I eat out ALOT as I belong to a family of wine importers so if I'm eating, then I am ""working"". Japanese food has become one of my favorite foods. Additionally, I have no food prejudice so I eat anything and everything that is put in front of me. My only criteria is that whatever is put on my plate must be dead BEFORE it hits my plate? This restaurant is amazing! The chef was trained in Japan and is extremely good at his art. The food is authentic Japanese food and much thought is put into the dishes served at the sushi bar. If you enjoy eating ""Japanese"" food at Wegman's or really enjoy California or Philadelphia rolls, then I would recommend that you stick to what you are comfortable with at the Wegman?s supermarket. However, these rolls are begrudgingly served at Hana as most restaurants will inevitability have to dumb-down a dish to please local cultural perceptions. However, if you are open to new experiences and will allow this talented chef to guide you through the subtle textures and taste of authentic, sophisticated Japanese food then you've come to the right place! I usually never order from the menu and I like to let the chef surprise me with whatever he feels like making. Oh yeah, and btw I frequent this restaurant for the authentic Japanese cuisine. I have NEVER been disappointed and am amazed by the creativity of the chef Yori. more

Don't Waste Your Time 3/20/2012

We live less than 2 miles from Hana, so we were really hoping to find a little gem in our neighborhood. We were not seated at all the both times we tried to go. The first time we entered the restaurant and waited for the host to seat us. The restaurant was not busy - about half full, which means perhaps 4 tables were seated. It took the hostess over 5 minutes to even acknowledge our presence. Then she looked around at the tables for a bit, then she walked to the other side to have a long talk with the sushi chef. We realized she was not eager to seat us, so we left, very annoyed. The second time we went was about 6 months later. We walked in around 6:15 pm and the restaurant was again, only half full. The same hostess asked us if we had a reservation and we said no. She then talked to the Sushi Chef from across the room (in Japanese, so we didn't understand what she said) and then she looked at us and said, ""sorry, we don't have any tables."" We were shocked and of course, left. She could have said we're booked, but something will open in 30 minutes, or any other number of polite responses. We will never go back. more

Just Note to these who don't know real sushi... 11/18/2010

Hi All, I just wante to make a note here. In Japan, real sushi is about nigiri (slice of fish + wasabi on rice) and maki. The makis are made of usually fresh fish (of one kind!), rice, and nori outside (wasabi is inside). there are non-fish version, cooked version, sometimes, such as kanpyo-maki, futomaki, etc. more

Avoid it! 5/13/2007

Just went to Hana for the first time and will not return. The sushi selection was limited and very overpriced. Maki choices were basic with nothing creative to offer. All of the 6 rolls we ordered were dry and bland. Even the two ""spicy"" ones didn't stand out as spicy. The presentation was the worst I've ever seen. Every roll was just sliced and placed on the plate. I don't expect much in the way of presentation, but generally sushi chefs are able to add maximum appeal with subtle touches. They didn't even include the end pieces of tempura shrimp to play it up. The texture of the rolls was uninteresting, as were the flavors. I've never been so unsatisfied with a sushi meal. Pros: easy location, BYOB Cons: over-priced, reservations requried, underwhelming food. more

not good enough for the price 5/6/2007

I've had sushi for all my life, and this is not a really good place for sushi - they charge too much money for ridiculously little amount of food. Pros: easy parking Cons: you will still be hungry after paying for more than 25 dollars on their deluxe sushi and miso soup. more

Best Japanese Food EVER! 1/18/2007

Love it love it love it!!! Finally a place where you know the appetizers such as the dumplings aren't of the pre-packaged store bought frozen variety! I asked the owner and sushi chef and was told that they make all their food from scratch. Their seafood for sushi and sashimi is absolutely delicious, you can tell its high quality and extremely fresh. Each slice of fish is cut when an order is placed, not pre-cut or cut by machines as some other places do. Everything on their menu reminds me of when I lived in Japan... and tastes like it to! When they say authentic, they mean authentic. Try their tempura! That's what it's meant to look like... not the thick battered onion rings that other places try to pass off as Japanese tempura... Their prices are more than reasonable and it's always a pleasure to eat there. Highly recommended! Enjoy! Pros: Food, service, BYOB Cons: Not open on Mondays :( more

Best Sashimi of the Mainline area 12/11/2006

Hana in the only restaruant that serves Authentic Japanese food in the Mainline area. Sashimi and sushi are always fresh and of good quality. It's a place for people who truly appreciate Japanese cuisine. It's not a place for American style sushi. Pros: High quality fish/seafood more

the worst sushi in all of PA... 7/29/2006

Being new to the area, I will try every sushi place around like it's our job--with the hopes to find the best sushi place in town! Hana was, in all honestly, the most overpriced, disappointing sushi expreience i think I've ever had. The quality was decent, but this restaurant needs a good lesson in portion ratio as compared to price. For example, Hana isn't playing fair when they cut a regular maki roll into eight peieces and charge double the price and call it a ""dinner platter."" Even more disappointing was the sushimi platter (overpriced at $27) which was hardly enough sushi on the plate to even classify it as an appetizer. I think we should have turned around and walked out when the waitress asked us to sit at a table rather than the Sushi Bar becasue she wasn't confident that we'd order the $20 per person minimum to be granted real estate at the sushi bar. The portions were so small, that after a $75 bill for two, we stopped at the grocery store for dinner on the way home becasue we left hungry. DO NOT waste your time or money at this place--you'll be disappointed like we were. Pros: B.Y.O.B. Cons: Price v. Portion Size more

The Worst! 5/25/2006

Our meal was very dissapointing. The restaurant is very small, dark and not very clean. We can get much better sushi from down the street. The servers, although somewhat friendly, can't communicate very well. Unfortunately we will not go there again. Pros: Prompt Seating Cons: Service, Atmosphere, Sushi more

Excellent Authentic Japanese Food! 10/31/2005

Not only does Hana boast a menu with a huge array of Japanese foods, they serve ONLY authentic Japanese foods. Unlike other ""Japanese"" restaurants, Hana stays true to the fact that it is a Japanese restaurant whereas other restaurants are either partly Chinese/Korean owned and also serve Chinese and Korean dishes. Highly recommended at extremely reasonable prices. The best part? It's a BYOB!! more
