Irish Hunger Memorial 8/21/2005

This memorial is located in the Battery Park section of downtown New York City. It is both a metaphor for the Great Irish Famine and a reminder that hunger today is often the result of lack of access to land. The actual memorial has one stone from each of Ireland's counties. The texts along the base are a mix of contemporary and historical accounts on world hunger. It is a very peaceful place to be, and a painful reminder of a terrible tragedy. more

Moving and lovely - a respite from the city 8/18/2005

You might not stumble on this grotto and mound of earth if you were not looking for it. A seemingly organic swell of land rises from the earth, furred with long rustling grasses and dotted with stones brought over from Ireland. A tunnel through the mound of earth speaks to the suffering of the Irish people during the great famine. But even without this poignant significance, this would be a beautiful spot to sit and to discover. This would not make most NYC museum or park guides - try to make a special trip to Battery Park City and steal a moment of deep peace. more
