Very tasty 6/28/2010

The food here was very good and my finicky Mexican dining companion was impressed. We shared numerous items, both of us more interested in the appetizers and dessert than full entrees. As recommended, the goat cheese ravioli was excellent. We both felt the prices were a smidge high, however, considering the cramped, nothing-fancy atmosphere. (A tamale should not be $6, for example.) Still, the place has a certain charm, the food looked and tasted great, and we would both go back. more

As a Mexican i give it an A+ 5/24/2010

I love every dish i have tried in in place. If you are looking for authentic mexican food you have to try Itzocan. I tried enchiladas de mole and it was purely fantastic! more

Great food. Terrible service. 3/7/2010

From the time I arrived with a reservation I was told that my party of three would have to sit at a table for 2. When we were finally given a table for 4 we were pressured to order main courses immediately. One in our party was late but we ordered drinks and appetizers immediately. The harassment continued. The wait person was very agressive and very unprofessional. This is a shame since the food was terrific. Pros: The food is fabulous. Cons: Service was nasty and unprofessional. more

This is Special Mexican Food 1/24/2010

I am from Mexico , and this is my first time ever to try this kind of Mexican food, the high stylish and nice serving of Fermin who is the owner and Chef of this good place, makes you feel a new experience about what Mexican food can be. This is a delicious experience that catches your senses , the great taste and the very fine presentation for the plates is really good. And there one day when I came to Itzocan cafe I found that somedays they have new special desserts , that you can not find in other place more

I would like to come back again 1/14/2010

AMAZING PLACE 10/20/2009

excellent!!! this little hole surprised me. I was in the East Village last week visiting a friend who I have not seen for a while, and he invited me to this little place for dinner. Since we first came in, it smelled so good in there. I am from Mexico, so I was expecting enchiladas, tacos, and things like that, but the menu is totally different, it's more like homemade food. However we asked for recomendations, and the waitress helped us to get the more delightfull entrees, and appetizers. We started out with a poblano pepper filled with crab meat, and a huitlacoche souffle. for entrees we got the chicken legs marinated in 3 chiles, and the pumpkin seed crusted salmon. I enjoyed every bite of everything that we odered. my experience at ITZOCAN CAFE was just spectacular. more

Confused by these Rave Reviews 8/9/2009

I was craving a quesadilla so I figured this would be the perfect nicely decorated hole-in-the-wall. We started off with the Nachos. There was literally an ounce of cheese and about two ice cream scoops worth of sour cream. So, if you really like sour cream, these are the nachos for you. We then tried the mushroom quesadilla (for a whopping $9 for literally one tiny taco folded over). Again, they were cheapo's on the cheese and I couldn't taste anything else besides the mushroom. I won't be back. more

Unique Mexican 5/11/2009

recently tried this place - they have amazing mexican food, but it's not your standard fare. Every dish is so flavorful and amazing. I loved it here - will be back soon! Pros: delicious food more

NOT BYOB! 5/2/2009

This place is NOT BYOB!!!! The food was great and the sangria was excellent however, if you are looking for BYOB, this is not the place for you. more

Best Mexican Food in NYC 4/13/2009

My friend and I were looking for something different for dinner (and I was craving Mexican food). Well, what a find we found…Itzocan is a phenomenal. The French touch on the Mexican cuisine is so unique. We were impressed by the service and the price is right! It is not BYOB – however, you must try the Sangria – and they have a nice selection of Mexican beers. I have been back for brunch and dinner…both are delicious. I am going to be returning, frequently! GO! Pros: tasty! more

Amazing Food, Full stomach 2/23/2009

I was walking around the area with me and a couple of friends. I traveled from California to have a great New York experience and I tell you this Itzocan Cafe would be considered an amazing experience by far. A couple of friends and I were just roaming around when we stumbled upon this small tiny restaurant and we were hungry and since California is known to always have mexican food I wanted to try Mexican food here in N.Y. This place has some of the most unique and amazing food, such as the Snapper A La Veracruz which was a special. They always have daily specials in which im excited about for example a special dessert would be 3 Leches Cake which topped it off and was spectacular. I would HIGHLY recommend this place if you are in the New York area, I for sure would be back when I travel back to N.Y. more

Not BYOB, But still great! 1/29/2009

The description here is a bit misleading. Itzocan Cafe is not BYO. My boyfriend and I tried to bring a bottle of wine and were scolded when we asked them to open it. Other than that point however, it was a great meal. Very authentic flavors-- the mole sauce is excellent. Generous portions as well for the price. Tiny, tiny space so if you do not want to get to know your neighbors probably not the place for you. Great place to go before heading to the movies for a relaxed evening. We went at about 7 on weekend night and were lucky to get a table right away, there was a wait at the door when we left at 8. more

Great Taste Makes You Keep Coming Back For More!!! 1/20/2009

I've eatten in this resturant a couple of times, I've enjoyed every dish on the menu but my favorite in the lunch menu is burrito verde. For the dinner menu to start off as a appetizer I would recommend Huitlacoche Souffle really delicious Yum!! We ate Filet Mignon which was done really good. I enjoyed every taste of it. The atmosphere even though it's small great enviroment makes you feel at home. The chef and waiters are great. They are very are out going. People complain about price but the price is right! ^-^ Cons: Parking more

tasty food, but NOT BYOB 12/31/2008

The food was pretty good, but it was not so amazing that I would be compelled to go back to the restaurant. I recommend the asparagus, mango, and mozzarella appetizer, but the flank steak entree was somewhat mediocre in my opinion. I was annoyed when the waitress would not let us drink the bottles of wine we brought and did not appreciate how rudely she answered our questions about the byob/corkage fee policy. There are numerous better options in the East Village, but perhaps we just ordered all the wrong dishes. more

Very different, but soo good! 11/11/2008

Great Mexican food, it has a french twist to it. Tiny little restaurant but it's not the size that counts it's how you use it, LOL...... not really this place has great food and just the right amount of selection. I really liked the dumplings and queso. Pros: Affordable more

  • Past the purple exterior are a handful of tables amidst the slightly shabby decor--a mock temple created through intricate, 3D-patterned faux-stone walls and colorful bric-a-brac. The Central Mexican cuisine is more intriguing than the usual taco-and-enchiladas fare. Though guacamole zips with tart lime, and salsa bursts with fresh tomato, it's silky corn and mushroom souffle with a trace of truffle oil that best highlights Bello's gift. Knives are rendered irrelevant with hearty, brisket-like flank steak and moist bass encrusted with smokey, charred pumpkin seeds.
