I have been going to Karma for many years and have always had a wonderful experience. The staff is warmly courteous and professional and their expertise is truly impressive. I find I am frequently complimented on my haircut and color by perfect strangers--not only in New Haven, but around Connecticut and in New York City. The compliments inevitably go something like this: "WOW! Your hair looks great! Terrific cut and I love the color (I have purple streaks)! Where do you get it done?" The first time this happened I thought the stranger was just being polite but it has happened so frequently over the years that I know the compliments are real. I ought to mention that I am no gorgeous young chick but a mature professional woman, so the intensity of the response is pretty surprising. Thanks, Karma! more

I am a busy professional who doesn't have much time but expect the best service. Karma is an oasis in my busy life...a 45 minute spa. Never once in the years I have been going to Karma have I had or heard of the experience of "Not Impressed". more

Nice staff, but I ended up with a burnt scalp, color bleeding, color stains on my face and ears and an overall horrible experience. I spent over $200, No money was offered as refund for this mess. I still had to go to another salon to fix it. more

cheryl saved my hair.i walked into karma recently with a disater,i had breakage,split ends,and about 5 different colors on my head. cheryl took her time to explain to me what needed to be done to get my hair back to normal,what each prcess was ,and how much it would cost. the outcome was unbeliveable!!!!! i never had so many compliments on my hair-EVER. this salon rocks,they all work together as a team, and the work that leaves this salon is amazing! cheryl is a star. the whole staff at karma is great more

I hardly ever get my hair cut at a salon, however I love going to Christie. She is energetic and patient, its a great experience. more

Christie is a stylist who takes pride in her work, truly cares about her clients, and provides services that are individualized. I look forward to every visit that I make to Karma Salon to see Christie...as do my two daughters, my mother, my aunt, and one of my good friends (who is a male). Christie is not a cookie cutter hairstylist and really takes the time to get to know her clients and their hair. She listens to client expectations, provides honest feedback, and collaboratively works with her clients to provide services, and if wanted by the client, products, that are appropriate for each individual client. I personally get haircuts and color treatments from Christie, while my daughters and a good friend get haircuts, and my mother and aunt get both haircuts and hi-lights...all of us visiting on a consistent basis. Every time that we make the trip from Middletown and Plainville, we leave the salon feeling that we have received the very best services from Christie. My daughters are biracial, Caucasian and African American, and her ability to work with hair of diverse textures is outstanding. Christie always takes her time, and never makes her clients feel like she is rushing in order to get to her next client. Christie's demeanor is professional, upbeat, trendy, and most of all genuine. Her appearance is appropriately trendy. Her haircutting, styling, chemical treatment, and make-up techniques are creative, up to date, concise, and detail oriented, all of which she polishes and enhances through consistent attendance to professional development classes and shows. I cannot imagine what I, or my family or friends, would do without her expertise!!!! Thank you for everything Christie, and I look forward to hearing from you soon! Rachel K. : ) more

I made the terrible spontaneous decision to have my hair highlighted at Taft Cosmetics Hair Salon. My hair was not highlighted (blonde) but dyed RED -- not once but twice!! -- and the next thing I knew the stylist grabbed me by the shoulders and started pleading that I wouldn't make a scene. I was terrified because this was my first experience dying my hair and the Game (Yale-Harvard) was in 2 days and I am a cheerleader. I remembered receiving a fabulous cut at Karma last year (if I didn't just have a bad day and spontaneously hang a right into Taft Hair Salon, I would have scheduled an appointment at Karma and avoided all of this mess) and I knew that if I could just get there I would be okay. I called Cheryl on the phone and she patiently listened to my story and even though she was booked full she said to come on over and she would try to help me. I was SO THANKFUL and RELIEVED :-) I walked over to Karma and was offered some chai tea and destressed while reading magazines on the comfy couches. Cheryl came over to check in on me and announced that she would be with me ASAP. I was SUPER LUCKY to have one of her client's call in to cancel because of an emergency and Cheryl swept me up off of the couch and got to work! I cannot tell you how LOVELY it is to have your hair in the hands of someone as KNOWLEDGEABLE, CHARMING, and UNDERSTANDING as Cheryl! What began as a frightful experience ended with a triumphant return to blonde hair and a couple hours of feeling pampered and special :-) Karma is the BEST. You will LOVE it. The people are fabulous, the atmosphere is chic, and the overall vibe of the salon is friendly and cool -- getting your hair done is a downright fun and cathartic experience! THANK YOU CHERYL! Go see Christie! She cut and colored my hair today and it came out perfect. She is a master colorist -- she really listens and she is great at mixing and choosing the perfect color combination. The cut was great, too. She has a wonderful personality and is just a joy to see for your hair needs. Karma was great all around. Everyone was very friendly and they are quite attentive. Highly recommended! more

I've been seeing Cheryl for years to get my hair cut and highlighted and it always looks great. I visit the salon every 8 weeks and receive compliments all the way through from week 1 to week 8. The atmosphere, the beverages, the head massage, the products and the outstanding customer service. It is all there. No wonder Karma was ranked 3rd in the Advocate reader's poll. more

I've been going to Karma for a year, and I absolutely love it! Christie is my stylist so I must recommend her, although I've witnessed each of the Karma staff giving excellent cuts to a variety of age groups. I get my hair highlighted and cut. Christie does an amazing job, making suggestions yet listening to what I want (don't you hate those stylists who just do what they want to your hair and ignore you completely?! You won't find that here). She's also fun, friendly, and makes every visit a chance to pass some time in a cool, welcoming environment. Karma offers excellent service (including wine), and my hair has never looked better. I get compliments on my hair from total strangers! NYC-quality cuts for half the price. Highly recommended. more

I walked in to Karma by chance in May with a mess of hair. Jamie did a great job. At first, I was a bit surprised by how short it was, but the precision of the cut was astonishing. Over three months later [not too good for business I know], it still falls well and looks as good as some of the cuts I've had in the past. Now I just have to remember to make an appointment--and drive the 45 minutes into New Haven. Sticker shock aside, this was money well spent. more

I dont normally go to salons to get my hair cut. I read a few reviews and with some prodding from my girl friend I decided to give it a shot. With a nice glass of wine in me (Thank you Cheryl) it eased the fact I was getting my hair cut in a salon. My appointment was with Christie. I left most of the decision making up to her. She gave me highlights and lowlights and cut my hair. When I was finished my hair looked absolutely amazing! I looked like I walked out of GQ! Thank you Christie, 2 weeks later and it still looks great! See you soon! more

I was not very impressed with my experience with Karma. The service is wonderful but the overall outcome of my hair was not that great for the price. I thought they were on the pricey side. I saw other stylists doing great hair and color but my color didn't come out as nice. I thought for the amount of money I was paying I would have an amazing color but I didn't. They do offer you a complimentary drink and have a great 7 day policy. If your not happy with your hair you can go back within 7 days with no additional charge. I took advantage of it but it didn't help me out much. more

Go see CHRISTIE! I am very picky with my hair stylists, she came highly recommended. My color was beautiful, my cut was probably one of the best cuts i've ever received. She seemed so up with new styles and techniques. I am so happy with my hair and i've gotten so many compliments! The salon has such a cool vibe and I definitely will be back more

The salon is cutting edge. Go see Griffin. Get a great cut (and beautiful color) from a very talented, very personable stylist who loves what she does and does it very well. Excellent service and product (Ask about the parking lot around the corner that comps 1 hour of free parking for the salon!) more

If you want someone to chop your hair, go somewhere else. Karma is New Haven's answer to New York stylists at a fraction of the price. If you are used to going to your local barber or supercuts, you may want to look here. It's truly an experience rather than just a haircut or style appointment you'd get elsewhere. You will initially be greeted by one of the many talented staff to a complimentary beverage. Generally, you'll get a light head massage before each treatment to get your hair stimulated. If you're looking for a terrific style and experience, this is it! It's not just a haircut, but a hair experience! more

I used to go to whatever hairdresser would take me on the day I was ready to cut my hair. Then I started noticing that everyone in my office had *really* great hair...lo and behold, they were all using the same new salon: Karma. I decided to give them a try. I walked in, and they offered me my choice of a chai or glass of wine. My hairstylist started off with a 15 minute head massage. He then spent 2 hours making a masterpiece out of my hair...and true to his word, it never needed "product" or fancy styling to look great. As evidence of their skill at Karma, I submit: the mark of a great haircut is how long it looks good. I grew my short hair out for a year and a half before my wedding. It kept fabulous shape the entire time. People kept complimenting me on the style...a full year after it was cut! The atmosphere is great, and you'll leave feeling like a superstar. All of their stylists are exceptionally talented - you'll be in good hands with anyone there...but I have to put a shout out to my own guy, Gabriel. (Men - Karma can cut your hair too. Free cleanups make it cost efficient. Stop going to supercuts!) more
