COLOR MASTER 9/30/2011

I have been a very happy and satisfied client of Sake's for many years now. Not only is he an expert colorist, but he's a mater of the shears as well. Typically, when you walk out of a salon after getting your color done, you pretty much know that that's the best it's going to look until your next visit. I find that anytime Sake does my color, I am extremely happy when I leave the shop, and unbelievably, it keeps getting better and better as the weeks go on. I don't know how he does that! As far as his styling and cutting abilities go, again, Sake can't be beat. Have you ever had enough confidence in your stylist that when he asks ""what are we going to do today?"" that you can say ""surprise me""? I wouldn't think so, but yesterday, that's what I did and the results, as always, were amazing. Somehow, he just has a gift for knowing what works and knows how to make it happen better than any stylist I've ever been to. It's almost like having your very own Edward Scissorhands. JS more

Damn good haircut and color! 9/16/2011

I just had the best cut and color i've ever had! I walked in to Hair Espirit as i was passing by and had a consultation with KELLY. She listened to my hair issues and suggested a major change. I love the result! I highly recommend her if you want a stylist who listens and is a true artist! more

Two thumbs up! 7/15/2011

I have been going to Hair Esprit for many years. I am very thankful that my friend recommended me to this salon. I have a very long and thick hair and there aren't many hairdressers out there that is as meticulous and patient as Saki. Excellent experience with highlights -- the first time I did it is through Hair Esprit and I have been doing it ever since! Everytime I get my haircut and highlights, everyone notices how great I looked! Our hair is our crown and I found a great salon to get mine polished and shined! :) more

Saki is the best! 2/9/2011

I would highly recommend Hair Espirit and Saki in particular. He has been doing my hair since 1998 - when he was at another salon before Hair Espirit even opened. He does a fantastic job! I go regularly for haircuts as well as highlights and even though I am not a person with naturally ""good hair"" I receive a lot of compliments on my color. Saki is meticulous and takes pride in his work. He will recommend certain changes to style/color from time to time but does not force his opinion on you. And, he is so much fun! We always have a lot of laughs - he's a great guy. The whole staff is quite nice and Alice does a really good job with mani/pedi and waxing. Prices are reasonable. I moved from the the Upper East Side to Long Island last year and despite having countless salons within walking distance of my new home, I still go to Hair Espirit every six weeks. If you are looking for a new salon, give them a try! more

Ladies Please Avoid!! 2/23/2010

Ok. So I was a previous regular at this salon. Got great hair cuts with a girl who has since left. Walked in last week and was randomly assigned to someone who just joined. She has bleached blond curly hair (i forget her name). I told her I wanted long side swept bangs and long layers. Mid way through chopping my long hair off she tells me she was a beautician and they were short staffed and asked her to come in so she just got her hair dressers license. She ended up butchering my hair. She gave me extremely short uneven bangs that are still sticking out on the sides. The rest of my hair was layered in an uneven haphazard way. I am tying it up everyday or putting it up in those butterfly clips to work. Its embarrassing. I was quite upset and talked to the manager Sake, but he did not offer to fix the job, just kept insisting it was fine. Also, I paid ~100, despite the awful mess. Really bad experience and I would strongly advise you to avoid it. This place is not what it used to be a few years ago. Pros: Can't think of any Cons: Amateur new hairdresser more

Sake is the Master 6/24/2008

This salon has one of the best kept secrets in New York City. The manager, Sake, is the best colorist and stylist for the money that you will find, including those fancy 57th street salons that charge 3-4X as much.\r He's been highlighting and cutting my hair for 15+ years. I've never found anyone at that price point who does such a meticulous, professional job. There are many other good stylists at the salon as well. more

don't go there for color!! 4/26/2007

I went to this place where I am used to go for blow-drys from time to time. The experience I had with trying to get new highlights was unbearable. I ask for Tina to do my highlights and she first said that I needed a new base color (68$ of course!) to avoid too mch contrast between lighter streaks and my natural color, which is pretty dark. After spending less than 10 minutes with the foil and disregarding my wish to give me lighter streaks to frame my face, I came out with irregular streaks that were not want I wanted at all. The color was completely off. Then she said she will give me a ""glaze"" with a reddish tone, which came out even worse!! Now there were no higlights (they quoted me 175$ for this, which she insisted was a good price and remember: she only spent about 10 minutes on the actual highlites!!) and my hair looked flat. The owner insisted that I had to pay for the base color, which I did, and asked me to come back a day later. I didn't, because I can't have them touching my hair again!! Too bad, since Brianna (the lady who washed my hair) was very nice. She would have probably done a much better job. Pros: some nice people Cons: bad service, miscommunication and pointing fingers at the customer after doing a bad job more

Kent is the ""One"" 1/25/2007

Everyone knows how impossible it is to find that one stylist/colorist who knows how to do your hair perfectly no matter how many times you go back to them. Well I found my ""one"" with Kent. I never had so much faith in someone with my hair and I can't say enough about the amount of compliments I get every time I see him. His highlighting is so natural and his shaping is wonderful. If you're looking for that one person for your hair, see Kent! Pros: Conveniently located, clean, comfortable atmosphere more

Great hair cut from Saki 11/21/2006

I got a haircut twice from Saki and I am greatly happy with my haircut. I have a very thick hair and many have a hard time cutting my hair. But Saki did a great job and we also had a fun conversation. Again, I greatly recommend Saki (might be spelled Sake, not sure) more

Agreed--Spice is amazing 4/13/2006

this place is a lot of value for the money. Spice has been cutting my hair for two years, since a friend recommended her, and I've never been disappointed. She's good, fast, totally pleasant. more

Highlight hell 1/20/2006

I can't believe this place gets a 9.0 rating. When I first moved into the neighborhood I went here for highlights. My stylist was running 30 minutes late (strike 1), so I agreed to let someone else do my highlights (it was my first time anyway). When I asked for a little more ""contrast"" to my blonde highlights, the stylist literally gave me alternating black and white stripes!! After 6 hours of botched attempts to remedy the siutation, I finally ordered him to stop touching my head and refused to pay for the highlights. I got charged full price for the hair cut and the owner did not even apologize. I had to go back to my old neighborhood and pay full price again just to have it fixed. Beware! Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Unskilled staff, rude owner, Worst in NYC more

What did they do??? 11/7/2005

I asked for a trim and he cut 5 inches off (yes, 5!) and I asked him to layer it and he cut it straight... I didnt notice anything because I went home in wet hair (since I live around the block) when I took the bun off and noticed my hair missing I almost fainted! I will never go back there! I asked for a simple trim and layers.. and now I have shoulder length hair and straight.. not to mention my wedding is in 10 months and I wanted long curly hair! now I have to get extensions.. I think everyone gets my point! Im very disappointed. I dont know how anyone else cuts, but the guy who cut my hair just did not follow very simple instructions. Pros: people were nice, inexpensive, not crowded Cons: Bad haircut, do not follow instruc more

At last- the perfect haircut. 12/30/2002

I love this place! I have been searching for a long time for the ""perfect"" haircut and got it from Sake! I also get lots of compliments on my new hair color recommened by Sake the Hair Director. An added bonus is the best shampoo/massage you ever had. Pros: very comfortable salo, not expensive, not noisy Cons: very limited parking more

Jasmine is ""Style""! 6/24/2002

I have been going to Jasmine for 4 years and no one else would ever do! She always listens and gives you the cut/color you ask for. She even traveled to Westchester to do the hair and make-up for my entire bridal party. There were four of us, each with very different taste and ideas of how we should look. She captured each personality perfectly and we couldn't have looked any better. A bride always glows, but with Jasmine helping there is no doubt you will look and feel your best! more
