Best

This great sushi place in downtown Culver City has great specials. We have been there many times and always bring our friends. Pros: fresh food

Worst

WeI went on a date there on 11/10/06, at around 7p.m.. We ordered the food. The waitress took our order. The two of of the ordered dishes arrived promptly. Yet the two others have...

Very good sushi 6/29/2009

I needed my fix of sushi today, and my favorite sushi joint (kiriko on Sawtelle and Olympic) is closed on mondays. So, I thought I's give K-Zo a try, since it's the closest sushi place to my work. I wasn't expecting much more than a ""quick lunch""-quality sushi, and I have to admit that I'm kind of a snob when it comes to raw fish. Well, I have to admit that I was positively surprisedat K-Zo. I sat at the bar, where I asked the chef what was his recommendations were for today, and from that point on, he sensed that he couldn't get away with the basic rolls and salmon, so he took me on a mini oma-kase trip, feeding me with a very wide range of his best fish cuts... Some of them which I had never tried before, like sardine or that special kind of yellowtail which I can't remember the name. He also offered to give me one piece of each (where sushi usually comes in pairs), so I could taste as much as possible. My lunch went up to 55$ with sake and tip, which I must admit is a lot for just lunch, but it was a bargain for the quality, quantity (around 10 pcs, including Toro), and variety of the fish I ate, especially when you consider how pricy very good sushi can be. NB, you could get away with a much lower check and still get your fill if you stick to the mainstream fare, which also looks very high quality. I will definitely go back. Soon.... maybe tomorrow. I'm hooked. Pros: delicious fish (best ones are not always on the menu) Cons: nothing so far more

My Favorite Japanese Restaurant 1/20/2009

I Love this place! I go to K-ZO for my japanese food and GYENARI for my Korean BBQ Food. more

Best Sushi in LA or OC 1/19/2009

I live in south OC and drive up almost every weekend just to see Keizo and eat the best sushi ever! My boyfriend's sis is one of their favorite customers and eats there 3-4 times a week. Advice: Let Keizo pick what you eat. We never order for ourselves and always love what he provides. The price is high, but definitely worth even the drive! No sushi even compares. Pros: Everything, service, food, cleanliness Cons: Absolutely nada more

Octopus rocks 4/30/2008

With all the new restaurants budding in Culver City, it is nice to have a great japanese sushi restaurant. Kzo had a rocky start, but it is doing better than ever. The octopus dish is unbelievable. If you didn't like it the first time, give it another try... Pros: octopus dish, sushi bar more

Not bad, Not Great 4/16/2008

I am not sure how this place got voted the ""Best Sticky Rice"" over others. It was good, but nowhere near as good as Katsuya or Koi. I ordered a few things off the menu - less than impressed with each. The black Cod was extremely fishy tasting which usually is not the case. The scallops were less than par and did not come as described on the menu. All in all, I left hungry. more

A well-rounded Japanese restaurant 3/31/2008

I was happy/satisfied with every aspect of this restaurant. Highlights of my visit: more

A Sushi Mecca 2/27/2008

A coworker of mine told me about K-Zo about a year and I still had not been. We decided to make an office/girls' night out of it and all my expectations were more than surpassed. We were seated immediately (without reservations - it was a Wednesday evening) by a very friendly hostess and our waiter arrived promptly with water and took drink orders (I definitely recommend the ""Brass Fields"" white wine). We let a co-worker who was familiar with the menu do the ordering and each dish was better than the last. They are known for their Spicy Tuna Crispy dish which combines crunchy warm rice with soft chilled spicy tuna in a way that is completely unexpected and delicious. Another item that we tried was the Spicy Jalape?o Shrimp Handroll which we ordered in soy paper rather than seaweed. It was incredible and definitely left me wanting more! Of the sushi, my favorites were the albacore, halibut, and the yellowtail, all of which were sliced generously and were artfully presented on a long serving plank. This is a perfect restaurant for sushi lovers and haters alike because of the extensive, non-sushi menu. more

Too expensive for what was given 2/2/2008

So my friends and I decided to go here on a Saturday night. We made a reservation beforehand. They seat us right away and the staff was friendly. However the items on the menu were quite expensive. None of us wanted to order the pre-fixe dinner so we have to choose from their small bites item, sushi and rolls. I had two of the rolls, and they were okay, nothing spectacular. The small bites were quite small and pricey for what they were. So not worth it. Pros: nothing Cons: pricey for such little food more

beautiful place 1/8/2008

fantastic chef owner Pros: chef, cuisine, experience more

Best new Sushi Bar and Restaurant 1/4/2008

We have been to K-Zo 9 times and are always eager to return. K-Zo, his wife, and the rest of the staff are very friendly and accommodating. The portions of sushi are large and very fresh, with lots of innovative ideas without going over the top. I am not fond of designer sushi, but do love the spicy tuna on crispy rice, and the ""baby"" fresh fish of the day. I especially like the fact that you can make a reservation for the sushi bar and your favorite sushi chef. There is an extensive sake selection and shochu (sp) as well. This is definitely a keeper restaurant, and a jewel for Culver City! Pros: Friendly staff, fresh food, large sake selection more

Matsuhisa and Sushi Nobu should be ashamed! 11/16/2007

My girlfriend and I have been on a mission since we started dating to find LA's best sushi, and I think we finally found it. We've been to K-ZO four times, and it's been consistently spectacular every time. If you're a little adventurous, try the raw octopus. It is THE BEST SUSHI I'VE EVER HAD!!! Don't go for the rolls (which are good, but a tragic waste of awesome fish). more

Nice decor and that's about it. 11/3/2007

Expensive, loud, tiny portions. I can put up with all of that if the food was any good. But it wasn't. Nothing we ordered in our party of 6 wowed me. I'd rather take that amount of money and go to sushi zo. Pros: Nice decor Cons: Loud, expensive, tiny portions, and average food more

Fresh sushi and friendly service! 10/1/2007

I flat out love this place and make it a point to give my friends gift certificates here whenever possible. The one downside is that Culver City isn't the easiest place to get to if you don't already live in the area. The restaurant is somewhat small so not ideal for large parties (though they have one table which can fit a large party), but for 2-4 people, it's a great place to get creative dishes, fresh fish and nice service. I almost always get the pre-set menu because it allows the chef to give us his best. You get a lot of food for the money too. What I like best is that the owner and the staff are very nice and always friendly. Definitely highly recommended. more

Great meal, nice server 7/22/2007

One of my favs, server are nice and food is a must, brought my wine there and they allowed me to drink it, they were adorable with us. Plates were not very clean but they change it right away. We always had a great meal there. Highly recommended Pros: Sushi, server more

Definately Worth Going ! 6/18/2007

We've been there twice with differant people and everyone loved it both times. We've eaten sushi all over southern cal. and this place is one of our faves. We're going again tonight. more

Exquisite 5/18/2007

An amazing sushi restaurant but so much more. The prix fixe dinners are amazing. Pros: Fish, innovative preparation, ambience, service Cons: Can't eat there often enough more

Best Sushi in L.A. 4/3/2007

Without a doubt the best sushi in Los Angeles. Order from the chefs special menu - you're guaranteed the freshest, finest creations made from Keizo himself. This is Japanese cuisine at its best: creative, progressive & traditional at the same time, efficient, friendly - exactly what you'd find in Japan. Keizo comes from Roku, and thankfully left the Roku ""scene"" back on 3rd Street. Unparalleled!!!! Pros: Food, atmosphere, Keizo, staff Cons: nothing more

large sashimi servings 3/30/2007

the place is nice and fairly popular so it is best to make reservations. i tried the albacore, yellowtail and salmon sashimi. they came with 4 pieces each but they are huge servings. i thought they tasted fresh and buttery. yum! i also tried the monk fish liver sushi, which i thought was just ok (echigo's is better). i tried the white shrimp and i was not impressed (sushi zo's is better). i tried the blue crab hand roll and i definitely was not impressed - echigo's and sasabune's are better. i would probably still come back because the sashimi is pretty good and come in big sized servings. plus, the service is pretty friendly and quick. the price is not cheap but not that expensive. they also have other items on the menu, i.e., they more than just sushi, sashimi and rolls. more
