Gypsy's Trattoria Italiano

This Italian place in Berkeley's "Asian Ghetto" seems a bit higher scale than the other places, but it's definitely a place worth checking out. The food is tasty and the prices are fairly reasonable, and there's place to sit inside. The portions of food are good-sized. It's close to campus and is fairly popular with students in the area. more

I went here awhile ago, and I was pretty satisfied. I had one of their infamously huge calzones, and it was great. Lots of delicious ingredients and their sauces are always well-made. There's always a long line and lots of people eating, which goes to show that they have great service and delicious food to be worth waiting in lnie for. However, my only complaint is that because it's so busy, you often have to wait for awhile before your order gets processed and you get to start eating your long-awaited meal. However, it's worth it, go try it! more

Italian fast food. There is almost always a line, and definitely take your food to go unless you enjoy your pasta with a nice swarm of flies. The restaurant itself is always stuffy and just not very sanitary in general. I recommend the Godfather’s favorite. The portions are large and each order comes with soggy, delicious garlic bread. A good place to go if you need a quick, filling meal. more

Gypsy's sells a great variety of Itallian food. They offer over a couple dozen different pasta dishes. But personally, it's all about the calzones. They take a little longer to get made because they are made fresh when ordered, but I really think it's worth it. However, if you're in a hurry to get your food and be on your way, consider a different restaurant. The wait takes at least 15 minutes and if you're ordering a calzone, expect to wait 20 min. more

Great italian food for the price. I haven't found anything comparable in restaurants priced twice or three times as high. I would recommend the pollo pesto. more

Decent prices. Good Italian food. I have tried almost all of the chicken pasta dishes, and I recommend them all. I have heard the Calzones are delicious too, and they're very big; bowling ball size. Gypsy's Trattoria Italiano is a very popular restaurant. It's always very busy, and the food never disappoints. The dishes are good sizes. Filling. Gypsy's Trattoria Italiano is located on Durant in Berkeley. This place is storming with UCB students which keeps this place in good business. I've been here several of times and theres always a line. The service is good though and pretty quick to pick up your order and fill it. The food on the other hand is ok and not the best. But the quantity is massive! They give you enough food to serve two people on one order. Oh parking is a pain so good luck. more

Gypsy’s is a favorite among the students in the area. And its easy to see why. They offer a pretty large menu from pasta’s, calzones, to pizzas. All are pretty good, far from great, but with the low prices and large quantities, the value is good. Don’t expect to have an outstanding meal, but when you feel like some quick Italian food, this is the place to go. more

I just got home from my first meal at Gypsy's. We had ventured out to go to La Val's on a Thursday night, but they had closed at 9! Right across the street, Gypsy's beckoned. We didn't expect it to be as good as La Val's, but it was! The kids had a Chicken Salad and a Greek Salad - each under $5 and each huge enough to satisfy a hungry pre-teen. I had a pasta dish and my husband had a calzone, both were huge and came with a large green salad for only $1.99 extra. My pasta dish was the type that would run around $15 in a fine dining establishment - roasted red peppers, spinach, and penne pasta in a creamy tomato sauce. Hubby's primavera calzone was stuffed with cheese, sauce, and assorted vegetables which included lots of tasty Kalamata olives. The green salad itself was remarkable in that it had romaine and spring greens with lots of tomatoes - no iceberg! Each meal came with a single piece of French bread topped with a couple of cloves of roasted garlic - yum-yum. We loved our meals at Gypsy's and the 4 of us came away stuffed for around $26. There is no "atmosphere" to speak of, just small simple tables under harsh fluorescent ceiling lights with a view of the soda cooler. I took home a paper menu and next time plan to get takeout to eat in nicer surroundings. The kids made us promise that we will go back soon. We will be back!! more

Greasy and cheap describe Gypsy’s selection to a T. The menu is expansive and everything is under $7. The portions are very generous and it makes one wonder what they’re putting in it that makes it so cheap. All dishes are served with garlic bread and are ready (usually) in under 10-15 minutes. They offer calzones, gnocchi, spaghetti and all the usual Italian dishes no frills. more
