Koodoos - Upper East sushi 12/24/2006

When I first saw this place, I thought "what the heck is a koodoos?" Despite it's strange name, I ventured in for a meal a few days ago. The setup is a bit odd - the sushi bar is so high up that they have put round tables with two chairs next to it - so, one would feel they are sitting at a cocktail table, but it's the sushi bar. The other tables are all against the right-hand wall of the restaurant. It's like they tried to do a feng-shui look, but didn't quite get it right. There is some bamboo around, but the TV at the sushi bar is a bit of a miss since, if you're sitting across from it, you can't help but watch. Neither can the lone sushi chef who was working there on Thursday night. We told our waitress up front that we had a train to catch and had to eat quickly, and asked if they could accomodate our order. She said yes, but the sushi chef got so distracted we almost had to take our food to go. That being said, the sushi was pretty good. I often judge a sushi restaurant by the quality of its sea urchin, and this place has fresh, excellent-tasting sea urchin, tuna, salmon, avocado, and some original house rolls which are different from the ones I've seen at Wasabi Lobby and other nearby places. I do recommend this place, but don't go if you're in a hurry, and probably not the best place for a romantic meal. more
