Best

This place is like the best! I can come here every week and love it everytime. The food is simple, normal and great.

Worst

OK

went last night. great girls but horrible bouncer who thinks he works at a nightclub in nyc. overall good experience but relax at the door, its only a simple bar on upper east, no...

Rockin Website Too 6/4/2003

I enjoy hanging out at Mad River with friends, service is great, I like the overall atmosphere, lines can be long but i guess its worth waiting. I really like the website, real sporty. Most bar sites aren't any good but I tip my hat to the River for having an excellent website. If you haven't seen it check it out. more

I almost wet my pants.. 5/20/2003

Seriously, when i read that last review, im POSITIVE they are talking about the wrong place. Its the EXACT OPPOSITE! Drinks are cheap! Easy to get to the bar! Bartenders are hilarious AND attentive! Murphy the DJ is so MONEY that we used him for a private party! The dancing is fantastic and the crowd is just there to have a good time. Gotta love a place where you go up and order a shot and the bartender makes sure to do one with you! Seriously, go down there and check it out. Theres never a cover and is a guaranteed good time. -AJ Pros: awesome staff, prices, GREAT music more

obnoxious yuppies 4/8/2003

This place has attitude starting at the sidewalk. always a line to get in, overpriced drinks, crowded with shallow annoying people. If you want to pick up an investment banker, this is the place for you. This bar has no soul. Cons: yuppie, crowded, expensive more

AWESOME 3/26/2003

This place is fantastic great food, good times, really nice people. Really hard to find around NYC. I especially like that they have something to do every night of the week. Pros: great music, good looking people, high energy more

terrible 2/21/2003

$20 all u can drink means nothing if u can't get to the bar. This place suks. You can tell the owners don't care at all about their patrons, just pack em in, and take their money. Music too loud, bartenders hot, but horrendous. Don't waste your time. Pros: hot chicks Cons: crowded, loud, too many guys more

It's a bar! 12/27/2002

if you are looking for a quick, inexpensive bite in a bar atmosphere this is the place to go. The menu is typical bar food with prices that can't be beat. The noise level in the restaurant area is pleasantly low so talking is more than possible. Our server was late so the manager took care of us which was great - the service was not as good when our server showed up....great value - good food - Pros: Inexpensive, value, not noisy Cons: service more

Too Crowded 12/17/2002

This place was great until 11, then it filled with pretentious college grads, and all of a sudden you could not move! You definitely couldn't dance (and there were some fine ladies there) because everyone was so packed in. Going to the bathroom was a journey that ended in defeat, seeing as when I got to it, there was not much but toilet paper and water on the floor. If it was less crowded, probably would have been better. Pros: Atmosphere, College crowd Cons: Too many people, Kind of dirty, Stinky (people) more

Think it's got class? Uh, not really. 12/15/2002

Mad River: Trypical collegiate bar. Typical collegiate crowd, which is fine for a good, cheap and layed back time...but at 11pm, the bouncers come around asking you to take off your baseball cap...even us babes. To add injury to insult, said bouncers demand that you get up off your bum b/c they're taking your barstool away, saying, "Uh, duh, yeah...we become a um, 'classy' bar; after 11pm" Last I checked, 'classy' bars can have barstools and don't require guests to get up off their seats. The bouncers could have made it clear to everyone had they just explained that it was klass with a capital K that they were after. Stupid place, asinine rules. Don't ever go. Oh, and the bartenders got the drinks all wrong, almost every time. more

Always a Great Time... 10/21/2002

I don't think i've ever had a bad night at Mad River -- always fun and eventful. if you're looking for a fun night of dancing, this is a great bar to go to with a big group of friends. The crowd is great - young, good-looking and always looking for a good time!! more

The River Runs Rapid 8/16/2002

Mad River is dyno-mite. Great crowd if you are 21-35 looking to have a good time, relax, drink a few brews and dance with some hotties. Great place to be b/c the morons that start fights don't show up. The service is excellent, all the bartenders are quick and always are smiling. If you go look for the stud behind the bar, Aidan, he's the man. Hope to see you there sometime soon. -Kurtis Pros: Good times, Great people, Hot Chicks more

Fun till U Drop 7/28/2002

This place plays the music you all love to dance too. There is a great mix of hip-hop, pop and techno. The dance floor gets really crowded and you have to be willing to nudge annoying couples who think they need to take up half the dance floor with there swirls and crap. This place is fun. more

Mad -Ness 7/8/2002

This Place is Awesome. A must experience in NYC. Be warned..you will never experience anything like this place..it ROCKS every night of the week. Try Wednesday Night for example...300 people, dancing, drinking, going off. Take me to the River Pros: Shots, Dancing, Sports more

The Next Studio 54 6/20/2002

Sarah Gardner is the Andy Warhol of Mad River. Godspeed. more

Awesome!! 5/22/2002

I love this place!! I never go home unsatisfied. Jeremy is the best bartender I've ever seen. The way he perks those pecks when he pours just gets me hot!! And, with enough encouragement from the ladies, this hottie bartender will lose his shirt. I highly recommend it!! Lisa more

  • The Scene
Miss those college outings for comfort food, brews and a decent jukebox? Mad River will take you back, minus the tuition. Casually dressed folk of all ages chill in the spacious back dining area, while up front a lively happy-hour scene draws recent grads and sports fans. A second-floor party room, TVs galore and pleasant, low-key service make it great for that Super Bowl gathering or fraternity reunion.

    The Draw
It's more than just an after-work spot. Live bands appear on select weeknights; DJs and guest bartenders bring in large crowds on the weekends. For munchies, choose from bar starters such as nachos, and main courses of hamburgers, sandwiches and large salads. While the potato skins and thin-crust pizza are a tad bland and too cheesy, most dishes use surprisingly fresh ingredients; standouts include a peppery French onion soup with thick chunks of bread and beer-battered onion rings.
