I sent the following information to Marina Park Grill, but the manager failed to respond.
When we arrived, the hostess was telling guests that the tables inside were reserved for an event, and she was unable to seat anybody outside because of full capacity. Apparently she could not put anybody else on the wait list, but we were able to sit in the bar.
We received our drinks relatively quickly, but nobody returned to take our order. We waited 10-15 minutes before I had to tell somebody that we wanted to order food. We waited quite awhile for our food before it finally arrived. The only people who were attentive to our table were the person pouring water and another server. Everybody else completely ignored us.
I saw a woman setting the tables in the dining area and asked if she was setting up for an event. She replied no, and it was apparent that no large party was going to show up. When we paid our check the bartender failed to thank us.
Restaurants that display good customer service would have done the following:
1) Tell guests up front that the problem is understaffing. This would have been understandable since the weather was so nice.
2) Be more attentive to people sitting at the tables in the bar, not just at the bar
3) Offer a free appetizer, dessert, or a gift certificate to compensate for the lack of service
4) Thank the customers
Furthermore, if I knew that I was going to receive such poor service, I would have gladly sat in the dining area rather than next to a wall in the bar.
As we left, somebody at the bar thanked us for coming and said that next time the restaurant would have more staff. I can understand when a restaurant is short staffed, but as a courtesy, you should be honest with customers up front.
Pros: Ambience, if you are not sitting next to a wall at the bar
Cons: Customer service
