You can hardly miss Fishtails Cafe as you approach the Newport Aquarium. Located at 3101 SE Ferry Slip Rd in Newport, the restaurant is about 2 1/4 hours from Eugene and about 2 3/4 hours from Portland. It's a perfect spot for a filling vacation breakfast. Fishtails is a family operation, and most days everyone is very happily working together.
The restaurant has recently expanded. The mismatched tables, chairs, cloth napkins and coffee mugs will either charm or annoy. Relax and enjoy -- the service is usually prompt, and the food is well worth waiting for (if you are faced with a line.)
Breakfast specialty is their super fat pile of marionberry-topped, stuffed french toast. Or choose pumpkin pancakes, biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon or sausage -- all the usual suspects are on the menu. Omelets are fantastic -- the Northwest with pesto, ham, veggies and sour cream is a personal favorite. Most of the breads are handmade and baked in the cafe, so don't miss a thick slice of fresh wheat toast! And they serve either hashbrowns (shredded) or home fries (hunks of fried potato), so everyone will be happy.
Lunch is also available, and the last time we stopped by they've added dinner on some nights! Special baked goods (like pie) could round out your meal, if you still have an empty place after chowing down.
And, in case you wonder who eats here -- a lot of locals, plus coastal vacationers. Local law enforcement often seems to have a group meeting going on over coffee when we stop by.
