Friedhelms Bavarian Restaurant

Every year my wife and I make our way to Fredericksburg at the end of October for the Food and Wine Festival which I highly recommend. We finish our day with a few beers and a good hearty dinner at Friedhelms. I was directed here by a friend in college from Fredericksburg. If you don't spend a little while at the bar and mellow out with a couple authentic German beers before you have dinner you have missed half of the experience. I recommend being ready to wait for a table and forgiving of the staff who are over extended but typically very nice. The food is wonderful and a really good mach for German beer. You have to not be in a hurry to eat and just loose yourself in the abundant atmosphere that has to do as much with the people as the decor. If you are looking for a new dining and cultural experience this is your place. If you are looking to eat and go then try some of the other wonerful places in Fredericksburg. This restaurant has the potential to be the most popular German eatery in the area; the food is true to German taste, from the cabbage soup to the schnitzels, but the service leaves much to be desired. I've been going there in the summer for 18 years now, and the food is consistently satisfying, but the staff is definately overworked. Last time i went, our waiter had about 10 tables to himself, 2 of which were parties of 6+, but he did make a point to apologize to us about the wait, and because he took such a good attitude with us about the sluggish service, we didn't hold it against him or the place. I have been going to Friedhelms for over 10 years and have always been treated well, however, being a tourist town the staff is a bite jaded. The food is the the best German food to be had in Fredericksburg next to my mothers. I don't recommend going there on the weekends and prefer to go there for lunch. Try the ""Jagger Snitzell"" (possible spelling error) . The steaks are a bite overpriced , but the German beer selection is good. The atmosphere is lacking and very small town.
