Went to Great Lakes Shipping Company tonight for my birthday dinner. We waited 15 minutes before anyone came over to acknowledge we were even there. Our waiter was horrible, and looked at us like we were nuts when we complained that our food was served cold. I have never had such bad food and bad service. Needless to say, I will never go back. more

My husband and I had dinner tonight at Great Lakes Shipping Company and it was fabulous from start to finish. Management met us and seated us at a fireside table for two. Our wait staff was kind, courteous and most accommodating. They went out of their way to make our experience as good as possible. Crab cake appetizer was superb, best we have had. The salad bar was fresh and offered plenty of variety. The walleye was fresh and perfectly prepared and my filet was prepared exactly as I ordered. We shared the cashew cheesecake and it was divine. We highly recommend the GLSC and look forward to returning. more

Steer clear 12/13/2012

The staff was great when we called ahead. (We were checking for food allergy purposes). They were very helpful. We had no problems with our drink waitress. But it did take at least 20 minutes for our food waitress to come to us, and she only returned because one person flagged her down. After that, she was extremely slow every time we asked for something. The only reason we were able order at all was that we had our menus closed and made it abundantly clear that we were ready. Given the prices, the food was just OK, nothing fancy like you would expect. We came in the first place because of a gift certificate. If we had not had that gift certificate, we would have gotten up and walked out. It was simply ridiculous. We were very obviously discriminated against because we are young. Very insulting. Will definitely not be returning and will certainly not be recommending it to anyone. Actually, we will advise others to steer clear of this place. more

We had a fine meal &an enjoyable evening. 1/30/2012

I was really perplexed reading the negative comments. My husband & I dined here this evening & had a fine dinner & evening. We're over 40, but HARDLEY senior citizens...but I digress. We too had a certificate from restaurant dot com. It clearly states it needs to be presented in its entirity to be valid BTW. We were greeted nicely upon entering. The decor is not all upscale & neon, but nautical & authentic...uh can you say Great Lakes Shipping Co.? I had Island Shrimp, my husband had grilled Mahi Mahi. both delicious. Cocktails were also good. This fine restaurant has been serving GR for 40 years. How many of those are still around? Pros: null Cons: null more

not worth it 12/27/2011

We went to t his restaurant because we wanted to try somewhere new..We also had a coupon from restaurant. com. The manager was very unprofessional and rude when we asked if he could just get the number and code from our Iphone and not have to actually print it off. (no where on the paper does it say it needs to be printed off) Yet he would not allow us to use it. He also did not even thank us for coming in as we left or anything. He was not customer friendly at all. Pros: null Cons: null more

Overpriced and Underwhelmed 10/23/2011

I had a $25 restaurant dot com certificate so we decided to try it. When we looked up the menu online, we also found a 2-for-1 coupon that we brought along for our friends. The restaurant was packed (mostly senior citizens), but we got seated right away. Tables were very close together and not much space to walk to our table without bumping into people. Pros: null Cons: null more

Not bad, a decent place. 2/9/2010

Decent food, standard salad bar, rolls and the usual selection. The fireplace and brick atmosphere was nice for a date but the overall food was not that impressive for the price and nothing noteworthy about the food selections.\r \r The phone book coupons however are great and make this much more affordable and worth trying once! more

No expectations! 12/28/2009

Most people who attend this fine restaurant have expectations before going in. We however never put expectations on any visit therefore enjoying what there is to offer us. We had a grand time with above average service and great food! Some people However, you just can never please! Pros: Service and Atmosphere Cons: Busy more

Chilly Restaurant 12/20/2008

My wife and I visited Great Lakes Shipping this evening. We were seated at a table for two on the north side of the restaurant. The restaurant is heated very poorly. It couldn't have been higher than 60 degrees where we were seated. I asked for a different table more toward the middle of the restaurant and away from the windows, but was told that all other tables were reserved. There were empty tables all over the restaurant. Pros: Food was good Cons: Chilly, high prices, poor service more

Poor quality meat, Poor quality Staff. 8/18/2008

Why did I return for a 2nd time? Meat was ordered Medium Rare. Was Served Medium Well. I returned it twice. We left after 3rd attempt. They wanted us to pay for our drinks. We refused. Went to Louis Benton. Pros: Leaving Cons: Food, Staff. more

Poor quality food, poor service 10/19/2007

The walleye was good. The steak was thin, tough, cooked beyond requested doneness. Two of us ordered the same turf and surf and they were identical in poor quality. The third ordered Chicken Piccata and the chicken was absolutely tasteless, requested no capers to be in the dish but they were anyway. The rolls were cold and stale, the salad bar was good. Pros: Good salad bar, good water. Cons: Poor food quality, poor service more

Disappointing 7/29/2006

Suppose to be a contender for best casual dining in town. Just dined at Watermark Grille (another contender at Cascade) and it was a night and day experience. GLSC was overpriced, food was average to below, steak was tough and overdone, side items were good (seafood chowder, vegies, etc),, flat bread appetizer was good, facility feels old and a bit dingy, and smoky odor from previously being a smoking facility.... but once you dine at a place like Watermark where food was reasonably priced, very gourmeish, restaurant cared about the quality of their food, best steak ever tasted (porterhouse), great appetizers, great views, etc.... you'd love them too. GLSC needs to do some updating and make their food worth the price. Pros: Good for drinks Cons: Overpriced, not met expectations more

Use Entertainment Coupon! 11/1/2005

My husband and I tried out Great Lakes as we had a buy 1, get 1 dinner coupon from the Entertainment book. The food was exceptional and the price was right! The wait staff was friendly and professional. The decor is cozy with dim lights and candles. more
