Mediocre Food, Captivating Crew 6/1/2008

Not exactly your typical Asian restaurant, no buffet or hard to understand employees (except for the manager). The food was okay ,and worth going back for only if your already in th area. They are over-priced with $8 entrees, but the food is tasty. Make your dish "spicy". Don't waste your time on any of the soups, but definitely give the tofu a try- it's phenomenal. The shrimp entree is delicious and worth every penny, tossed in a sensational spicy mayo. Pretty clean, nice, quiet place to grab some food. Very friendly employees, a very diverse group to say the least. Last time I dropped by, I was served by a young, nice female sporting dreadlocks... not typical of restaurants, but nice to see some flavor in our world. Overall, a "must-try-at-least-once" restaurant. Pros: Employees Nice Cons: Pricing more

Having tried it twice, I have to say that I really don't understand the appeal of this restaurant. On my first visit, the "Thai coconut soup" was watery and sparsely stocked with chunks of chicken that tasted not like Thai curry, but ordinary curry powder. But even good restaurants can have some bad menu selections, so I gave them a second shot and tried the "Vietnamese crispy noodles," which were not remotely crispy---merely very hard to chew, as though half-cooked. That dish, like the soup, contained large planks of what appeared to be completely raw vegetables, and was drenched in a generic-tasting brown sauce much like you'd find in any cheapo mall food court Chinese food. But the dishes here aren't even particularly cheap: around $8 for the noodle bowl (which is enormous, at least). I've seen reviews raving about how great Mama Fu's is, but I just don't see it. They do the indie/hipster noodle-house atmosphere well, and the staff seemed friendly enough, but the food barely passes for mediocre. (Popular with college students, apparently... maybe you have to be in the right "frame of mind" to appreciate it.) Pros: Portions are large, ice cubes in my water were nice and cold Cons: The food, the prices (considering the food quality) more
