Outstanding, authentic Indian with service 7/21/2005

After reading up on Maharani and discussing Indian food w/ my friend, I now realize that this place isn't for everyone. It's only for people who actually care about what they ingest. The food is very fresh and the prices reflect that, no question. But I'm happy to pay the difference because you can taste it. We ordered the okra, the eggplant and the rack of lamb and they were all outstanding - and better than what I've had at comparable restaurants. We didn't sit in the Fantasy Room, but the room looked lovely and everyone there was very cordial. I'm looking forward to our next visit. CS users are right on the money about this place - it really is the best Indian in the City. Pros: service, food, atmosphere Cons: large portions more

As authentic as I've had in the States... 5/29/2005

My friends from England raved about this place because of its clean, contemporary decor and authentic food and they were right. I was told by the staff that their chef is a real lamb expert, so we went for the lamb chops and lamb saag and they were perfect. Parking in the neighborhood is tough to find on the weekends, with all the great bars around. But this is definitely the nicest spot in this neighborhood, especially if you're gonna stick around for the whole evening. Their Fantasy Room looks interesting, but we'll hit that up next time out. On the whole, Maharani really is the best Indian restaurant in SF. Pros: food, ambience, staff Cons: parking more

truly the empress! 5/26/2005

I was there last weekend with two of my friends who came down from San Diego....My friends actually picked the place...and me being a San Franciscan for only 3 years now hadn't discovered this little gem of a place hidden in the tendernob! We ordered some Rack of Lamb, eggplant...and some delicious butter chicken...the food was just fantastic. What was interesting about the place was their fresh mango lassi......by far the best I have ever had. My friend ended up having about 5 champagne cocktails....which were just these fun little champagnes drinks...really yummmy!! there was a really handsome waiter....who was not only courteous...but very prompt and remembered all our menu altering instructions....my whole experience was just great....it was really fun night!!! Pros: great service Cons: parking more

Quaint, whimsical place 5/9/2005

It's definitely a different Indian restaurant. Clean surroundings are a welcome change from the dives around the Bay - and they actually have great food. We had a simple dal w/ rack of lamb and chicken tikka masala...stellar stuff. Nice folks, good service, quality place. Pros: service, food, mango lassi Cons: wait time more

Underrated place 4/20/2005

I have to admit, it's a great restaurant. I was a regular at a few of the Indian dives, but now I can see the difference. Nice people, great food, truly electric atmosphere. They had live Indian violin when we were there and it certainly made an impression on my date. The Fantasy Room is the place to be. Pros: food, service, romantic Cons: crowd, parking more

Amazing!!!!!!!! 12/27/2004

Absolutely fabolous! From start to finish this was a great experience. This one of my first visits to an Indian restaurant in San Francisco at it was great. Since then I have been to several other places an they do not compare. I know the trend is to go small, disgusting Indian eateries (oily food) but I prefer to have a nice meal in very cool, chic environment. The staff is very cool and professional. They took the time to show their entire restaurant to me. The Fantasy Room is gorgeous but the Banquet Room is even better. Check this place out, you won't be disappointed. Great Food. Great Service. Great Environment. Pros: good chick. tikka mas, good tandoor food more
