Nice facilities but expensive and management is unfriendly. 12/7/2009

The first time I went to J.R. to use their range, I was taken by surprise when an employee came into the range and said my time was up when I had hardly even started. They were charging about $19 per hour at the time which, in my opinion, was outrageous. For that money you would think they would turn the ventilation system on but they didn't. The air was hot, stagnant and smoky. It was so hot, in fact, that I was dripping with sweat. Apparently they don't turn it on if only one shooter is using the range. I contacted the owner and told him that I thought $19 per hour was way out of line and he would generate more business for the range as well as bring more customers into the store if they lowered the range fee. He got very defensive - almost to the point of being downright nasty and complained about how much his air filters cost. I pointed out that if he didn't want to use his filters, he might as well shut down the range and that if he was using lots of filters it meant his range was generating a lot of business. Some months later, however, he did lower the price to $19 for unlimited range time. I have used the range since but I have never found it to be a positive experience. For one thing, the guy who checked me in treated me like a criminal! I don't look like a criminal, talk like a criminal, or act like a criminal. I'm an educated 60 year-old retired engineer. He asked if I had any foreign made ammunition (I didn't) and said that it wasn't allowed at the range. They probably don't want mild steel casings like that used for Wolf ammo mixed in with the brass and I could understand that but he denied that that was the reason. He said that the ""hard"" bullets used by foreign manufacturers damaged their range. Strangely, ammunition that you loaded yourself was fine no matter what components you used. He then insisted on going through my ammo box and he opened every single box to see that I hadn't put any foreign made ammunition in any of the boxes. he also checked my range bag and even looked me over, obviously to check if I was trying to sneak something into the range. Where I come from, a man is taken at his word unless there is a reason that he shouldn't be. The experience was insulting. I almost expected him to strip search me! Pros: Very nice range and store. Cons: Expensive, customers often treated rudely. more
