Small Store Has So Much Potential 9/22/2005

Kowalski's, as a whole, is a great chain. They blow places like Cub & Rainbow out of the water, and are my favorite place to shop. The one on Grand is no exception. They have a great deli with really good sandwiches & soups, decent produce, fresh meat selection, good grains, etc. But the one on Grand is so small. The aisles are always cramped. And the layout isn't the best either. Don't even get me started on the parking. The lot is confusing, with one way driving, and there aren't that many spaces. But, if your only other options are Cub or Rainbow at Midway, make the effort to get over to Kowalskis. more

Kowalski's Market 9/20/2005

Kowalkski's Market is a great place to shop for quality produce and meats. Their selection is much better than Rainbow or Cub. I've been particularly impressed with the produce. The store is clean and has a friendly staff. The store on Grand is a bit on the small side, which can make getting around the store more difficult. There is ample parking for being on Grand Avenue. I'd recommend this as a good place to shop. The other Kowalski's would receive a higher rating because of square footage. more

Low ceilings, high prices, open late 8/19/2005

Kowalski’s seems to have everything you could ask for in a grocery store: good location, gourmet items, open late, but I’m routinely disappointed by this upscale grocer. Kowalski’s grand avenue location is ideal, but its prices are high and its selection is poor. The store doesn’t stock nearly as many items as Highland’s Lunds, and its prices are generally higher. The exterior and interior of the store reveal the truth about Kowalski’s. It is a suburban grocery store trapped in an urban setting. Like so many suburban homes, Kowalski’s is clad in facing brick and false architectural details. The interior looks like some 80s housewife’s dream kitchen. The store is always cold, and the checkout lane is baffling. There is no place to put your groceries if you didn’t use a cart. You are forced to hand your groceries to the clerk who more often than not is an incoherent teenager. more
