Excellent freshness 2/10/2009

Hakata has excellent quality Salmon and Tuna. Pros: Fresh salmon and tuna, good food, good atmosphere, convenient location on 48th and Broadway Cons: the seating arrangement is more difficult for large people. more

Good Siu mai and sunumono. Decent sushi 8/29/2008

Went on a Monday night and was the only customer at 930pm. Looked at the appetizers and tried the siu mai and the sunumono. Both were more than edible. In fact I'd come back again. Service was good but did not like the snow beauty unfiltered sake that was recommended. Sushi serving size is less than average but is fresh. Pros: Good siu mai Cons: sushi cuts are smaller than norm more

Rude service, delivery almost 2 hrs for 10 blocks, so-so sushi at high prices 11/13/2007

We called for delivery (10 blocks away) at 12.30 PM on a Tuesday. at 2PM we called the restaurant and were rudely told that there was a printer problem and the orders hadn't gone out on time. Would not tell me when the delivery would come, nor if it had left already. When the food arrived it was cold and the sushi quality was mediocre. Lots of sushi places in the area at much better prices, and MUCH better service! not recommended. Pros: wide menu Cons: high prices, mediocre sushi, terrible service and delivery more

great fresh shushi, cozy romantic atmosphere, excellent for pre or post theater 10/11/2007

my boyfriend and i stoped in this little romantic resturant at the recommendation of a few friends. our dining experience was top notch from the very beginning. the wait staff was was very courteous and the food was amazing!! i had the tuna poke and salmon tartare appetizers and they were to die for. both of these appetizers are served on tara chips and they both were amazing!! my boyfriend isnt a sushi eater, so he ordered the gyoza appetizer, which was awesome, and the hakata grill steak. he asked for his steak to be cooked medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection. i ordered sushi a la carte. i tried their salmon, tuna, fluke and striped bass. all were excellent and tasted super fresh. we were very glad this place lived up to our friends hype. Pros: food, service Cons: small more

Great Sushi in Times Square 10/11/2007

We stopped into this resturaunt after the theater recently and were pleasantly suprised. We ordered the seared tuna entree and a la carte sushi. The seafood was very fresh and did not have the ""fishy taste"" that seems to happen in most sushi places. The wait staff and hostess were all very attentive. For the price and location to the theaters I would definetely return and recommend to friends. more

Something crawling in my food 9/24/2007

I was having dinner in this restaurant with my family last Saturday, Sept. 22. I was actaully enjoying my seared tuna, tempura and beef satay (I had a teka bento box) when suddenly I found something crawling on my tempura shrimp. (This site does not allow me to name what it is. It's brown and small, begins with a C and ends with an H) I lifted my bento box, and right away, the restaurant's receptionist came over and took the box away. (I suppose she saw the shock on my face). more

Unexpectedly good sushi delivery 11/13/2006

Place: No comment, had delivery. Service: A bit late, said 30 mins took 45, but everything was there as expected once it arrived. Food: I wasn't expecting the sushi to be as full, fresh, and well selected as it was. I ordered the sashimi deluxe. One disappointment as the wasabi which was not so potent and seemed a bit bland. Overall: I would highly recommend this for takeout/delivery. Pros: Delivery, Quality of Fish Cuts Cons: Wasabi more

consistently fresh sushi 3/7/2006

Given that I work in the area and often order food at work, this is a place I will call often. The food is always delicious and the sushi has never been anything but fresh. The spider roll & crispy tuna rolls are fantastic, the sashimi is very very fresh. Excellent value for what you get and a terrific place for a pre theatre dining. Pros: Ambiance, Value, Quality more

Excellent for lunch or dinner 3/3/2006

Definitely a reasonably priced stop in the Theatre District. Cute hostess and fast service. The fixed price boxes are plentiful and tasty. Teriaki chicken is excellent as well. It's small but cozy. Definitely do more business in take-out but you won't be disappointed if you stop in. Highly recommended. Pros: Inexpensive, Boxes Cons: Size of place more

Solid quality 7/27/2004

Overall, the food is good for its price. Good sushi and a good menu selection. Very consistent and solid quality. I am a little disappointed that it doesn't have a lunch menu as I find the overall menu a little pricey for lunch around that neighborhood. Service is a bit lacking too during busy lunch hour. Pros: Good quality Cons: , So-so ambience more

Good sushi, great prices 5/22/2004

I usually go to Haru for sushi when in the Times Square area, but I thought I'd try Hakata Grill tonight for a change. What a pleasant surprise! The space (while somewhat hotel-like) is intimate and calming, and the service efficient and friendly. I felt like there were three different people attending to me, which is infrequent at these prices. I got the $25 prix fixe, which included salad, very passable (though superfluous) salmon tartare, forgettable shrimp shumai, a fresh and plentiful sushi entree, AND ice cream for dessert. The green tea was complimentary, to boot. To risk sounding like an ad, you just don't find sushi this good at prices like these in NY. I can't speak for their hot entrees, but I will definitely be back to Hakata in the near-future when in need of a sushi fix! Pros: Generous portions, Efficient service, Calming space more

Good food, good prices 5/12/2004

This is a great place to go for a good Japanese lunch. This is not somewhere I would go on a date, nor would I suggest going if you are looking for a trendy or fancy kind of sushi place. It is, however, good food for a good price...and their ginger dressing is fabulous. more

mediocre 12/4/2003

since this was only a few blocks from my office, my colleagues & I gave it a try. we were greatly un-impressed. nice clean restaurant with modern decor, but the food is just so so. the sushi is actually not very good (we suspect it isn't very good quality). even tho it was very crowded (sounded like a lot of regulars) we would rather recommend Raku on next block down or Blue Chili. Raku's sushi & variety of menu are excellent. Blue Chili's pan asian selections also very good. so we gave it try, but it's Raku or Blue for us. Pros: decor Cons: sushi not so good, food so so, svc not so good more

expectations were too hi... 7/27/2003

truly pan-asian - a good variety but not traditional japanese. after reading the reviews, i had expected better. i know morgan stanley staff do a lot of deliveries/pick ups but i think it's mainly because they offer gift certificates for frequent buyers & not because their food is that good. it's just ok. the sushi was a little disappointing, rolls ok. had better spicy tuna elsewhere. their noodle dishes are fine. SUM IT: try it once to judge for yourself, but don't read the hi reviews until after you've been there. better to order delivery/pickup so you can rack up the 'points'! also, svc could be friendlier. lunch is crowded. Pros: theater district, noodles, frequentbuyer program Cons: sushi & rolls just ok, parking, svc s.b. friendlier more

Cozy sushi 1/20/2003

We enjoyed Hakata Grill. The waitress was extremely nice and pleasant. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting. The sushi was great. We both had the Sushi set which included more than enough pieces. Miso soup was tasty. The prices are comparable to anyplace we've been in the country to get sushi. Must go for anyone who loves authentic Japanese food. Pros: Great location, Inexpensive, Beautiful interior Cons: Poor parking more

Romantic!!! 1/18/2003

Great food, service and ambience. Amazing background music. Very romantic. Pros: price, music, service more

yum! and good service too 1/18/2003

Ate here last night for first time & was pleasantly surprised! Excellent sushi & service, & atmosphere a cut above NY's typical bright-light sushi places. To be safe, make reservations - we dropped in at 6:15 on a pre-theatre night & almost couldn't get a table, but the hostess was very nice and juggled things around so we could stay. I'll definitely be back! Pros: food, service, location more

Surprisingly Good in Times Square 12/20/2002

A really good place that is NOT overpriced, in the heart of Times Square - a SHOCKER! Hakata has great atmosphere, excellent sushi, and good waitstaff. What more can you want? Hakata is also great for a group....I love this place. more

great sushi 11/24/2002

The sushi was great......it melts your in your month..my waiter sucks.....he was unattentive.....but other waiters start helping out...so we were being served by a few people????? the overall service was good. Pros: sushi more

This sushi kicks tail(fin). 10/21/2002

Great sushi, melt in your mouth tuna and yellow tail. You must try the Hakata roll. Veggie sushi choices were creative and NOT run of the mill. The restaurant could use some TLC but didn't detract from the wonderful food. Needs a larger cold saki selection. Pros: Freshness, Portions, Inventive veggie sush Cons: "polish", needs bigger Saki sel more
