Great Bar for Punk and Garage Music Lovers 7/25/2010

Love this bar. My partner and I go there often just to hang out and have a few drinks and play music. Very cool, mature, low key, non pretentious crowd. Great atmosphere, cheap drinks and many cool pics on the walls. Most of the bars in this area are too trendy with over priced drinks, and the crowd is mostly made up of arrogant, young, annoying, snobby hipster types. At Manitobas, the crowd is all ages and the people are cool, "real", friendly people just out to have fun and socialize. Plus, Handsome Dick Manitoba is not bad on the eyes either, lol. Pros: Great jukebox, cheap drinks, Handsome Dick Manitoba Cons: None more

OK Gin Mill 12/17/2007

Manitobas is an ok,no frills gin mill. Some cool photos of old time punk rockers and a pretty good juke.Only thing is I was there at like, midnight on a friday and the place was almost empty.Probably a good spot to meet up with friends before heading for someplace more jumpin'. Pros: good juke-cool photos Cons: not too busy-seems kinda tired more

real deal 5/13/2007

best bar in the east village. good bartenders, good drinks. nothing fancy shamancy, but who needs it? I don't know what the person that wrote the bad review is talking about. the place doe not smell anyworse then half the trendy little overpriced bars in the village. People here are friendly, its defiently NOT yuppie, and if you've seen the jukebox you have no room to complain. Pros: great bartenders, authentic Cons: ? more

Laid-Back 4/2/2007

Let me start with a story: A few months ago, I was waiting on line at 7B for the bathroom, but it was taking forever. I think someone was either dying or screwing in there. Anyway, I needed to go, I skipped across the street to Manitoba's. Their bathroom was lineless, and I did my business and walked out. My friend and I noted, however, that some good music was playing. We left. Flash forward to this past Friday night. I was on my way to 7B again to play photohunt, and I had to use the facilities before I got there. I remembered the bad bathroom conditions at 7B, and the good bathroom conditions at Manitoba's, so I stopped in there first to use it. Yet again, a really good song was playing. My friend and I stayed for a beer and then noticed that Manitoba's, too, has photohunt (the bar computer game). Not only that, I checked out the jukebox and the awesome bartender had loaded it with money so that customers could go through it and pick some songs. I put on 7 songs, including Joan Jett's "Bad Repulation." When it came on, the bartender showed me a glossy photo of her that he had autographed and lemented that he couldn't find the right spot to put it. We gave each other 5. Well, anyway, Manitoba's is my favorite spot to have a beer, play Photohunt, listen to A+ punk rock, and use the bathroom. Highly recommended. Pros: Jukebox, friendly bartenders more

burned out 2/26/2007

This place is burned out. All the hip locals and musicians cleared out long ago.Now it's strictly for weekend yuppies rockers, sports bar types and tourists. The reviewer whose favorite feature was the "free air hockey' says it all. It's also a very "boys only' vibe and females avoid this bar.The fact that the place smells so bad doesn't help. The bartender told me the bathrooms are actually vented into the bar instead of outside ! That explains why the place smelled like doo-doo! Pros: The juke is pretty good Cons: few females women but a lot of bad smell more

Great vibe, killer jukebox, nice bar games 2/10/2007

Was here last night with a group of people and definitely plan on making this a regular spot. Very cool punk rock atmosphere with old photos on the walls and first-generation punk blaring through the jukebox at just the right volume (loud, but not so loud that you can't have a conversation). Decent beer selection with nice prices--several beers in the $3-5 range. The bartenders and most of the crowd was hip but friendly; definitely not an intimidating scene. And to top it all off, here's a bar feature that's tough to beat: free air hockey. Strange but true. Anyway, check out Manitoba's, you won't be disappointed. Pros: classy old school punk atmosphere, jukebox, games downstairs Cons: beer selection is only decent more

Always a Good Time 9/14/2006

The first time we went to Manitobas there was a bachelor party going on downstairs and there were three or four strippers running around half nekkid. I knew straight away that this was the place for us. Great music on the jukebox, a good crowd without the attitude, and enough hard liquor for the Chinese Army. Handsome Di ck was even kind enough to give me an autograph to send to a friend for his birthday and he took photos with us as well. That was 2 and a half years ago and we haven't been let down since. If you want foo-foo music and over priced drinks look elsewhere, if you want great music with strong drinks and a little bit of punk rock history then look up Handsome Dic k down in Alphabet City. You won't be disappointed. more

I love this place!! 12/31/2005

This is hands down the best bar in the world!! The drinks are great, service was phenomenal (the bartender had my drink ready before I even ordered, I swear!), and the jukebox kicks butt!!! Handsome Dick Manitoba could charm paint of the wall and the guy who bartends with him is amazing and funny too! I had the best time here and I'm definitely going back often... Pros: Jukebox, Bar Staff, Cheap Cons: none more

Great place for shots.. 12/5/2005

I enjoy this place most of the time with my girl, my buddy recently met his life partner here.... have to say this is an "underground love" bar. Kudos to the owner for having this place and managing to keep it from going under. There is also one really annoying bartender, that replaced a really great one. WTF? Anyhow, punk is still alive here. Pros: Cheap, historical patrons, location Cons: locals only, vibe, locals only more

The best bar in NYC 8/21/2005

Great atmosphere, great beers, pretty women, I had great time. more

i fell in love that night 6/20/2004

i went to manitoba for the first time in may with a friend. possibly my new favorite bar. we only stopped in for one drink, but i will MAKE time to go back to this place. we stayed only an hour or so, time enough to have a really great long island iced tea. the way the bartender made it, it was very smooth going down. was quite potent, but didnt taste the alcohol. the pictures on the wall of all the punk greats were amazing. being a bit of a buff of the late 70s ny punk scene it was a treat. and the jukebox, the best ive ever seen. never seen such a mix of music, from buddy holly to hte ramones to the shirelles. great mix. i highly recommend. Pros: great jukebox, good drinks, good crowd more

Kick Out the Jams 9/29/2002

There's still plenty of good bands in this town. you just gotta see em on mondays at manitoba's! tiny space was packed but i somehow still found a seat. certainly the most supportinve music scene i've seen in a while. it's all R-A-W-K as far as i can see, at least on this night. makes me wish i lived in the neighborhood, i'd be there all the time! Pros: Friendly folks, attentive barkeeps, cheap drinks Cons: small space more

  • The Scene
Punk rock is alive and well in this retro Alphabet City dive named for and run by Handsome Dick Manitoba, lead singer of the Dictators. This transporting venue boasts dark oak paneling, appropriately low lighting, and a fabulous collection of candid, vintage rock and roll photos: Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Iggy Pop, Sid Vicious, all legends, all Manitoba's contemporaries. The handpicked, kick-ass jukebox selection includes everything from KISS to the Clash. The Monday night party Garageland! features tight rock sets, attracting both old-school icons and newbie upstarts.

    The Draw
Cheap beer and shots, and little pretension make this a welcome alternative to the tired neighborhood lounges. It's loud, it's sweaty, it's anarchy in the U.S. dammit! If you hung out at CBGBs back in the day, don't be surprised if you run into some old buddies.
