Great Neighborhood spot 10/20/2011

I've never tried this place before, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It was much more spacious than I had imagined, and the food was great! They had all the standards, chicken teriyaki, tempura and the like... but they also had this new ""Palate Teaser"" section which had some interesting items. Bella Tempura, Garlic miso scallops, and Sapporo Beer Battered Miso Fish and Chips! I had to try the fish and chips... and it was really good. Big portion too! Staff is friendly and casual, not pretentious at all like some of the other places. Just a really relaxed and clean atmosphere. I can't wait to come back again to try some of the other specials. more

Amidst Sacramento's lively sushi scene this is basic at best 3/30/2011

Purchased a Groupon coupon and tried this place for the first time. I'm an avid sushi fan and was looking forward to delivering a good rating and hopeful the location would not be indicative of the overall experience. Sadly, this was not the case. It was 6pm on Wednesday, and I chose to sit at sushi bar because generally this is where the action is in most sushi restaurants. Here, there was nothing special. In fact, this is the ONLY sushi restaurant I've ever been to where they do NOT offer a complimentary cup of miso soup, cucumbers, edamame, etc. at the sushi bar. There were two chefs behind the counter. One gentleman was speechless and basically grunted when I made casual comment about the menu being ""interesting"". The other, Daniel, took my order. For drink. I requested cold, unfiltered Sake - this was promptly delivered, unshaken, and without a sake glass. Daniel then retrieved a clear shot glass from the bar for me to use. I thought the combination odd. On another note, other customers drinking hot sake were provided sake cups. For an appetizer I recommend the Garlic Scallops. Tho small to medium sized, slightly cold on the inside, the garlic sauce was pretty good. For dinner, I do not recommend the ""garlic"" crusted soft-shell crab and spicy tuna mix roll (Jiu-Jitsu). The majority of sushi restaurants in Sacramento serve soft shell crab w/two large end pieces which contain fried legs that are generally so large one must wrestle the affair with hands as opposed to chop sticks. Here, there was no such thing. Additionally, crab was soggy, the garlic was a nice touch but over all the roll was quite disappointing. Sauce was very standard affair, and tuna was slightly spicy. As for the service - if it weren't for Daniel, I would've given Kamon one star. Daniel made every attempt to be helpful, but the overall energy of the place was dreary at best. It seemed all the ""fun"", lively ambiance and subtle options available at so many other sushi restaurants were missing here. Low-salt soy, not on the bar. No wet towels to clean before and after were available or offered. Absolutely no attempt to provide anything but the basics were offered. No request for dessert; no floor waitress to deliver drinks or pick up menu after ordering, only the reaching of Daniel across the bar to deliver the goods. Music was nearly non-existent - I vaguely heard random jazz, barely audible. In fact, customer conversation from across the room was more noticeable than music. Restaurant was not busy, and they were not talking loudly. For those planning to eat here, I recommend doing so with a large, fun crowd. Bring your own enthusiasm and definitely avoid the sushi bar. more

Relaxed Atmosphere, Good Sushi 4/5/2007

Kamon is one of my favorite places to get sushi in Sacramento. I am a vegetarian so I cannot vouch for their fish, but they have a sizeable amount of vegetarian dishes on the menu (something that a lot of places in Sacramento cannot claim). I like their tempura, it is not as greasy and heavy as a lot of places, and their sushi rolls are good too. Other than that, the atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is friendly. I would definately recommend it. Pros: Ambiance, Sushi more

Best Sushi EVER 12/15/2006

you would never know it from the outside but Kamon is home to the best sushi i have ever had. i highly recommend the $20 roll (which would cost closer to $40 at some other places in sac). the service is amazing and if you sit at the bar you will get a view of sushi masters at work. stan is a true artist. if you like good sushi not drenched in too much sauce, kamon is the place to go. Pros: sushi, sake, stan Cons: parking more

Nice atmosphere........avoid the sushi 7/16/2006

Rule of Thumb, I always allow restaurants another try. On this occassion, I am going to break my own rule. I cannot give a complete review of the restaurant but only for the dishes I have tried. The sushi was horrible! All sushi was served at room temperature, the graining of the fish was low quality, and visually the fish was not sushi grade. Although my partner tried the teriyaki chicken and said it was wonderful, I can only warn other diners to avoid the sushi. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Sushi grade fish not being used more

Still great after all these years! 11/2/2005

Kamon is still continuing to evolve as the neverending expansion continues! Kamon now features a full alcohol bar and separate lounge. The food continues to be a hit with no noticeable decline in quality since opening. Waitstaff is consistently prompt and attentive. The management is friendly and responsive. Pros: Inexpensive, Great Sushi, Friendly Staff more

I have to say that the food and rolls are excellent. Check out the specialty menu it has great items like the Firecracker and Finding Nemo. Their Rocky and Godzilla rolls seem to be the favorites, combo bento boxes are a deal but be prepared to ask for a togo box! Kamon is a hidden gem compared to Mikuni or Nishiki. However when it's busy, it's BUSY. Don't take it out on the waitstaff...I've noticed they do it all...there are no food runners or bussers so give your server a break. The sushi bar also signifigantly slows when it's crowded expect a wait for rolls, specials, nigiri, and sashimi. They have put in a full bar that's attatched to the restaurant. Last time I was in I saw they put together a house specialty drink list with some fruity drinks that looked good. more

Evolution of the roll 2/10/2003

I have watched this resturant evolve over the years and the food keeps getting better...if that was even possible. Oh, and the editorial review was correct, the decor has changed, but the atmosphere has remained the same, welcoming and inviting to sushi pros and those that are dragged to the Japanese resturaunts kicking and screaming. Trust me, a few years ago I was that person and now I eat there at least once a month! Pros: never crowded, patient staff/explain Cons: a bit drafty more
