The Scene
Created as a haven for performers otherwise vulnerable to an exploitative club scene, this nonprofit dive is run by a network of volunteers and maintained by donations. It's also fur friendly--well-behaved pets are welcome--and high tech. Six Web cams broadcast live performances to an ever-growing worldwide audience. This cozy performance space is a veritable hodgepodge that can only be fully understood when experienced. Don't expect a doorman, a cover charge, or servers hawking drinks here. At the Shed, it's all about the music.

The Draw
Free-thinking music lovers and their furry friends flock to this homey nook to support independent artists. Largely unknown but invariably gifted artists perform everything from folk to jazz to rock, often encouraging the audience to join in the fun. Amidst the colorful mishmash of quilts, sound equipment, bookshelves, stuffed animals and activist newspaper clippings, snag a spot on the comfy sofa bed and absorb the whole wacky experiment.
