We read about this place and knew we were going to Cape May so decided this would be where we'd have dinner. The chile relleno mentioned in the review sounded delicious, with ingredients such as jicama and pumpkin seeds. Although all our food was tasty, it was pretty bland and not what I'd call Southwestern. I grew up in the heart of the Southwest so I think I know a bit about it. Perhaps, like many restaurants, they're afraid of making things too spicy for Americans, but these dishes had almost no spices at all.
My chile relleno was supposed to be filled with shrimp and cheese, jicama, pumpkin seeds, and I can't recall what else. Sounds exotic, no? The shrimp were pulverized, and with the dim lighting, were indistinguishable from the lumps of too-much cheese. The red sauce covering it all tasted like Italian marinara sauce, not remotely like a Mexican sauce. I've ordered chile rellenos in many restaurants and they vary widely, but I feel the chile pepper should be intact and stuffed with ingredients. This was more like the pepper had been opened up and layed OVER the ingredients. On the plate, it all just fell apart.
The same was true of my daughter's cheese enchiladas. Just a big boring cheesy tomato-saucy mess. My wife had the rainbow trout; it was the best of the bunch, tasty but nothing very Southwestern about it. The leftovers from it we turned into another meal for us: fish tacos. But this time we added enough salsa to make it authentically Southwestern.
But the staff was very friendly and they let us keep our dogs with us on the patio while we ate! Otherwise we would've had to just go home hungry.
Pros: Friendly staff, dog-friendly, nice atmosphere
