Free State- A must while in Lawrence 8/10/2009

The atmosphere of Free State Brewery is what makes it so special. It seems to represent the heart of the town. They utilize a number of farmers for the freshest ingredients. My favorite meal there is the avocado chimichurri, followed by the Brewhouse Chicken Salad. If you are in town, Free State is the place to feel the culture of Lawrence. Make sure to come early... they are fairly busy all of the time! more

My favorite restaurant of all time. 11/25/2008

Freestate is by far my favorite restaurant. The food is amazing, the beer is amazing, and the service too, is amazing. Their wheatstate golden paired with the hot artichoke dip can't be beat. My personal favorite is their tuna sandwich. Yum! A MUST try! more

Great Service, Great food 11/21/2008

The servers here actually eat the food. The last time I went my server even knew what farm my side dish came from. The inside is pleasant, and the food is great. Even if you don't drink there are plenty of dishes you will love more

awesome beer 11/17/2008

They have a wide selection of beer, but you have to try their beer that they brew in-house, it's delicious! The food is also very good, average prices. It's nice to sit out on the patio in the spring time and enjoy the weather! more

Great Food 3/14/2008

If your a beer fan you will not be disappointed when you try one of their beers!! I love this place, their food is amazing and the service is great!!! more

For the money the hands-down best restaurant in Lawrence 6/21/2006

The beer is among the best you will find in the region (if not the country!). The food is both affordable and suprisingly good! It is true that the dining room can be loud (few sound absorbing surfaces), but not so bad as to deter you from bringing your whole family to a late lunch or early dinner (I would, however, advise you to try and beat the drinking crowd as the noise level increases substantially with their arrival!). Overall, Freestate is easily among my top three fav restaurants in Lawrence (for point of reference: I have eaten at nearly every restaurant in town). And don't forget the Monday drink special! Two varieties of their microbrews go on special each Monday for less than two Washingtons per pint!!! ~8D Pros: Great food & Amazing Beer, all while still managing to be suprisingly affordable! Cons: Can be loud and crowded after dinner time (esp. on Monday!) more

Good beer, not much else. 1/5/2006

I read the previous reviews before posting this one. I should have realized when people are boasting about a ""cheesy pasta dish"" a.k.a. macaroni and cheese and ""fish and chips"" fried fish parts, I should not have expected much. The beer is exceptional but the food is a notch above Applebee's in quality. Bartenders attitudes were bad. I don't know why they acted so snobby, your a bartender in Kansas, lose the attitude. Pros: beer, decor, location Cons: food, bartenders, weird clientel more

A Mass Street Institution 6/4/2005

Free State is a great place to go with your buddies for a beer or a casual meal. The main dining room is loud and can get crowded at peak hours - expect a wait on weekends. Probably best known for their microbrews, although the food is very good, too. Pros: microbrews Cons: loud more

Primo Pasta 10/27/2004

I came here for the beer, but I've gotta go back for the pasta. They serve up a homemade penne with wild mushrooms in a cheesy sauce that is about as good as food can get. The beer is good too, and it is really filling, so make sure you leave room for some noodles or fresh bread. The room is loud, but the crowd is nice, you can always make a friend if you didn't come with one. Pros: Pasta, Beer, More Beer more

Music 5/24/2004

We liked both food and beer. The problem is that the music was a little bit too loud. It´s not a great place to have a meal with your family, for example. Pros: Food more

The Kind Brewery 2/19/2003

Free State is exceptional... everything about it is fantastic! The food is wonderful, especially the fish and chips. Try a nice Ad Astra or Oatmeal Stout during, or to finish off your dinner! The brews are of great quality and great selection. Pros: Food, Beer, Scenery Cons: More beer specials! more

  • Free State Brewing opened in 1989 as the first legal brewery in Kansas in more than 100 years. Located in a renovated inter-urban trolly station in historic downtown Lawrence, Kan., the brewery was an early participant in the rejuvenation of the north end of the downtown business district. Led by the renovation and refurbishment of neighboring Liberty Hall and the Eldridge Hotel, the result has been a rebirth of the 600 block of Massachusetts St. Its beers include Grace O'Malley's Irish Ale, Smoky Hill Ale, Ironman Imperial Stout, Coeur de Saison, Wheat State Golden, Ad Astra Ale, Copperhead Pale Ale and Oatmeal Stout. It also features a menu that consists of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts.
