WORST PLACE EVER!!! DON'T EVER GO HERE!!! 4/1/2009

I work in the area and happened to walk past the place and was curious and wanted to take a look. A woman (apparently the owner!) immedietly and literally kicked my friend and I out because we were only looking. If we wanted to ""look"" then you have to buy lunch is what we were told. We asked ""this is how you treat potential customers?"" and the witch kept screaming at us as we gladly walked out. Since passing on this story EVERY SINGLE PERSON I've spoken to who has ever been there says the same thing, it's dirty, the food is awful and watery and the service is a nightmare. If you like to be treated like a fool when you go to spend money, then this place should suit you just fine! Pros: If ""authentic"" is dirty, then this is the place for you! Cons: all employees RUDE to all customers more

Favorite place to eat in the world 2/24/2009

Authentic food in an environment you won't find anywhere else. Equal parts Italy and NYC. Anyone who has a problem with the staff obviously has no sense of humor. My highest recommendations. SB more

Great Italian Fare 2/5/2009

This place is amazing. I went in last week with a friend because she was hungry, now, I am not one to impress but everyone always looks to me when they are trying to find authentic New York places. This is the best italian sandwich meat you will ever encounter on the island. She concurred and you will too. Give it a try I never, ever had a bad one. more

MMMM, MMMM, Good 2/5/2009

If I could teleport myself from way uptown where I live on a daily basis I would. I can't so I will have to resort to going out of my way when I'm in & around the neighborhood. The breads are fresh and worth the trip. I got an Italian because... ya know, ""when in Rome..."" As I said, MMMMM, MMMM, Good. more

Amazing Sandwiches 2/5/2009

I went in yesterday to grab a famous sandwich and I was amazed at the rare Italian products this place has to offer. This is NYC finest. The staff was nice and made me feel like I was at home. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for rare olive oils, cheeses and amazing Italian sandwiches. Pros: Authentic Italian Food, Great Service more

Manganaros - HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT SUBJECT YOURSELF TO THIS PLACE!!! 1/30/2009

This place has HORRIBLE food and even WORSE customer service! The woman here actually CURSED at us because we decided not to buy bread there.. after we tried the food we paid, and decided not to buy extra (because it was BAD) she used more profanities than most people use in a year!!!! I later called up and asked her why she felt she could treat customers that way..I said she won't have many customers if she continues.. she said customers are sh*theads and they will be treated how she wants.. she said that I was ignorant.. followed by several more curses and hung up on me. DO NOT GO HERE if you do not want to be abused and subjected to terrible food. more

Dusty, crusty food/store/women 12/8/2008

I'm so glad that I stumbled on this place, else I would've never believed that such a misery-filled black hole existed in NYC. The store looks like a museum dedicated to old, nasty food. The women are paragons of crusted-witchiness, the Willy Wonka of spite and vitriol, driven to a life of ire from their own inadequacies. If you want the real nummy food, go next door to the Hero Boy shop and get anything involving the meatballs, which will be served with a smile on bread that is fresh. Pros: You get to meet 2 of the nastiest women ever bred Cons: A peek into history and hell more

all about the FOOD 10/27/2008

when i go out for lunch, i'm looking to eat some good food, not have a conversation with the restaurant owner. this place offers REAL food... unlike the prepackaged same-old sandwich places like Pax and Au Bon Pain. order it how you like it and it's fresh...and they use the best ingredients. smoked mozz..the best deli meats..and try the eggplant parm. please tell me where you can find a better eggplant parm in the city, i'd like to know. i feel like mom just made me lunch. and all the nonsense about the owners is juvenile.. they're there to cook. if you want service with a smile, go eat at McDonalds. Pros: fresh ingredients. real cooking. more

Stay Away! 7/23/2008

The woman who works in this dingy place is awful. The reviews here got it right, stay away at all costs and just go next door to Hero Boy where the ingredients are fresh, the prices are reasonable, and service is delightful. Otherwise, go next door to get yelled at, insulted, and fed questionable items. I don't know how they stay in business but I hope it's not for too long. Pros: Nothing Cons: Service more

Nasty Women, Nasty Looking Store, No Food, No Brightness, No Attractiveness - STAY AWAY 6/16/2008

My son and I recently visited this den of disgusting, dirty and vile women ""people"" entirely by accident and boy did we pay for our error! We were cursed at, told that they didn't have what was on their visibly posted menu and began to create a scene in their really empty ""restaurant"" - if you want to call it that. We walked out and went next door (to Hero Boy) where they have a bright clean atmosphere, have friendly people working in the restaurant, make the most delicious food, and welcome you in and say goodby when you leave. How these two (b)witches stay in business, selling obviously old moldy cookbooks and old disgusting products on their shelves only puzzles me. I have no sympathy for them and they deserve each other in their nastiness and vileness. I don't need abuse like that. One Star rating is one star too many for the likes of these despicable people. Pros: NOTHNG Cons: EVERYTHING more

VIntage Space, Vile Food, Nasty Servers 4/16/2008

Upon entering you think ""wow, an authentic old New York ethnic neighborhood place"" The problem is that the place has become a dark dirty tomb where a couple of nasty (schizoid) women treat customers (mostly tourists) with absolute contempt and charge high prices for vile, microwaved food beneath the quality of what you would expect from the local neighborhood pizza by the slice joint. Pros: vintage atmosphere Cons: awful food and nasty rude service more

Great bread, but very overpriced and dirty..... 4/7/2008

I liked the old school atmosphere and the people were nice, but it was not very clean and my $14 sandwich had wonderful bread, but very little meat and mozzarella. Pros: Italian Bread Cons: Overpriced more

Count your change! 1/11/2008

I ordered gnocchi with meat sauce to go. It was listed at $9.95. What I got was gnocchi (still not fully cooked) with marinara sauce and they charged me $11.95! What a rip-off of a place! more

Manganaro's Special 11/28/2007

6 Meats, 3 Cheeses, Great Bread. It's the only thing I order and I'm never disappointed. I haven't had a better sandwich anywhere. (I have never been over charged either) more

Mediocre overpriced food served by awful people 10/18/2007

This place is awful. Sure, it oozes old world charm, but what a price to pay. I'm an italian american, better yet, a human being, and am shocked how the people in this place act. The women serving the food charged me $60 dollars for 3 completely average sandwiches. To make matters worse, the attitude and rudeness of the people who ran this place was astounding. I couldn't believe how miserably they treated me and the people I came with. When I asked how much the sandwiched were each, they replied ""you do the math"". Though it sounds funny, that was only the begining. It was an awful way to spend a few minutes let alone my money... They figured since I looked like I had money, I could pay for it. Avoid this place at all costs. The disgusting people who run this place deserve their miserable existence. Walk in there if you dare, they'll share it with you. more

Disturbingly Rude 8/23/2007

The ""Hated It"" review got it right. The food is OK but the service is horrendous... its really quite weird, almost comical. The people who run this place are the rudest people I have ever encountered at a New York restaurant after living here 4 years... think ""Soup Natzi"" on steroids (and no laugh track). Do yourself a favor and pick up a tasty dish next door cause these people will ruin your appetite and make you regret coming. Pros: seinfeldesque experience in rudeness Cons: worst service ever more

Hated It 10/22/2006

I went here with friends while we were looking around for coffee and a snack during the late afternoon. Gosh, I wish I had known this place was full of tyranical people. I'm Italian--these people embarrassed me. The food was bland. The attitude was bad. No one needs to be treated like they are bothering these store owners by ordering food. Why do they have a store at all if they can't deal with customers??? Weird. Very Weird. Cons: EVERYTHING more

They make sandwiches - not conversation. 8/14/2006

Hey, lighten up everybody. If you're looking for a friend this isn't the place. If you want an unfussy, authentic Italian hero on incredibly good custy bread with a Pellegrino or cappucino and some nice Italian cookies for dessert, step into the past and this virtual museum of a deli. You won't be disappointed. more

Stay Away... 7/18/2006

The other review was dead on. Come here and you'll prob be yelled at. Don't be fooled by the sweet-looking man in the picture; his daughter (who works behind the counter) is OUT OF HER MIND! When she's not screaming obscenities at her father, sister or help, she's treating the customers like second-class citizens. Upon ordering a small caprese salad, she stated ""oh, well the price of mozzarella has gone up"". I continued with the order, only to be told that a handful of lettuce, roasted reds would be $7, and adding two miniscule slices of mozz would total $10. I had no choice but to walk right out. Manganaro's food is alright, but the service is nothing short of atrocious... Pros: Food Cons: Service, Service, Service more

pasta-nazi! 8/1/2005

if you like getting yelled at go here. i asked the woman at the counter a question regarding price and my food was constantly threatened to be taken away. ""why is this price different the what the menu states?"" was the question i asked. since i asked it i was no longer able to buy the food. after i said ""i was gonna buy it"" she gave me back the food. after i purchased i asked again and was told to give back the food so she could give me my money back. the food amount was small and it was bland and expensive. more
