Great Driving Range, Terrible Courses 11/29/2011

As one of the only grass driving ranges in the entire Portland metro area, Heron Lakes has become a regular destination. Unfortunately the courses themselves are both typical RTJ fare and could be plopped down on any relatively flat tract of land in the world. They really need to be blown up and started from scratch. I'm sure the maintenance staff here are incredibly talented because the courses get a ton of play but are still in OK condition. Sadly, the volume of full tee times leads to pretty slow rounds. more

...the more challenge you will find. One of those courses that will find a new way to destroy your good round almost every time. More demanding than it looks, this course is actually tougher than Redtail. Always beautifully manicured, there is no finer public course in town. This course is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design and will punish you for being out of position. Greens are the quickest around that I have found and very severe. There are times when a 3 putt is gauranteed, especially from above the hole and there is simply no room for error. But that is what gets my rocks off and why I play here as much as I can. Rates are municipal rates, so they can't be beat. I started playing here more frequently after finally managing to break par at Redtail, but so far I haven't even threatened par on this course. Its location is a little more remote than Redtail and the scenery is gorgeous. This course is arguably the best in town. more

great course 11/14/2002

A dry, challenging, golf course with not a lot of waiting. Either course is a goldmine. I sure hope the hacks don't discover this gem. more

Best public course in Oregon 8/7/2002

I've been playing since I was 8 and a half and this course was where I always play and enjoy every single time I play at Heron Lakes. With 2 different sets of courses, Great Blue and Greenback, it offers a variety of different settings to play in. Pros: Nice environment, Good instructors, almost like private Cons: N/a, n/a, n/a more

Great course for the price. Probably the best layout in the city. Green course is a little beaten down, but the Blue is always in great shape. more

Easy on 6/16/2002

Heron Lakes has become my fall back course when I am not with it enough to actually book a tee time and I am just fine with that. Although I like to play many courses, I am happy to have found a place that will work to get me on short notice. The starters are great and the marshalls are cool. Blue and green are both decent courses at a fair price. Pros: 36 holes, Good starters, Good instruction Cons: Geese more

Heron Lake's two 18-hole, par 72 courses are an excellent value. While the Greenback has trees and a Northwest layout, the Great Blue is a traditional links-style track. Toughest...
