I've gone to Hers & His for almost 10 years. Bertha has always gone out of her way to accommodate me and almost always does a terrific job. more

They cannot do ""African American"" hair! I'm a student from the nearby University and I thought that i could just come in to test it out since I wanted my hair done for homecoming. I called the salon the day before and asked if they had any stylists that knew how to wash and style African American hair. The woman responded that some of the women did, but it depended on what I wanted. Since I simply wanted a wash and a little curl, I figured I would give them a try. The appointment process was easy and I was received for my (10:45) appointment at 11 o'clock, which isn't a long wait and I was told that when my stylist was done with her client she would take me. That was definitely acceptable and the waiting area was nice. At first, I believed that the young lady would be able to wash my hair and style it properly, she didn't use the proper shampoo for my hair (Just Pantene's version of shampoo/conditioner for African American hair-which does not have the quality ingredients needed to actually moisturize the hair properly). Regardless, I went through the hair washing because i just needed it to turn out so that my hair wasn't all over the place. When it came to the styling, it was by far the worst style I have ever received. Unless I got a new person, the stylists do not know how to style ""Black"" hair. She blow-dried my hair with a roller brush, which provided way to much body and had my hair all over the place. I was facing away from the mirror for the majority of time and therefore, there was no way for me to know how horrible it actually looked until towards the end. When I asked for the ends to be flipped up, she only flipped the back half of my hair and then for the front had it flipped under. I don't know if she didn't understand what I was asking, or just didn't know what she was doing. Towards the end, it was obvious that my hair looked a hot mess. However, the owner or receptionist kept coming by and noting how ""pretty"" i looked, when I really looked like I was 64 years old. It was absolutely terrible. I was totally unsatisfied, I looked much better when I came in to the shop than when I left. It didn't make sense to argue how poorly my hair looked because I knew that she, nor anyone else in the shop were remotely capable of doing my hair at that point. Sadly, I wasted $20 dollars, and walked back to my school's campus with my hood on because I did not want to be seen with such an ugly ""hairstyle"". The only reason why I'm giving this salon 2 stars (instead of zero) is because they actually provided many of the other women in the shop with beautiful hairstyles. I saw many (white) men, women, and child with gorgeous curls, haircuts, and braids. The stylist do know what they're doing, they just shouldn't lie and say they are capable of fixing black hair for a quick buck. I will certainly recommend this salon to my white friends, but not to any ladies with African American hair. Also, most importantly I should note that no one treated me differently for my race. I was not ostracized in anyway, they were all very polite and race isn't the issue. The issue is that they don't know how to style my hair type and completely lied both too my face and over the phone to me, and then had the nerve to charge me 20 dollars so I can run back to my room and try to salvage the damage they did to my hair. Ladies, if you have African American hair: DO NOT GO. They will make your hair look so much worst! Stay home and do it yourself or make the trip to Charlotte. Hers & His Hair Stylists are completely incapable of fixing our hair. more

Jamie is the best! 10/15/2011

I HATE having to find a new hair stylist! I moved here about 13 years ago and since moving here I've had to find a new beautician (sorry if that's not the proper title) 5 different times. Every time I find someone i like and get 'settled-in' What happens? The first one's daughter starts college in FL and she decides to move to FL to be closer to her (i'm sure she was thrilled - I mean one of the main points in choosing a college in another state, is independence...to cut the cord, to test your wings etc.. etc.. ) the second one left the salon in RH to work in Charlotte (follow her to Charlotte you might say... she wasn't THAT good), the third one left the salon she was working for to open one of her own ( or so I was told... where was it? idk - no one bothered to inform me and the owner of the salon she left wasn't about to tell me where to find her... she said she didn't know, but i find that hard to believe) Anyway... Number four got married and was thrilled hubby didn't want her to work... there were others between those that I only saw once while looking for someone new... someone I could trust no to ruin my hair, someone who didn't gossip about her co-workers who weren't there that day, someone who didn't vomit profanity with every other breath, some one who LISTENS, someone patient with my inability to clearly articulate what I want or am thinking i might want done... someone I click with... And i FINALLY found her! Jamie is fantastic. Her listening and comprehension skills are out of this world, her talent with a pair of scissor is excellent, her styling skills are above par, she was able to roll my hair for a perm without it taking 3 hours! She's friendly, kind, not a vicious gossip... She a real pleasure to be around. (she's already married, her daughter is still young -no college in the next couple of years so hopefully she'll be around for a good while. more

DO NOT GET MAKEUP DONE HERE 7/3/2010

My up-do was beautiful. Exactly what I wanted. However? my makeup left much to be desired. The makeup alone would be an F. Hers and His did not inform me until my artist was doing my makeup that their makeup artist had stopped working there, but they let someone who had never done makeup before do it. WTF? I had even called two days before to confirm the time, and they said nothing. I had several backup options that I could have called upon. We were able to fix what was wrong with the makeup in my bridal suite, but it was a total headache. Pros: Hair Cons: Make-up and Service more
