My worst restaurant experience yet... 1/15/2009

This place is awful, and I will never return. My husband and I went to Lemon Leaf on Wednesday night (01/14/09) after reading the positive reviews here on CitySearch. The interior is cozy and cute. We seated ourselves after standing in the doorway for a bit. The waitress appeared as we were heading to a table for two next to the window. There was enough time for us to take in the appetizer page before she brought us waters. I managed to ask for a thai iced tea while she hurried away. She brought the tea and turned to speed-walk away again, so my husband spoke up and attempted to order appetizers - She cut him off mid-sentence with a raised hand and a terse, unintelligible utterance. When she returned with a pad to write on after delivering some food to a neighboring table, we ordered the calamari and potstickers for appetizers, and duck curry and mussamun curry for our main courses. The potstickers were good, but didn't seem ""fresh"" - I would guess they had been previously frozen. The calamari was undercooked, unappetizing and honestly, bizarre. It was coated in a mushy orange-colored breading that I suppose was meant to be crispy. However, we were still optimistic at this point and eagerly awaited our curries. The duck curry was the biggest disappointment: the ""duck,"" consisted of skin, bones, and cartilage that frankly tasted a bit off. The curry sauce itself was tasty; the sweetness and spice were just right. The vegetables were mediocre. The mussamun curry sauce was also quite good; however, the chicken meat was tough and the potatoes were mostly raw (as in, still cool and really crunchy). We also had problems with flies. Overall, the only edible items we were served were the potstickers, the rice and the thai iced tea. Although the meal was completely offensive, we decided not to complain - I don't think the waitress would have understood that we weren't angry at her, but rather, at the horrible chef(s). We paid and left a table full of uneaten food. Pros: Cute interior (minus the water-damaged floor), thai iced tea/potstickers (hard to mess those up)... Cons: Everything else. more

Not very good 1/15/2009

I'm sorry to rate this local restaurant poorly but it honestly was not very tasty and the ambience was sorely lacking. There were many flies buzzing around inside, and this was during the middle of winter. The food was brought really fast but it was of mediocre quality and freshness. I ordered the Pad Thai thinking sticking to something basic would be OK, and it was very disappointing. Pros: food comes fast Cons: food doesn't taste great and there are flies buzzing around more

One of Portland's Best 1/12/2009

I could on and on why we order from here but suffice to say the flavors are not overbearing yet present, super spicy without losing any subtly and the staff is nice and very helpful with questions about the menu. We drive quite a ways a couple times a month to pick up our order and never hesitate to pick up the phone with menu in hand the next time. more

Black sticky rice! 7/10/2008

If you haven't had black sticky rice, you won't know why I was so happy to find someone who has it in Portland. I've even put a whole order through Delivered Dish just so I could get the black sticky rice. Pros: really, black sticky rice! Friendly staff, good food Cons: on Powell more

Friendliest Thai place around 4/30/2008

I absolutely love this restraunt. I have been eating there for a few years now. The staff is Very friendly, always makes my order as requested and does it in a timely manner. I eat in sometimes and the atmosphere is great (indoors or outdoors), I also order to go and it is always just as great. I highly recommend this place for a romantic date , friendly get together( they have space in the back for bigger get togethers) or a family night out. Pros: Atmosphere, great staff, and coziness Cons: Lunch can be abit hectic during school days, The highschoolers across the street love this place!! more

Good food, good service, affordable prices 8/6/2007

My boyfriend and I have eaten here a handful of times and we've yet to be disappointed. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming and the servers are always friendly. Also the food is very reasonably priced and the portions are large. The food is not biblical by any means but it is very good, and any place that can feed two people dinner for under twenty five dollars is a place that gets my business. If you live in Southeast take advantage of this neighborhood asset, and if you don't, make the journey. Pros: food, service, price, atmosphere Cons: gravel parking lot more

Huge Disappointment 5/17/2007

I've ordered twice from this restaurant through Delivered Dish for business meetings. The first time the food was just ""OK"". It was edible but certainly was FAR from the best Thai food I'd ever had. I thought I'd give the place one more chance to make or break my opinion of them. Cons: They are unwilling to cater to their paying customers preferences more

If you want style and good food bring your date to lemon leaf 6/27/2006

great food and great thai staff. Pros: best thai food in portland. with thai music..sit inside or out Cons: ummmm its not free? more

Mussamen curry is excellent 4/12/2006

Try the mussamen curry, its some of the best in the city. Their salad rolls are not just rice noodles and a few bean sprouts, they have lots of fresh crunchy vegies. I would recommend them highly. Pros: friendly service, comfortable seating, good price Cons: on Powell Blvd. more

Friendly service and satisfying food 3/26/2006

You will not spend much to go away full from Lemon Leaf. The funky location may put you off, but the low prices and speedy service of decent food will bring you back again. more

Pad Kee Mow missing tofu and flavor 3/3/2006

My order was simple, Pad Kee Mow with tofu to go. I got my order quickly and the box was heavy, so I thought I had scored. I got to car and sampled the food; with the exception of the Thai sweet basil, I found it extremely bland, the noodles were a mess of everything solid glued blocks and tiny pieces of pasta (usually found at the bottom of the box/bag) and last but not least there was no tofu. I went back told them about the tofu but what can you say about the other two issues. Perhaps I'm just a picky eater, but I do know what I like and this is not it. As I waited for the fix I read the flowing reviews from three other diners. Look, with so many great Thai restaurants in Portland, why settle for ""hit and miss"" Pros: Willing to fix error Cons: Flavor, Presentation more

De-Licous 1/11/2006

My girlfriend and I visit here often. Its hardly ever crowded, is always amazingly delicious, inviting and friendly, ( and dare I say romantic ). Seriously the Paper Moon appetizer is highly, highly, highly, addictive. I could eat like twelve in a row. Their food is dead on accurate and scrumptious Thai cuisine that, contrary to popular belief, is highly needed in this town. Sure there are a lot of Thai restaurants in Portland, but trust me....We've found the best. I would reccomend going there before they get vastly popular and therefore ruined. Pros: Paper Moon App, pa nang, everything Cons: too delicious , too amazing, too perfect more

Great Ambiance & Service! 9/3/2005

This is a fairly new Portland restaurant it's only been open for about 4-5 months. I went there for the first time today and was delighted. The furnishings are chic and colorful, the food is tasty (with large portions), and the service was unbeatable. From just looking at the outside of the building, I would have not expected such a well-done place inside. The photo on this review doesn't do it justice. It's easy to pass by this restaurant because it's located on busy Powell, but you really must stop in! more
