This restaurant has a nice decor and very good entrees , but stay away from the sushi. It was by the far most expensive I have seen in the triangle and certainly no where near the...

patio service was slow 7/7/2006

We ate a good meal there last night. The only beef I have is the service was not up to par. The restaurant was not even half full, but we were there for 2 hours! It was frustrating waiting for beverages and for the bill. Overall, we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. more

excellent bar service 6/7/2006

From out of town...went with friends only for drinks at the bar. Our bartender Alex was one of the best bartenders I have come across...he is very cute too..Highly recommend to go for a good time. Pros: Alex the bartender Cons: too smokey more

Best lunch around 4/15/2006

This is about the lunchtime buffet, as I have not been there recently for dinner. It's easily possible to get in and out in less than an hour, with a great and healthy lunch. There are so many choices at the cold and hot bars. I particularly enjoy the Greek dolmades, the yogurt, the chicken salad, and all the vegetable salads. The soup is great, fresh fruit is abundant, and even the rolls are good. I highly recommend the lunchtime buffet. You can eat at one of the tables, either inside or outside. Or you can get a take-out container. Payment is by the pound. Be careful not to take more than you will eat, or the price can add up. Pros: Great, healthy food, Make your own choices, Quick Cons: can get expensive more

another giorgio's restaurant gone down the drain 12/15/2005

George's service used to be reliably good and the food was fantastic. The prices were always high but it was worth it to get away from the undergraduate scene. Now the food is just mediocre, the undergrads have taken over the smoky bar, and the service gets worse everytime. An example of the bad service is the waiter having no idea what the specials were and being unable to explain the items on the menu, never coming by to fill up our waters or ask if we're okay, and having to wait forever for the check. Also, the last time I was there I noticed their hygiene score lying flat on a shelf, hidden from view. No wonder. It's the lowest score I have ever seen! I couldn't believe a place like George's had a 90. Let this dinosaur die. Cons: Overpriced, Poor service, Mediocre Food more

Cool, upscale/casual dining in Durham?! 5/14/2005

Who knew??? My friends and I have only eaten here once, but found the experience to be pretty good! The winelist was decent, with lots of affordable options. Our server was excellent - attentive, knoweledgeable about the menu, and helpful, despite the fact it appeared to be a busy prom night. I had one of the specials... a fish that was pan seared and really excellent - not overcooked. The ambience is pleasant - not the best place for a date with the noise and crowd, but great for friends and groups. The only confusing thing is the fact that the sushi is only served at a small sushi bar area near the entrance of the restaurant. Hence, our expectations of having sushi were not met, but we had a good time anyways! Pros: Ambience more

pay-by-the pound...the best lunch in town! 3/6/2005

I've been to George's Garage at least a dozen times now, but its versatility continues to amaze me. I particularly enjoy the pay-by-the-pound deal, and I often visit George's around lunchtime to take advantage of their great selection. I'm able to eat healthier this way, for I can mix and match whatever I want...a little salad, a little fruit, some veggies, some pasta, or even their awesome eggplant parmasean or other great hot dishes! Its great for a Saturday or Sunday brunch too. But George's transforms each evening into a wonderful full-service restaurant. My wife and I actually had our rehearsal dinner here, and spent the preceding New Year's eve at George's tootheyve always been very accommodating. Although the service can sometimes be a bit slow, I'm always very pleased with my meal. And the sushi bar is great too! But lunch at Georges will always be my favorite. Pros: pay-by-the-pound, great selection, versatility (sushi!) Cons: slow service at times more

The Worst Dining Experience EVER! 2/14/2005

Last night, my fiance and I took my father and brother to George's for a birthday dinner for my dad. Our waiter barely spoke English and seemed to not be at all familiar with the menu! To make a very, very long story short, it took nearly an hour before we got our food, and when we did, my brother's entree was ice cold. Other tables that came in after us pretty much finished their meals before we had a bite to eat. The waiter was unapologetic and even rude, and the manager was even worse. My poor father was so upset that he couldn't even eat his food. I have never written a review of a restaurant, but after our horrendous experience at George's Garage, I feel obligated to tell the world to AVOID this place! Pros: NONE! Cons: Horrible service, Mediocre food, Overpriced! more

Yum! 12/5/2004

The (red) dragon roll at the sushi bar is the best sushi I've ever had! I find myself thinking about it often! Yum! My husband ordered this and I wanted to trade my salmon with him! I've dined twice and was pleased both times. The staff is friendly. Check out Cafe Paizade also....Garage's upscale sister. Pros: Large groups, Great food Cons: , Busy concept, Pricey more

My absolute favorite restaurant! 6/9/2004

This place is by far my favorite restaurant! The atmosphere is unique and the food is outstanding. The service isn't always timely - but when you're dining with friends, you barely notice! The calamari is the best in town, and I highly recommend the Pinot Grigio and the Zuppa de Pesce, and I'm not a big seafood fan! A truly outstanding restaurant! Pros: Delicious food, Great Atmosphere more

Crappy Service, or lack there of 3/29/2004

This is the SECOND time in as many months that my wife and I have had horrible service. I can give anyone the benefit of the doubt but even thought the food is decent I can spend my money elsewhere for a more agreeable experience! Pros: portions, good area Cons: , service, service more

very disappointed 2/17/2004

I'm still thirsty and hungry. My coworkers and I went to George's for drinks and apps. We were treated to truly sub-par service. It took the waitress 4 tries to get our martinis right - when she actually managed to take and deliver our orders. These were straight from the martini menu - nothing special. I understand being understaffed sometimes, but we gave these people a head's up that our group was coming, and we still got crappy service. If someone had actually *served* us, we would likely have spent twice as much money. It was doubly annoying that George was hanging out at the bar schmoozing while we were being badly served. What happened to the good old days when business owners actually cared about the quality of their product and sometimes even worked to make sure things got done? Sigh. Next time we're heading to Tosca. Pros: convenience Cons: , management more

Cool Spot 1/27/2003

The food was wonderful, the service excellent and pleasant...we will be back more

All Over the Place 10/14/2002

I've eaten here twice and the first time I found the steak very good; the sushi, suprisingly, was even better, even varied, though pricey. The second time I was not very impressed. The service is young and slow and the place gets obnoxiously loud. For a few extra bucks get a real treat down the way at Magnolia Grill. more

Pleasantly surprised! 10/13/2002

After reading some of the current reviews, I was not looking forward to our Saturday night dinner but man was I surprised. Everything was absolutely perfect from the service, to the wine, dinners, and the incredible dessert and coffee. I don't see how there would be any bad reviews of Georges. I encourage anyone who's had a bad experience there to try again and then report back because I have to admit, I wanted to find things to complain about, but only found one. On my surf and turf, I got a 6oz filet and ONLY 2 shrimp. Puh-lease, I should've gotten at least 4 shrimp for $26 George. That said, everything and I do mean EVERYTHING ELSE WAS PERFECT. Pros: outstanding service, food presentation, lovely flavored food Cons: small dinner portion more

Ehhhhh 8/2/2002

George's used to be THE place to go in Durham. But with the Dukies gone for the summer, you might as well stay home too. Definitely on the downslide. But, if you like 6 people on the dancefloor, you'll have a blast. Music's normally great. Bartending service is getting better. Generally not too crowded. more

Disappointed--again 5/19/2002

Don't be fooled--the professionalism is a facade. The service and management are negligent and apathetic. We sat in the sushi bar on a couple different occasions--both times we had to struggle to get any server's attention (who was ours?). Once, the food came at least an hour later. On another visit, the food never came. Nor did the waiters. There are plenty of great restaurants around--go somewhere else. Try Waraji for sushi--it's the polar opposite of the disappointment you'll find in the sushi bar at George's. Pros: decor Cons: Service, bright lighting more
