Best

I visited fresh last week after reading a lot of reviews that were mostly very good. I wanted to see for myself if it was that good. The meal ended up being better then expected...

Worst

We didn't have a very good experience at Fresh. We had to wait 15 minutes after we were seated just to get a menu and some water! Then we got a lecture on why you can't order tu...

Don't Believe the Hype 11/4/2002

A very disappointing evening at Fresh. Despite a 9:30 reservation, we weren't seated until 10:30 - by a surly host who acted as if he was doing us a big favor. But we were lucky. Many other customers waited even longer. Although our waitress was pleasant and accomdating, the overpriced food was quite the opposite. My $32 ""Kobe"" tuna was cold and incredibly salty. There are many other fine seafood restaurants in NYC more deserving of your money. Cons: Rude, Slow, Overpriced more

Swimmingly Good 10/30/2002

We have been to Fresh a couple of times and it just keeps getting better. The sea food is so fresh and creative.I mean baby squid stuffed with braised short ribs, come on who would ever think of that.Okay maybe Eric Ripert. Who ever said the service was bad didn't have Dominick as a waiter. He was everywhere we wanted him to be.The only problem with Fresh is deciding what to eat, there are just to many things to choose from.I think next time I'm going to order 4 appetizers and call it a night. Pros: fresh seafood more

Awesome quality and variety of seafood 10/27/2002

Excellent seafood with so many menu choices deciding what to get was the hardest part, but still fun. more

Good 10/22/2002

very quiet, romantic.....felt like I was under water.....food was good....esp. the lobster..... more

Disappointing 10/21/2002

I was there with a group of people on Tuesday night. We thought the food was really good but the service was horrible. A fly landed in my friends wine and it took the waitress a while to bring back a new glass. The same friend also asked for a well-done steak and it came out rare. This happens from time to time because good chefs dont like to cook a steak to death. The problem was that they did not bring it back to her until we were all done eating. The waitress also forgot to bring my cappuccino. Pros: good food, Modern décor Cons: bad service, expensive more

Pretentious, Overhyped 10/11/2002

Very Dissapointed. I took my girlfriend to Fresh last night mainly due to an article I read in the New York Times braging about their Ipswich clams. THEY WERE SOME OF THE WORST EVER. THE AMOUNT OF SAND THEY CONTAINED CONTINUES TO HAUNT ME. CRUNCHING AND SCRATCHING W/ EVERY BITE. Also the first round of drinks appeared to be watered down, now why would they do that? And the service stunk, completely unaccommodating, completely useless and nonexistant. The deserts were pedestrian. The only bright spot is that we were able to get a table easily, but now I think I know why. Oh and the hostess was quite nice, that's all. Pros: Large Menu Cons: Watered down drinks, Horrible service, Sandy clams more

After 500 bucks we were still hungry! 10/10/2002

Fresh has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere and the service is extremely attentive. However, since our server was new she was not able to recommend dishes and had no knowledge of the wine list. Shouldn't every new waitperson be familiar with the restaurant's wines? The food was delicious and the ever-changing menu is creative but Fresh's biggest downfall was that after wine, appetizers, entrees and dessert (and 500 dollars for 5 people) we were still hungry!!! Pros: taste, atmosphere, service Cons: cost, portion size more

My boyfriend renamed it rotten 10/7/2002

Went there Saturday night, 4 of us. Pretty restaurant. We arrived there at 8:45 for a 9:00 reservation. We were finally seated at 9:50 and that would not have happened if we had'nt seen the hostess seating another table of 4 who arrived after us. While waiting at the bar they ran out of grey goose vodlka? after our first round of drinks. Once seated, the service was sooo slow, the bus boy kept pouring regular water in our glasses which were filled with pelligrino..the food... 3 out of 4 liked our dinner, my boyfriend ordered the tuna which was completely bland. The boulibase was fine. the swordfish was great and the steamed lobster was good .Over all dinner was a big disapointment and my boyfriend decided that they should rename it ""rotten"". Overpriced, unorganized and really slow service. We would never go back... Pros: pretty Cons: bad service, over priced more

we were pleased 10/1/2002

the menu was excellent. everyone cleaned off their plates. we liked the variety of fishes. the halibut cheeks and codfish tongue were excellent as appetizers. (don't be scared - it's not what you think) we received good service..they didn't charge us extra for bringing in a birthday cake. the decor/ambience was soothing (but that one mural has got to go) be prepared to have the address on hand when locating this place or you'll miss it. Pros: good service, creative menu more

Worth every penny! 9/30/2002

What a wonderful restaurant. Our entire meal was perfect, a super wine list, with many affordable bottles. Try the New Zealand white. Fantastic dry wine. We had the blue fin appetizer, and the gazpacho - flawless. And then the salmon and lobster, both superb. They have good size portions too. And dessert was a sublime finish. Make reservations ahead, and don't miss this place! more

Nice Experience 9/26/2002

We happened upon Fresh by accident and walked in and got the last table they had at 9pm. They had a very large selection on the menu and the wine was great. The waiter gave some excellent suggestions for appetizers and we were glad we listened. All in all a nice night. The place is very open and has interesting interior. Would not recommend for romance, but definitely for business or friends gathering. more

YUMMY! 9/24/2002

The food at FRESH was truly excellent!!! You know something is right when everyody at the table made a hmmm sound when they took their first bite of food. Definitely order the fish stew for an apetizer....it was soooo flavorful!!! Although the Tuna entree was delicious, the two people at my table mentioned that they were disappointed in the portion size. I would say my only complaint was the wait we we experienced.....we had to wait 30 min for our table....we had a reservation yet we weren't seated at the slightly larger empty table. Not only did they make us wait they didn't even try to make amends. In nicer restaurants, the mgr would atleast buy a round of drinks or send over a couple of deserts.....they did NOTHING. So I highly recommend the food, but I think mgmt needs a little fine tuning. more

Dee-licious! 9/18/2002

I loved Fresh! I thought the food was fantastic, from salad to fish to dessert, the wine selection was lovely, the service (while a tad confused - the place is pretty new) was helpful and attentive, and the atmosphere was calm and soothing. I would recommend it highly and can't wait to go back again soon! My only hesitation is to tell too many people about it...it was half empty when I was there, and I really enjoyed the quiet. Pros: food, atmosphere more

Skip IT for Fall 9/17/2002

Do not waste your time. This restaurant serves bland food. The service is good and the place looks fresh but the food is certainly not. Whoever prepares the dishes should go back to culinary school and learn how to present a dish!! more

Don't walk - run - to FRESH. 9/14/2002

Recommend Fresh without hesitation to all foodies in town. Inventive menu, fish you'll not find elsewhere, all caught fresh that morning. The owner has been provisioning the best restaurants in NY (Chanterelle, Bouloud, Ducasse...) with fish for years - he has his own stall at the Fish Market. And now he's serving the day's catch himself, and pulls it off splendidly. The fried clams were heavenly. The rillette appetizer was smoky and smooth. My friend had the fish soup, and I the swordfish - also perfectly done. Portions for both courses were extremely generous. And the service? Even the bus boys smiled! The woman who waited on our table was unhurried, knowledgeable, and spent the time to explain the unusual menu offerings, like sea urchin. Also, they've done something to control the noise level in the open, clean space... it's quite quiet, even when crowded. Pros: Unusual fish menu, Perfect preparation, Smart friendly svc more

Exceltent Fish 9/9/2002

The Kobe Tuna was excellent. There were 6 of us and we all had wonderful dishes. Definitely worth going back! more

beautiful addition to the neighborhood 9/9/2002

I've been hearing a buzz about this place for some months and decided to check it out early this week. Despite the reviews i've read the service was impeccable. More than simple knowledge, this young looking staff delivers unobtrusive yet warm education to the lay. Chef Burge's menu sparkles with gems like Whole Roasted Flounder served with a ginger broth that exacts the nuttiness of this fine fish. Overly clued up music selections in a pulsingly beautifull decor are icing on the proverbial cake. Check it out soon before it's imposible to get into this one. more

I'll write the first review. 9/3/2002

After almost missing the front entrance on an otherwise quiet street, I walked into Fresh with somewhat high expectations. At first glance, it appeared to be another ""mature dining experience,"" but the loud, busy atmosphere was youthful and laid-back. The food, more importantly, was excellent. I had an appetizor consisting of halibut cheeks (halibut have cheeks?), a huge chunk of foi gras, spinach and a roasted peach. Right then I knew that this place means business. The service was friendly and even somewhat knowledgable. I'd definately go back. Pros: fresh fish more
