Perhaps the chef was once told what BBQ should taste like, but has never himself had it. This place might do better just as a bar!

Not Dad's BBQ, but it'll do 3/23/2011

Being from NC is something of a curse...I know good BBQ and I am always on the hunt for good pulled pork in New York. My boyfriend had been walking past this place for months and we finally tried it last week. It is certainly not as good as my Dad's but I ate so much, I was miserable. The sauce had a different consistency than I am used to, a little thicker than the vinegar base I grew up on and the sandwich came on two huge slices of Texas toast. They also have this ranch BBQ sauce and I ordered a side of that to try it out...great on the fries! I got a "hogarita" from the bar and my friend was plesantly surprised to see "beergarita" on the drink menu. In Brooklyn, we call it a margaveza but it was just as good at the Hog Pit. It was our waitress's first night on the job and it showed, but all in all it was good food, good drinks, and a good price. more

STEP AWAY FROM THE NEW HOG PIT...........STEP AWAY 6/13/2010

First of all the owner, Damon, is a complete asshole! The one and only time I was there, EVER, I witnessed the owner getting completely hammered and being so rude to EVERYONE in the place it was embarrassing. He was yelling at the bartender like she was a slave and kept going up to the girls in the bar saying "hi i'm damon and i own the place, do you wanna sleep with me......ewwwwwww AND HE HAD A WEDDING RING ON......LOSER!! the food was ok and the drink prices are standard but who the hell wants to go to a place where the owner treats everyone like shit..... STAY AWAY FROM THIS ASYLUM more

Try This Place!! 3/17/2009

We went to the Hog Pit last Friday night. The super friendly crowd gave the place a great buzz! The menu is full of comfort food that hits the spot, such as the pulled pork and mac and cheese. The enormous portions come with a very reasonable price tag. You definitely won't leave hungry from this place. And the waitress made the evening even more special by guiding us through the menu and being super sweet! We'll be back. Pros: pulled pork Cons: none more

AWESOME PLACE-GREAT ATMOSPHERE 3/6/2009

I've been to the Hog Pit several times and each time I go it keeps getting better. They just moved in Nov. 08 from downtown and this place is no dissapointment. The food is fantastic and the staff is the best in the city. You'll always feel welcome at the Hog Pit. They have a 2 for 1 Happy Hour EVERY DAY from 5-8 and they draw and excellent crowd. They also have a lot of board games that you can play which makes for a little extra fun at the bar too. The pulled pork is ridiculous its so tender and full of flavor it will have you coming back for more every week. Do yourself a favor and check this place out, bring lots of friends and plan to stay for a long time cause you won't wanna leave!! Pros: HAPPY HOUR EVERY DAY-FOOD-STAFF Cons: NONE more

great business owner 3/6/2009

It's awesome to see a business owner that is responsive I just walked in off the street I can say this is a fantastic spot. more

Great BBQ 3/3/2009

Hog Pit was exceptionally satisfying. Great food, good service, an all around good time. My friends and I tried it for the first time and we were very pleased. We look forward to coming back to Hog Pit. Loved the ribs, and their sides are very tasty. This is the spot for BBQ! Pros: BBQ!! more

Had a Great Time 2/26/2009

I had been to the old Hog Pit in the Meat packing and i have to say that the new place is a definite step up. while it is still country and bbq, it is no longer the dive hole in the wall that it was! Came here with friends after work last night and was really surprised at how much better (and bigger and way less hot) it is than the old location. we just chilled, played pool, and drank some beer (didnt eat) and we had a really nice time. Bartenders were all friendly, the crowd was definitely an after work crowd rather than bikers. Definitely an improvement! I will be back! Pros: great new spot more

Everything's perfect here! 2/23/2009

Love this place. Happy Hour starts you off right with two for one drinks! The food's outrageously good! The ribs are awesome, the pulled pork sliders with coleslaw were a slam dunk with my crew. We had a blast. We also thought the bartender was really cute! ; ) Great music, the jukebox will play any song you can think of. Pros: Great jukebox, cool bartender Cons: couldn't find any. more

Best Time Ever! 1/23/2009

We love this place. Karaoke tuesday was a Bast. They put the words on a 60" screen to sing along to. We had a blast! Pros: awesome food, great music, plenty of fun! Cons: nothing I can think of. more

Vegetarians -- reconsider your ways! 1/16/2009

The ribs at the Hog Pit are to die for! They are tender, moist, fall off the bone, and just melt in your mouth. The BBQ sauce is amazing -- full of body and flavor. It goes perfectly with the ribs. The pulled pork is the best I have ever had, by far. Again, it is moist, enhanced by the sauce, and just plain impossible to stop eating. The sides, aaahhhhh, the sides..... Perfect collard greens, delicious mashed potatoes, perfect mac and cheese. So difficult to pick from all the things I love in this place. No better BBQ in the South, and certainly not in the NY area. The decor is interesting and thematic, and complements the food quite well. And while many vegetarians might not be willing to give up their dietary preferences, there are tons of meat-free sides here for them! more

Amazing 1/16/2009

I went with my father, a meat eater for life and myself a vegetarian and we each had incredible meals! That's extremely rare for BBQ. The flavors of each dish pop in your mouth without being overwhelmingly too sweet like other BBQ joints. I can't wait to go back with my friends. more

Delicious BBQ 1/15/2009

I am not sure who the previous reviewers were, but they are nuts! I have never had a bad meal at the Hog Pit. The BBQ is delicious and the sides are to die for!!!! I travel to NY just for the collard greens...and I'm from the South!!! The fish, ribs and chicken have always been juicy and delicious. Definitely worth the trip....and don't forget the cheese grits. more

Great Food 1/15/2009

I have no idea what these reviewers are thinking. Perhaps they went to the wrong restaurant. The food is great. The portions are more than generous, the meat is juicy and succulent, and they are famous for their mac and cheese. I definitely recommend the hog pit to anyone looking for some good barbecue and large portions! more

WORST WAITRESSES EVER!!!! 11/14/2008

Save yourself some grief and NEVER go here. The wait staff at the new Hog Pit on 26th St. has no experience, no common sense and they should all be fired. Here's what my experience was like: - in an empty restaurant, my group of 10 had to waive down the waitress just to order a drinks - subsequent orders were taken only when demanded and the rest of the group was never asked if they needed a refill as well - waitress poured someone ELSE'S half finished beer bottle into another person's glass of beer - when alerted of this error, they brought back less than HALF a beer! - waitress walked away so i grabbed the beer, waited for her to finish up with another table and then let her know that this was completely inappropriate and that when you ruin someone's drink, you get them a new one - waitress comes back to MY table and gets in MY face about the way i approached her - apparently, the customer is never right - 15 minutes pass before another waitress brings the beer and asks what happened - no apologies, no "this one's on us", nothing - they then have the audacity to charge full gratuity because we were a large group These waitresses were both complete morons. This is the worst service I have had in NYC in 4 years. The only reason you should ever go here i if the owner/manager posts on top of this and lets everyone know that they have revamped their staff. The food just isn't good enough to put up with this kind of service. Pros: None Cons: Service more
