I live in Foster City, so it's not my neighborhood store, but it is on the way home for me from downtown San Mateo. I stopped in here on Christmas Eve and it was not a madhouse scene that I'm sure the area Safeways and Albertsons were. The checkers were friendly. It has a non-Starbucks coffee kiosk and has a decent baked good section - I was tempted to take one of the packaged cakes home, though I didn't have occasion to. The prices are reasonable, in line with Trags as an independent and competitive with the chains. If you need more than the local convenience store offers and don't want to stand in long lines, Key Market is your kind of market.
