Near the UNCG campus, this meat-n-two place serves up great fare. Relegated to the basement of a two-story building, it's a little hard to find. Parking is down the hill and around the back off of Spring Garden. Inside the restaurant is split roughly 50/50 smoking and non-smoking. Interior is a little dark with dark carpeting, dark wood tables and chairs and no windows. The menus are typical with your choice of various meats (country style steak, beef tips and rice, chicken livers, polish sausage, etc.) and various vegetable selections (lima beans, black eyed peas, potatoes and gravy, stewed tomatoes, green beens, etc. And yes, mac and cheese is a vegetable!) Daily specials are listed on a small white board near the kitchen. The kitchen area is conspicuously 'in' the dining area (behind a half-wall) and consists of a large steam table, a couple of fryers and a stove. Meals come with cornbread at lunch and biscuits at dinner. The entire staff are great folks, many who have worked there for over ten years...they know many regulars by name. Along with professionals and families, you'll see lots of cops and EMT personnel dining here at lunch...a sure sign that this is one of the best food values in town, the portions are right and the prices are quite low.
Pros: Food, Value, Service
Cons: Dark interior
