People go to La Barca just because they are told that "people go to La Barca". We had the worst service there! We ordered our pitcher of margaritas while we waited in the overcrowded bar. The pitcher did not arrive until after we had been seated at the table and even then it was disgusting! The waiter was inattentive and rude... and how many times can "Happy Birthday" be sung over the period of one hour? Although the food was decent, you're much better off in the de-gentrified areas of the Mission where the family owned restaurants make strong drinks and authentic grub: minus the shrieking 21 year olds. Pros: nice sized portions, very roomy Cons: , ambience, drinks more

Loud and crazy 6/30/2003

I'm not sure if it is always this way, but this is the craziest restaurant I have been to in SF. Maybe it was the after baseball game crowd, or perhaps the Marina pub crawl, but folks her were D-R-U-N-K. The food is pretty average and the staff is way overstretched, although they tried hard and were apologetic. Not the kind of place to bring a first date or anyone you want to impress. If you plan on throwing a few back, eating large portions and dancing on tables, this place is for you. more

Drink, don't eat 1/3/2003

Great place for drinking beers and listening to live music on a weekend night. The restaurant portion is lacking serious food, and the waiters forget you are there. I ordered carne asada and got a 2"" thick chuck roast and I'm sure the chips were leftovers from the previous party and shoved back into the oven to warm them up. Pros: Live music, inexpensive Cons: Bad food, bad service more

Can you say bad service? 10/20/2002

The food was OK but the service was terrible. With several pitchers of margaritas, we ordered a separate drink for one person who doesn't like margaritas. To this the server said it would take too long because the bar is crazy right now. Then one of the entrees was missing and when it turned up half hour after everyone elses, it was completely cold. Even these things I understand somewhat because the restaurant and bar were pretty full and it's not the servers' fault that they may be understaffed. However, the worst part was even before we sat down. The greasy host was very rude to us. He must be the son of the restaurant owner or something because there is no other explanantion why he's still employed. Cons: worst service, bad parking, crowded more

Good time 7/7/2002

Great enchiladas (cheese with red sauce are the best) and great margaritas. Salsa is great but chips are a bit on the thick side. Expect the service to be slow, but that's typical for most places in SF anyway. Good place to go with a group -- you won't notice the service as much if you're busy gabbing. Pros: Inexpensive, Good Atmosphere, Young crowd Cons: Crowed, Noisy, Slow service more

Get a pitcher of sangria 6/26/2002

I'm usually not all that enthralled with sweet-tasting drinks, but the sangria here is outstanding -- and it nicely cuts the heat of your meal. Get a pitcher of sangria to share, but be careful -- it's tastes almost like fruit punch, but packs a whallop (a couple glasses and you're tipsy). Pros: Great sangria more
