so funny how people respond to therapy......someone in denial or not willing to do the difficult work involved, is not going to progress. mada hapworth is incredibly gifted, a problem solver, compassionate, honest and DEEPLY concerned for her clients' welfare. my life is immeasurably better because of her help. more

The shrink who threw me out 8/18/2009

Scheduling of appointments is very easy and professionally handled. The premises of the clinic are nice, tidy & quiet. Dr Hapworth participates in major insurance plans such as BCBS. My first encounters with Hapworth were quite bizarre and in some ways disturbing. For one, he declared himself a follower of libertarian philosopher/author Ayn Rand and spent lots of time on having me describe my career objectives and my situation at work, even though I made it clear that is no major problem area. I had a sense that he was just wasting time chit-chatting, with the meter ticking and running up a bill for the insurance company. Still more bizarrely, Dr Hapworth went on to issue orders about changes to make in my life. For example, even though I have no drinking problem, he ordered me to stop drinking alcohol altogether. At the next appointment he asked if I had stopped drinking. When I said no, he got visibly angry that I had not followed orders and went on trying to bully me into submission. After some back and forth he simply declared he would refuse to continue my treatment unless I followed his orders. A pretty thorough search of available literature has revealed no scientific evidence supporting Dr Hapworth's notions about the damage low doses of alcohol causes in the brain. Nor could I find support for any of the other claims he made about the potential interaction between low-level alcohol consumption and the proposed (but not yet prescribed) pharmaceutical. Disturbingly, Dr Hapworth's nonstandard treatment methods are not only at variance with established practice but are also used as a condition for receiving treatment at all. Making treatment conditional on the patient accepting pseudo-scientific notions and changing his life so as to please the psychiatrist, rather than being convinced by valid arguments to change it for his own sake, strikes me as unethical. Judging from the positive reviews I have seen, Dr Hapworth may well have his merits, but mainly for people who need an authoritarian ""life coach"" to run their lives. People like myself, who prefer discussing matters intelligently and making their own decisions based on facts, evidence and personal preference, will in all likelihood be frustrated and disappointed -- or simply thrown out -- by Dr Hapworth. Pros: Has administrative house in order Cons: Methods out of step with accepted scientific practice more

Can You Handle the Truth? 3/28/2008

True, Dr. Hapworth is not for everyone. Those who can't handle the truth are probably not a good match for his style. He's extraordinarily skilled and intuitive, and he wastes no time in niceties. Those who persevere will find him to be generous and compassionate. There is no one better to have on your side. In my year and a half with him, I've accomplished more than I ever thought was possible -- certainly far more than I accomplished in my previous 20+ years of therapy. Pros: Adlerian approach, practitioner of integrated care, moderated on-line support groups more

Psychiatric Wellness with group therapy 9/17/2007

I was a patient of Dr. Hapworth's from May 2005 until January 2007. I have to say that he is by far the most responsible psychiatrist I have experienced on the east coast. I searched high and low to get the best care for myself. His office is inviting and well organized. They pay close attention to bill related problems and work with you to solve insurance snafus. He has created a blog for his patients to stay in touch with him and whichever group you are associated with while in his care. His intensity is sometimes a bit too much for the fant and weakhearted but, he is usally right on with his analysis and his treatment recommendations. I think that he helped me more in 1.5 years than I have been helped by 12 step programs and a merry go round of therapists over the last 15 years. He is dedicated and his wife is also affiliated with the center so that you feel safe . I highly reccomend him to people who are ready for group therapy, medication management ( not OVER MEDICATION) and a strong commitment to their recovery, wellness and family issues. He really cares about his patients and does not give up on you even when you give up on yourself.\r more
