Visited Maria Pia with my family last Friday. In a word...RUDE. Maybe because we didn't make reservations we weren't welcome, but we had to wait at the bar for a table, which is...

A good experience 11/22/2010

Our group of 16 was celebrating our annual family winter dining and matinee theater day in the City. We choose Maria Pia because it was close to the Gershwin theatre. Some of the reviews made us a bit nervous, but our experience was fine! We ordered from the lunch menu which was varied enough to suit everyone - even the kids. The service was attentive and responsive to our requests. We enjoyed our lunch and will be repeat visitors to the restaurant. more

Too noisy 11/6/2010

I went there with my parents on a Saturday night. they were very stingy about the bread, and the service was a bit disorganised. Most of all, it was really noisy, and they still decided to put some music to make the situation worse. My parents could not have a conversation without repeating each sentence 3 times. The food was ok but my mum's salmon was too dry. more

Avoid at all costs 10/6/2008

This was my second visit to this place and definitely the last one. Everything that could go wrong eventually did. Cons: service, food, unsanitary conditions more

Great desert menu 3/16/2008

We were give nabroadway. special deal as a gift it included hotel , broadway show, and dinner at a choice of ten resturants every resturant I googled had pretty bad reviews Maria pri stood out it had some pretty good reveiws . So we tryed it when we arrived I had previously had made reservations 6 days prior for 6 O'clock . ""YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS BECAUSE IT IS A SMALL RESTURANTS WITH ALOT OF WALK IN'S "" When we walked in the staff was very polite and asked us if we had reservations and said it would be a few minutes it was only around a 15 minute wait which was'nt bad . we sat at the bar which was cozy it was a great little resturant very clean I felt like we were in Italy!!!!!!!!!!! The staff servers were great polite asked if we had our dinner vouchers and handed us a prefixed menu , which had alot to offer as far as selection we brought our to kids with us ages 7 and 12 and them being so picky eaters they managed to find foods that they really like also . The waiter polite and always checking to see if everything was O.K. ""WITH THIS FOOD VOUCHER ALL THE TAXES AND GRATUTIES WERE INCLUDED' but since we had such great service we felt we should take care of the waiter. LET ME ALSO MENTION NOT ONCE DID THEY TRY TO PUSH SOMETHING OFF THE WAS ON THE REGULAR MENU OR ANY TYPE OF LIQUIR. Will definetly go back to dine at maria pria . Pros: great ambience more

Not impressed after the hype 11/20/2007

Visited Maria Pia with my family last Friday. In a word...RUDE. Maybe because we didn't make reservations we weren't welcome, but we had to wait at the bar for a table, which is no problem, but we felt like we were in the way and weren't offered drinks while we waited. We were seated and the food was good but not great. The place seemed very touristy which is not really my thing. We had a table too close to the kitchen and bathroom traffic, but what do you expect in New York, small restaurant, we took what we could get. Manager never visited our table but seemed interested in other patrons and their enjoyment. Won't be back. Pros: cute space Cons: rudeness, service more

Just Don't 7/17/2007

The garden is pretty; the house red wine is very good. Pros: Pretty garden Cons: The food more

A STAR shinning in Theater District 5/13/2007

I was very sceptic to try Maria Pia after I read some bad reviews about, but I tried it. I think that from the moment that we sat to the momrnt that we left was never a dull moment. We sat by the window which gave us a better view of the street. The waiter came by told us the fiew specials and said that if we wanted something else to be free to ask (our chef makes everything) he said. We ordered as he recommended. We started with a apple salad and cured meat abbondanza, thaqt shared a pasta made with mushroom and than for main course we had the calf's liver, the steak and the rissoto. The evening went exellent and what made so good was the waiter that used to pull jokes which made it memorable. I think our waiter was albanian but his italian was perfect and in our table we had also other waiter that came and said hello. Pros: EVERYTHING Cons: NOTHING more

Nothing Special 4/13/2007

Currently on a fresh pasta binge I sought a Midtown restaurant and came across Pia Maria online. I met a friend there and found the place pleasant and average. The food was alright but nothing extraordinary, I had the lobster ravioli which contained chunky pieces of meat and a tomatoey sauce. My friend had the fish special with spinach - she said the fish was bland but enjoyed the veggies. If you need somewhere Midtown this place is okay, and, not particulary overpriced. Generous portions, good service, average food. Pros: Location more

very good food exellent service 3/17/2007

I ate at this cozy and mouthwatering italian restaurant twice this week and it was exceptional on foo and service.if you need to eat something before or after theater don't hesitate to go to this great italian fare. It is good for anytime of the day with a pretty gorgious menu and great service.tyr ther mussels and clam stew or their antipasto mix (dry meat and cheeses) and don't forget the Polpo. For your main course try Rissoto Pescatore or the calfs liver with balsamic reduction. If you like italian you will love their pasta from the lobster ravioli to their pappardelle with mushroom and truffle oil. Dessert ; indulge in their chocolate torte or their panna cotta. When it comes to their wine list its small and stuff is missing but the waiter Tony promised me that the wine list will get bigger. If you need recomendation on wine don't hesitate to ask and the same thing goes for food, plus the can make anything you want. I had a wondrful experience. Thank you Tony for the wine recomendation and thank you Alban for the hospitality. Pros: Great food Exceptional service more

cozy lil' place 3/2/2007

Maria Pia is conveniently located practically next door to my favorite musical, Wicked. Naturally, I have eaten there twice...Good and inexpensive Italian cuisine. It's a no-brainer for NYC! It offers an extensive wine list (no Reisling for boyfriend, though). Yummy goat cheese ravioli, breads for the table, and tasty delights for after the meal. Pros: cozy atmosphere more

Great venue, helpful staff, and most importantly good food 10/19/2006

Bit delayed writing this review but we celebrated our wedding here back in the summer. It was a Monday so we were able to reserve a large table at the back of the restaurant and so not disturb the other diners. The staff were very relaxed and permitted guests to drink around the bar longer than they could have. Pros: Food, Staff, Venue Cons: Not applicable on our visit! more

Nice Atmosphere/Large portions 8/24/2006

Nice Restaurant. Staff was pleasant. We made a reservation for 10 and they were very nice to add an 11th chair when we brought an extra person. Everyone enjoyed their food. A couple of picky teenagers with us and they were very happy. Portions are big - I recommend splitting which apparently they do. I wish we knew because a lot of food went to waste. I hate that! I had the lobster ravioli. It was just okay. Salad was very fresh and tasty. Overall a nice restaurant. Pros: Large Portions Cons: Large Portions more

Just like home. 4/3/2006

Maria Pia's food is delicious! The cavetelli bolognese was amazing. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the meat sauce was rich and favorful. The food tastes just like my what my Mom and Grandma used to make - earthy and authentic Italian. We were served promptly and the wait staff was very nice. I highly recommend this little jem of a resturant. Pros: Delicious Food, Prompt Service, Nice Atmosphere Cons: Bread tasted day old. more

Perfect Pre-Theater 1/29/2006

Dined here on Saturday 1/28/06 before the Theater. Reservations were for 6:30 and we arrived 15 minutes early. We were seated immediately, even though the place was packed. There is a 3 course Prix Fixe menu for $21.95 or you can order off the regular menu. Food was great, service was prompt. Seating is a little cramped, but that is the norm for a restaurant of this type in the Theater District. Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Prompt Service Cons: crowded more

Didn't even get to eat! 12/19/2005

We had a reservation for two but were told to wait at the bar. We each ordered a glass of wine, paid for them and waited 15 minutes to be seated. Once seated, we waited another 20 minutes in the busy restaurant without a server acknowledging our presence. We figured that although the menu looked good, it wasn't worth fighting to eat there. As we left without getting to order, we told the hostess what had happened, and all she could manage was an unapologetic ""sorry."" Pros: Good wine, Reasonable prices Cons: Long wait more

Great Food! Average Service... 11/20/2005

...I love Maria Pia's food, really Italian...really yummy! Unfortunately, the service is not at the same level of the food:-/ Last time I was there the bathrooms were not working, and my chair was broken. I complained to the manager, (his name is Mary...weird) and he didn't care AT ALL, and gave me a cold and rude answer...and it was not the first time dear Mary!!! The wait stuff is attentive though, the bartender was really nice and competent (her name is Jo...jaja a little gender confusion here) and the Maitre D' was a real HOT Italian model :-O Overall: WORTH TO TRY! Pros: HOT STUFF, GREAT FOOD, NICE PRICES Cons: MANAGEMENT, RESTAURANT CONDITIONS, ATTITUDE more

Diamond in the Rough 9/21/2005

When I was looking for this restaurant, I was distraught by the appearance of the street. But the moment I step down the stairs to Maria Pia, I forgot the ungliness of the street and was transformed to a delightful place. My friends and I were lucky enough to snatch the only four tops out in the little patio space. The food was absolutely YUMMY. The price was so cheap for the quality and quanity. Definately try the crab cake and Calamari Fritti for appetizer and the Shrimp and Scallop for Entree. Pros: Friendly Service, Cheap and Good, Not pretentious Cons: Drinks are expensive, small space more

Favorite dinner of trip 3/21/2005

My daughter and I were delighted with this ""find"". Everything about it was really nice. Pros: atmosphere, food, service more

Very good food, so-so on the service 3/6/2005

We sat down and immediately reached for the candles just to see each other the table was so dark. Now I know dark is romantic, but this was rediculous. My seat was directly under the heat and it was about 150 degrees. I asked the waiter if they could turn the heat down a bit. He said they couldn't, but we could switch tables. He brought us to the table right next to the kitchen, despite many other open tables. He could tell he didn't want to hear the cooks conversations, so he sat us next to the basement stairs, and luckily I was on the outside so I was the only one that had to smell the odor from downstairs (those of you that have worked in a restaraunt know what I mean). But, overall, the food was good, the prices great, just need to work on the service. Pros: food, price, reservations Cons: service more

Very cozy and great neighborhood spot 2/5/2005

We were going to go a few doors down to Vice Versa but got turned off by the crowd and how crowded it looked. We were in the mood for something more quiet and low key and went to Maria Pia. The menu sounds average, like you can find these dishes anywhere. The quality of them were good and satisfactory. Nothing crazy inventive or seductive. If you want something that's satisfying, good, and want to be able to relax and concentrate on your company and talk, this is a good place. more
