Editorial review from Citysearch 9/12/2014

I have been an avid lake goer for years. After reading some of the reviews here it is a little commical what some people write And what some expect for the money. I am familiar with Just for Fun and boating both. On their behalf(Just For Fun), boats, wave runners, and the insurance are very expensive. Unfortunately, the lack of experience(sometimes), common sense (frequently), and alcohol consumed on the lake during lake/boating activities causes the operation of this type seasonal business to be more expensive than some would like to think. Face it, if you want to play on the lake, it's going to cost some money. \r You/they. Cannot teach you everything in a 10 minute speech before you leave the dock. I read a couple of reviews about being charged for damaged props. It does not take much to damage an aluminum prop in a rock bottom lake. I have seen them ask customers to go with the dock instructor to the back of the boat and inspect the prop before you leave the dock so everyone can verify the status of the prop before hand. If you rent from anyone do it. If it's a holiday weekend and you have not scheduled/reserved in advance, don't expect there to be a boat and know it's going to be incredibly busy. There is not always available staff that are knowledgeable about boating and renting that you can call in and get just for a day or weekend. \r This is by no means a raving endorsement for them. Just a little common sense approach to use for those who have common sense to use it.\r As far as party barges, they are frequently abused by previous patrons and are not show rooms. If you are looking for a more plush lake boating trip for a group, consider the more expensive house boat rentals instead. As far as tipping, it's never required at any establishment. Is it customary to tip the driver/captain, yes. Most patrons with boating experience know to do it. If you go deep sea fishing, bay fishing, cruise boats, etc. it is customary to tip. How much is up to you if you had an enjoyable trip, tip accordingly. If you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't be going out to eat or participating in a service industry adventure etc.\r They could definitely stand to improve their bathroom facilities on board, but they seem to be par with a number of public bathrooms with a high volume of use and limited cleaning capabilities out on the water. \r Bottom line be prepared, ask a lot of questions so you are prepared and plan accordingly. We always have a good time and usually rent for a family afternoon trip once a year. I always tell people the boat leaves the dock an hour before it actually does so we don't waste time waiting for stragglers to get there because they do NOT delay the trips. Your paid time is your paid time whether u spend it at the dock waiting, or use it enjoying the lake. We bring our own ski boat to tie to the barge with our own bumpers and ropes so it doesn't get beat to death against their steel frames from the other boaters boat wakes or sometimes nut jobs who have more money than sense and drive their yachts at half speed throwing excessive boat wakes damaging docks and boats along their paths. \r Hope this review is worth your time to read it and my time to write it. Good Luck. more

Terrible service and a complete ripoff 9/21/2010

I had the same experience as several other recent reviewers. JFF tried to charge me $108.00 for a supposedly 'damaged' prop. The owner told me if it was his personal boat, he would just fix the prop but since I supposedly damaged the prop, he had to replace it. The guy is rude, obnoxious and a crook. Don't do business with these people more

Horrible phone service and rude personel 9/5/2010

I have been on many party barges at JFF and had a great experiences and loved the boat captains! more

Save your time & money...Go somewhere else! 5/12/2010

They charged us for a "damaged" propeller and made us buy a replacement. When we asked them if we could keep the old propeller, since it was no longer any good, they said no, that they were going to fix it. Pros: none Cons: expensive, unnecessary fees, rude staff more

Great Boat Rental 3/22/2010

The staff here is great! We rented a boat last friday and Wow! what a good time. We reserved a boat online through their website (easy). When we arrived we had to do some paperwork and then they took us to our boat. They went through some rules and showed us how everything worked...this was a little boring, but paid off as we saw some people getting tickets for not following the laws. The guy that showed us everything was polite and really seemed to know a lot about boats. The boat ran great and we rented a tube as well which was totally fun. We came back a little early because everyone was tired and Just for Fun even gave us a credit to use the 20 minutes that we were early for the next time. We will definitely be back! Pros: Reasonable, Good Boats, Great Staff, Fun Cons: Sunburn more

Best experience on Lake Travis 2/27/2010

After renting boats on Lake Travis for several years, I found Just for Fun near Carlos and Charlies restaurant. The boat was clean and new. The employees were all friendly and helpful and seemed to really want us to have fun. These guys know so much about the lake and boating that I would recommend them to anyone. Pros: Professional, friendly and a great value Cons: None more

Never again! 5/16/2009

We rented a 24' pontoon boat and a wave runner today at Just for fun. Before we got on the boat, we were concerned when we saw it started raining. We asked if we could wait till the rain stopped or come back on another day (we've already paid), and the staff told us we could not change our time since there were other customers lined up after us for our boat. We could not get a refund either. They would only give us a store credit to use on another day. The staff assured us the rain would pass in a few minutes and it would be just fine for us to go out. So when the rain lightened up a bit we got on the boat and went out. Pros: On the lake Cons: Horrible service more

EXTREMELY poor service, bad boat conditions 8/23/2007

I've used Just 4 Fun for years, but lately they've apparently decided that less is more and don't care anymore about what kind of product they put out. I've used them at least once a year over the last 3 years. I used to use them more frequently than that way back in the 90s. On this last trip we rented one of the party barges. They are supposed to supply an ice chest, grill, and driver. One key word missing in front of all three is "working." The ice chest was broken. The grill was absolutely filthy, as if no one had cleaned it in 5 years. I asked the driver for a light for the grill. He said "Duh, it has one of those ignition switches on it." It was broken. Luckily he had a lighter. (I had asked for no smoking onboard, but the driver smoked anyway.)
Pros: It's on the lake Cons: Service, conditions of equipment, service, staff, service more

Fun Times 7/26/2006

I've done several party cruises on Lake Travis through Just for Fun and have always had a great experience doing business with them. The staff is friendly, helpful, and fair. Anytime, I've been charged extra for anything was my or my party's fault. They have a great service and I will definitely go through them again! more

Great Experience 7/25/2006

I'm writing to tell you what a wonderful experience we had. My family rented three of your pontoon boats for the day. We had a delightful tour of Lake Travis. I will definitely do it again! Your people at Just for Fun could not have been better! more

Most ridiculous policies ever. 7/11/2006

As if the 65 dollar/hour rental fee for a jetski isn't high enough. my friends and i took out a jet ski around 7pm. another customer had just brought in the jetski, they just filled it up and gave it to us. when we get back at 8, they say that we damaged the jet ski, a break about 3 inches long, they don't even entertain the thought that the damage could have already been there before. not only that but they charge us 400 DOLLARS for a 3 inch break. ridiculous! when you look at the other jetskies, they all have similar breaks that are just filled in with chaulk. They just decided since it was the end of the day, to take advantage of some people and rip them off. Stay away from these ridiculous business people. Cons: worst service of all time more

more fun than a barrel of monkeys 3/24/2006

Although I've lived in Austin for a while, it took some out of town visitors to get me to the lake. My family came in from up north and we got a twelve person pontoon for the afternoon. Even though I had never driven a boat before the staff there explained everything really well and I felt real confident when we left the dock - it was easy! My grandma had made everybody sandwiches and we spent four hours just cruising the lake and seeing all the cool houses, the landscape and the damn. My nephew had fun running around the spacious boat and checking out the ducks and turtles. We didn't get in the water as it was still a bit chilly, but we had a great time anyway and I will definitely be back when it is warmer! Pros: easy! more

Best Day Ever 1/25/2006

We had just moved to Austin and my family wanted to see Lake Travis from the water. I had sold my boat before we moved and decided to rent a boat for the first time. We rented a new Sea Ray from Just For Fun and had a fantastic day on the lake. After moving down from the Great Lakes, who would have thought boating would be that much fun in January? My daughter said it was her "best day ever". Also, after owning several boats, I was surprised that a rental boat would be in such great condition, and their friendly staff really made us feel special. If you go, ask Veronica about her mural of Lake Travis on the wall in their office. She was painting it the day we visited. Pros: Friendly staff, Great family outing, Free gas more
