Geek Squad Alternative 8/5/2010

At one point or another we all need computer repair help and I am no different. I found myself in need at the worst possible moment. In the middle night, when everything is closed and the night before a report is due. I called Geek Squad online support for help and was charged for the $199 virus removal service. They connected to my pc and attempted to remove the problem. After a couple of hours and a whole lot of coffee and nail biting they call me back and say there is nothing they can do. This time, the guy I spoke to had a heavy accent and seemed to be calling from overseas. And long with this and the fact they said the virus is too embedded to be removed without causing further damage and system instability. I get off the disappointing phone call and am still sweating because this report is 35% of my overall grade in this course and I absolutely had to have this done in the morning. I run a quick Google search for a solution when I find SecureRemoteSupport[dot]com who provides online services and have a “No Fix No Pay” guarantee. Wow that would be nice if Geek Squad offered the same promise. Within an hour they had diagnosed the virus and had removed it completely for $105. And best of all, I didn’t lose any of my work and my operating system was completely repaired. Apparently the Geek Squad isn’t as good at their job as secureremotesupport[dot]com is. I really appreciate their diligence on fixing my issue and suggest others think twice before contacting Geek Squad to fix their computer. more

Think Twice 3/31/2010

My son got a horrible virus on his computer from Myspace. It was causing the computer the run very slowly and it had nonstop pop-ups. I was frustrated because when his computer is down he wants to use mine, and I need mine for work. I took it in to Geek Squad to have the virus removed and to have some updated virus protection installed. \r When I went into the store, I told the salesman what was going on and he said he'd take care of the problem. While I was talking to the salesman, he kept trying to persuade me to purchase additional services like optimization and insisted I buy additional memory otherwise Id have big problems later down the road. I explained that its my sons computer, and that he doesnt use it for anything except music and social networking. He didnt need all the extra trinkets. He kept pushing the issue until I flat out told him if he didnt want to preform the services I asked for, and ONLY the services I asked for then I was taking my computer elsewhere. After that he was short with me and said the machine would be ready in tree days.\r I have never been so disappointed with customer service. If I go into Safeway to buy apples, nobody is going to pressure me into buying oranges as well. Three days later, I picked up the computer and the repairs were done, and I was charged $220 dollars. When I had gotten home I had found that the computer was running without any pop ups but still seemed to be extremely slow and not functioning like it had before it had been infected. I started doing some research on Geek Squad and I found a company called Secure Remote Support and called them completely out of curiosity, and was floored to learn their rates were MUCH lower than those of Geek Squad and they guarantee customer satisfaction or your money back. I asked them if they would diagnose the issues, which they did for free. They informed me that all of the infections werent removed and that there were still traces of the major infection as well as many many others that were affecting the speed and over usability of the machine. I asked them to document all of this, as they did, and then hired them to repair the problem, which they did. They offered me a upsell, which was a promotional optimization I took it, and it did what they said it would do. The computer appears to be working better than when I first purchased it actually, so I'm quite pleased. I was able to take that documentation and fax it into the headquarters, and file with the BBB to get my money refunded from Geek Squad Im a happy camper, the computer is one piece and secureremotesupport-dot-com saved the day as far as im concerned. \r more

Another Poor Experience 3/17/2010

Geek Squad has disappointed another customer. I recently had them take care of some performance issues on my notebook computer. When I received it back from their repair department not much had changed about it. I stopped back by with it within a couple of days to ask if maybe they forgot to do something. I was told that they did everything they could to speed up the machine. They told me next it was just an older slower computer. That's strange because it was less than 6 months old. This gave me the impression that he really didn't know what he was talking about and was just making up an excuse to get rid of me. I left feeling like I had been conned out of my money. I decided to take it to another service just to verify what I suspected. And when secure remote support was done with their diagnosis I was right. The geek squad hadn't cleaned anything up and had just charged me to babysit my notebook for a week. Now I call to speak to a supervisor and no one ever responds to my messages and I'm still waiting to receive my refund. more
