Every year we make at least 2 or 3 trips to Selma NC to visit family. We attend the family reunion every October and often visit at least once during the summer months or twice. My husband's family live in the Smithfield/Four Oaks area and we find that by staying at the Royal Inn we are centrally located to the family and the shopping. The motel is not very expensive and it meets our needs for a weekend stay. \r I am disabled and use a power chair or wheelchair to get around. The great thing about staying at the Royal Inn is that I can easily go to KFC, Shoneys and some of the other fast food places . I have also shopped at the Exxon convience store for the usual items that travelers shop at these places. The access has never been good. The only ramp access was on the side of the building and always was obstructed with a trash can or some sort of storage boxes. My grandson would have to move the trash can or the boxes so that I could get up the narrow ramp to get inside of the store.I have spoken to staff over and over again about clearing the entry way so that I could get into the store. Then when we went back and I would go to purchase some items we need or just to shop around the obstacles would be right back there blocking the entry for my power chair to get through. Once again we would move the trash can out of the way and report it to the staff. This has been going on for five years. \r Then I got a extra surprise this year when we visited Selma the weekend of October 9th -the 11th for our annual reunion. There was NO access available, blocked or unblocked, narrow or wide. They had done some remodeling and new concrete had been poured. It appears to be a place for new inground tanks or something like that. There were several cement post protruding from the concrete, which I figured would eliminate the area being used for parking. \r The handicapped logo is painted on the drive to the right of the front door. There is an ice machine, a free brochure rack and a newspaper stand all sitting in front of the area designated for handicapped access and parking. The big problem is that there is NO ramp or lower pavement area at all. The step up from the drive and parking area ranges from 6 inches to over a foot above the surface of the drive and parking space. I took some pictures of the area so you could see the access and the foot high lift that would prevent anyone from being able to get on the sidewalk from the parking area if they are in a wheelchair or power chair. I don't think that anyone with a cane or walker could manage that step up either. \r What could be a very convenient store for me to independently shop while we are staying at the Royal Inn motel has given me absolutely NO access to their products. \r The law states that access must be made available. Every other convenience store in the area have more than suitable access. Great effort has been made by these places to make entry into their establishment as easy and stress free as possible. \r I feel as if this store hasn't even taken their handicapped shoppers into consideration.\r More and more people with disabilities are able to go out into the world and shop, have dinner with their friends and families and act independently to promote as normal a life as possible. I have seen old shops that have made access as cheaply as possible. I have seen everything from a covered ramp with rails and even decorative accents to curbs being hammered away so that a wheelchair can get onto the sidewalk. From the best access to the worse one thing they had in common.... THEY PROVIDED ACCESS....\r If you are in Selma and need gas and maybe a soda and a little snack, don't bother to stop at the Exxon convience store Han-Dee Hugo's on Hwy. 70 E. You will not be able to get in.\r Pros: convenience to motel Cons: No handicap access more
