NOT Good....at all. 8/21/2011

We had a terrible experience here. We started with dinner then drinks. Food was okay, but very overpriced! Then after dinner it went from ok to really bad... we were enjoying our drinks and in came 4 people with 3 dogs! Sat down next to us where we had just finished our dinner!!! Other people around us were still eating! Then the bartender started hugging on the dogs, and without a thought served drinks to customers. DISGUSTING!!! When advising the manager he stated, We are the in FL Keys that's how we do things!"" VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! more

Pricey and Inconsistent 3/18/2011

Having visited this restaurant five times over the past eight months, I can honestly say the service and food has been inconsistent. On my most recent visit yesterday, a friend and I came specifically for the $7 lunch special (which I had in September) only to be told they ""scrapped it a while ago."" As a new local I was very disappointed but decided to stay anyway because my friend (also a local) had never eaten there due to their pricey menu. The food portions were small (a skinny, flat fish sandwich for $10.99 and an upcharge for fries, yes fries) and a salad with sesame tuna in a soup size bowl (also 10.99) left us hungry and with a check for $28.00 for lunch (water and a Pepsi only)! The salad was small but good, the fish subpar and the prices not in line when all is said in done. Dinner two weeks ago for four totaled $160, with one of our party only ordering soup! Service this night was slow and one meal sent back for an ingredient asked to be left out but was not. It will not be returning. The owners should consider reinstituting the lunch special to attract new customers and locals, have an waitstaff training session, and clean up their act! more

New owners are missing the target. 10/12/2007

A very good local restaurant featuring an attractive menu with an old time Florida Keys decor. However, new ownership has allowed the operation to slip a bit. The menu remains varied, attractive and creative with many fresh local seafood selections and a nightly special or two but for no apparent reason the service at times can be slow to non-existant. Should that be the case on your visit, rather than wait until you're upset, seek out the manager and ask for a server. Food quality remains quite good but not quite up to previous standards. Still, Mama's is worth a visit. The sunday Eggs Benedict, Crab cake Benedict or Filet mignon Benedict are excellent. Dining inside is pleasant in the tropically painted atmosphere and the patio is quite nice most evenings but during mosquito or no-see-um season the patio can be uncomfortable and you may spend more time swating and scratching than enjoying your meal. The tiny bar off the patio is a favorite local hangout and serves a complete selection of cocktails. Seating at the bar is very limited but some table seating is available. Mangrove Mama's is certainly worth a visit and the new owners seem to be making a sincere attempt to maintain the reputation of quality food while working on the service issues. Pros: Old time tropical Florida Keys decor, very good menu, good food quality. Cons: Sometimes spotty service, parking can be a problem at peak times. more

Great food! 12/3/2003

There's an amazing chef in this kitchen. I had a seared scallop dish that was beautifully presented and wonderful. They also had the best conch sandwich (of the three places we hit). Their key lime pie is sublime. =) It's a perfect balance between sweet, tart and creamy. The key lime pie martini is also a must try. Pros: Great wait staff, Plenty of parking more

Amazing Key Lime Pie! 7/24/2002

We only stopped here to get out of the rain and have a cup of coffee. We arrived between lunch and dinner and could only get beverages and snacks in the smoky, local-filled bar. What we discovered was an absolutely amazing key lime pie. They don't sell whole pies to go, though. more
