Who knew? 8/11/2006

Alright, listen!! If you are an epicurian or if you just want a good face reading...see May at Marnee Thai. No joke, this is the best Thai food I have ever had and that's a lot of Thai food. Not only were the samosas "damn good!" but the whole meal, including an out of this world pumpkin curry chicken, was SUPERIOR. Well, when you think it's over and you will die happy, don't be surprised if May reads your face on the way out. I heard her do it to another customer and secretly longed for it throughout the meal. She was dead on and she works the place like a maestro works a strings section! My partner John & I are from Philadelphia and the next time we are in San Francisco we will make a point to see May and feast at the fabulous and completely unassuming Marnee Thai. more

Best Thai Restaurant 8/6/2006

My friends and I had lunch here this last weekend and they loved it! It has been five years since the first time I came to this place and I was so amazed to see that not much has change since then. Even when is packed on the weekends the food and the service are worth the wait for a table. The place still has that beautiful inviting and cozy look and the food was even more delicious than before. It is just a great experience to dine with family or friends here and so perfect for a first date dinner. I recommending this place to all of my friends and definitely plan to go back more often! more

Authentic food and fortunes told! 8/3/2006

What a fabulous restaurant! Even the densest fog in the sunset can't dampen the warm and inviting decor of this thai restaurant. The food was delicious (angel wings are one of their specialties and are to die for) and the people really make it a place to go back to again and again! I ate there twice in one week, had some wonderful thai dishes and even had my fortune told. It is a very special place! I foresee a lot of thai food in my future! Pros: Great decor, great food Cons: None more

best thai/ one of best meals i've ever had 7/27/2006

OUTSTANDING dishes, every one of the 5 entrees (yellow curry w/chicken, bbq pork, prawns w/green beans, chicken w/spinach in peanut sauce, etc.), 3 apps(corn cakes, angel wings, garden rolls), and 2 desserts (I prefered the Roti w/coconut ice cream to the fried banana w/same)we shared at our table. Each dish was a very different flavorful treat, I just couldn't believe there were no duds. It seemed reasonably priced, too. It was quite crowded and we showed up w/o a reservation but we got lucky and were seated in 10-15 minutes. Fast, friendly, attentive staff. Quite helpful with recommendations to balance out our meal. I can not wait to go back when I next visit SF and I will recommend it to my friends. You guys are lucky to have this place! Pros: exceptional food, period. Cons: you might have to wait to get aforementioned exceptional food, make a reservation if possible more

BEST AUTHENTIC THAI IN TOWN 7/27/2006

The decor is beautiful and takes you back to Thailand. The service is excellent - Marnee is an excellent and gracious hostess! The food is the best in town. I love the Hor Mok - fish in coconut sauce and wrapped in banana leaves. If you like shrimp, the shrimp in a blanket is deeelicious! If you need help, ask Marnee to order for you....she can read what you like and bring you the best selection of dishes tailor-made for you. You won't be disappointed. Love this place! more

Best Thai Food 7/25/2006

I have been eating at Marnee Thai for 6 years now. It is the best thai food in SF. Their Angel wings, tom yum soup and papaya salad are my favorites. Also, their Roti desert with ice cream is the BEST. You can't find it anywhere. Whenever Mae is in the restaurant, it feels like you're in mom's kitchen, as she makes you feel so welcome and always recommends the best dishes of the night. It gets crowded, especially on weekends, but they now have two locations. Great Food every time! Pros: Great Food Cons: Parking more

my fav thai restaurant in the city 7/24/2006

I love this place, not only is the food really good, but the decorations and atmosphere are really nice. It can get a little crowded on a busy night, but its definitely all worth it once you taste the angel wings. The chan pad poo is so good with just enough kick and I love the garlic pork. Practically everything I've tried there has been really good. Pros: angel wings Cons: sometimes there's a wait on the weekends more

Best thai food in town 7/22/2006

My friends and I had a chance to visit Manee Thai on 9th avenue last week. Their waitress kindly seated us at the beautiful back room where will be opened only the place is filled. It was a busy night, so many people enjoyed their time along with wonderful meals. We tried angle wings and corn cakes as our appetizers. They made us stunned when they served them !! Good texture and the taste is definetly good. The entr'ees are wordless too describe; fortunately, we didn't miss the Mango sticky rice and Fried banana with ice-cream which they call FBI. I just wonder when will they have IRS. I will personally eat the whole plate of it : ) more

Simply the best Thai Food I've ever had 7/22/2006

This place is phenomenal. Everything I've had has been completely delish. If I'm not careful, I will stuff myself to groaning because there's so many yummy dishes I want to try. Pros: Food Is Excellent, Good Value for your $ Cons: Parking can be an Issue - Common to Irving St though more

Crowded, but great food 7/21/2006

Great food and lively ambiance. Be prepared to be very friendly with your neighboring diners! Overall a fun experience in dining and excellent dishes. Good value more

I love it when she yells!! 7/18/2006

Each time I've been to Marnee the food has been delicious. We've received prompt service each time I've gone. Yes, it's crowded - so make a reservation. If you have food allergies - you probably shouldn't be eating out that much anyway. If you don't like volume & energy - don't go to Marnee!! This works out great because that means more seating for those of us who love it there! Soft shell crab with Mango salad and spicy wings, Yu-um!!! Pros: Everything is delicious Cons: Irving street in general more

Viva Marnee Thai! 7/18/2006

I have been going to Marnee Thai for over 15 years now with my family. They are one of the oldest Thai restaurants in San Francisco and their longevity is a testament to the quality of their food and service. Weekends can be crowded but the hostess is always helpful and makes sure that everyone that's waiting is taken care of. The recent reviews about the owner's wife are surprising because everytime we've been there she's been courteous to us and has always received compliments from the customers about her friendly demeanor. It's interesting how many customers leave praising the restaurant but very few take the time to write reviews, however as soon as something goes wrong most are quick to judge from their first experience. If you're looking for delicious Thai food in the Bay Area that's not "fusion" or some sort of generic Asian food then you should definitely give Marnee Thai a try. You'll be impressed with their service and willingness to listen to their customers as well. An example is their new addition of brown rice to their menu, many of their customers were requesting it so they've started serving it now alongside with jasmine rice. Their weekly specials are to die for and the appetizers always leave you wanting more. Pros: Tasty Thai Food, Speedy Service Cons: Parking more

Wonderful food, colorful service! 7/18/2006

Great, inexpensive Thai food. Chef/owner has won many international prizes. Front of the house is driven by the Mrs./ owner...NOT named Marnee, but Mai. She's a vibrant personality, making suggestions, reading your vibe, and your face, and more. If you're looking for a low-key private dining experience, this is probably not it. Mai is part of the show, and that's what the crowds are looking for. Weekends are a bit crowded. They now have a second location on 9th ave, between Irving and Lincoln. Highly recommended. If you're a grouch, I recommend IHOP.If ya wanna have a good time and some good food, try Marni Thai! more

The best Thai food outside of Thailand, try #7 the spicy angel wings Yummy!! 7/18/2006

I have been going to Marnee Thai since they opened 13 years ago. Everything on the menu is to die for. I am moving to Las Vegas and I alreadyam planning a trip back to SF to go to Marnee Thai to eat. My family and I usually order carry out because we order so much, one time our order was $289.00. We like to bring it home and eat it for dinner, then we will have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner the next day. What can I say I LOVE Marnee Thai, and I love the people that work there. I am a regular and they know me by name, everyone there is so nice and how can you go wrong when the foog is so good!!!! I want to let every one know that they should eat here and they should tell their friends to eat there too. I wish I could have the #7 spicy angel wings every day. I could go on and on and tell you that this is the best food in the world, but you will have to try it for your-self and then you will see, no taste what I am talking about. My motto, got Thai, no got Marnee? Pros: food, taste, employees Cons: zero more

Excellent food. Can't wait to go back 7/17/2006

Just tried Marnee Thai-Irving St. this past weekend and I was pleasantly surprised. All of the dishes we ordered were delicious (spicy angel wings, soft shell crab w/ mango salad, po tak, & F.B.I.). Im looking forward to going back and trying more of the great sounding dishes on the menu. The place was noisy and crowded just as people have said. To be expected so not an issue for me. The owner was running the show, giving recommendations and chatting it up with customers - she added some fun & energy to our experience. One of my new favorite restaurants. Pros: great food, reasonably priced Cons: crowded more

Best Thai Food and Incredible Atmosphere! 7/14/2006

I just moved to this neighborhood and all my friends said, you're so lucky that you'll be so close to Marnee Thai. . . I wondered hmm, better try it if they all rave so much. From my first step into this delightful restaurant I felt I had exited San Francisco and landed in a new country! The decor creates such a special atmosphere! I got there while it was full, but Mei, the hostess with the mostest, was quick with a cold beer and we got a table ten minutes later. Their menu has so many delicious dishes to offer that it becomes hard to choose! Oh well, I'll just have to go back again and again until I've had them all! I'll tell you my favorite then! Thank you Marnee Thai! You're my new favorite neighbor! Pros: Inexpensive, great food, quick service and very friendly staff! more

Owner Message
  • When Chai Siriyam opened his celebrated Marnee Thai restaurant in San Francisco in 1986, he hoped to give his patrons a taste of Thai cuisine and culture so transporting that they could enjoy the country?s wonders without ever having to leave the neighborhood. His plan worked. Ad yet more than twenty years on, Chef Chai?s artistry and balanced hand with Thailand?s inimitable cuisine may in fact have sent just as many newly minted Thai-food enthusiasts to his homeland as they?ve brought through his restaurant door.

    The Taste of Thailand
Skilled Thai cooks have an almost sixth sense for synthesizing disparate flavor elements into a seamless, unified, utterly balanced whole. And that?s not something they?ve achieved by accident. Thai cuisine has been developing as long as has Thailand itself, and over that time, it?s practitioners have learned which ingredients counter others, when to pair something mild with something heavy, and when to balance something hot with something s weet.

The chief tools of this edible art are the herbs, spices, roots, shoots and other ingredients that comprise the Thai cook?s seasoning armamentarium. There?s nothing particularly mysterious or exceptional about the contents of the Thai pantry. Ingredients like cilantro, kaffir lime leaf, sweet basil, mint, lemongrass, coriander seed, cumin, peppercorns, garlic, galangal, ginger, chilies, tamarind, shallots, coconut milk palm sugar, dried shrimp, and fish sauce are common coin throughout SE Asia.. The North
Slow-simmered,smoothly seasoned comfort foods make Northern Thai cooking stand out; creamy curries and coconut milk soups; meats and vegetables with a tangy edge of lime; little ground-pork sausages called name; and the regional predilection for sweet glutinous rice, steamed and rolled into palm-sized balls that are handy for dipping into pungent relishes and sauces.

    The Northeast
Thailand?s barren, rugged North-lying just across the Mekong River from Laos and Cambodia-got dealt a tough hand with its unforgiving landscape. The irony of it all is that despite its obvious unsuitability to farming, the area developed mainly on an agricultural model. But while the Northeast, also called the Isan, remains Thailand?s least economically prosperous region, culinarily,it?s a diner?s dream.

    The South
This narrow strip of land stretching from Central Thailand down to Malaysia is a little bit of paradise nestled between the Indian Ocean on the west and the Gulf of Thailan d on the east. Southern Thailand promises a lush natural bounty and conditions ideal for growing tropical produce.

    The Central Plains
The Chao Phraya River Valley in Thailand?s Central Plain is both rice bowl and produce market to the country. Yet it?s squeezed up against the 21st-century metropolitan city of Bangkok. This region is home to Thailand?s palace cuisine, while also laying claim to one of Asia?s most enticing street-food scenes.
