Editorial review from Citysearch 1/17/2014

Just this week and for the last 35 years we have taken our four schnauzers to this clinic and they have always been not so friendly at front desk, not people friendly but the vets have always been wonderful. We have had four schnauzers 3 of which we had to put to sleep. The vet doing this was the most caring and felt our pain. But I will have to say the owner Dr. Meadows whom I met for the first time this week, needs to learn people skills as a business man. He is probably a wonderful vet but takes the attitude that if you don't like the way I do things go someplace else. I would think after a customer patronizes your business for as long as we have, and maybe minor complaint we looked over, with legitimate complaint you would be overly friendly and know how to handle a customer that is very unhappy. His way of handling it is go some place else....That is arrogant. This is what happened:\r We called about having Daisy groomed took her in at 9:00 am they said she will be ready at 5:00. My wife said we had an appointment at 5:00, well you can pick her up after your appointment. I did not know of this arrangement and when I got home at 4:00 I asked my wife to call to see if we could pick up since Daisy had been there all day. She called and they said they had not gotten to her yet, she will be ready at maybe 5:30. I called the clinic myself to find out whats going on since Daisy had been there for 8 Hours. I got the rude response from the front desk as described in some of these comments, so I asked for the owner Dr. Meadows. He came to the phone with a sounding arrogant attitude and told me the arrangements for Daisy and that's the way it is. I asked why you would have a plan to bring a dog in for grooming and keep for 8 hours before getting to it. I asked if we brought her in at 9:00 you mean you have already taken in a whole days worth before we came? I told him that was not a good schedule planning and most places and friends that groom dogs elsewhere its 2 to 3 hours at most. He said if you want the pet earlier come earlier, he said she would be ready as agreed. I went there at a little before 5:00 and they were working on her. He came out to tell me personally and didn't offer and kind comments or anything but ""we will get her records printed for you and you can take your pet elsewhere."" That's what they taught him in Vet school I guess. I told him that was fine. They brought me Daisy and he said he would comp the charges and we are finished. I'm sure when someone starting a practice has a much different attitude, but I think Dr. Meadows thinks he has plenty of business that losing one doesn't matter. Our family and extended family, and my customers over the years in Charlotte are over one million, face book, twitter, internet and I have a grandson that has over 5 million followers on internet and has had write ups in Observer many times and been on national TV several times. So I guess the word could get out good or bad. I would like to end in saying that the vets we have dealt with at Matthews Animal Clinic including Dr. Meadows have been wonderful with the pets, but in business and customer relations Dr. Meadows is terrible and arrogant. more

Lose Files, Horrible Customer Service 8/20/2011

I took my new puppies here because it was close and city search had good recommendations (although I see 2 of the negative ones have been taken off since I initially researched). All negative comments I have seen have been regarding the way they treat their clients - this is in support of that. There are certain front desk people who are plain rude and talk down to you. One example is when my puppy got neutered. He was very excited when I came to pick him up but was not supposed to be playful because of his surgery. Instead of reminding me to calm him down, the woman at the desk scolded him rudely and gave me an offhand comment about ?he?ll be in soon?. Implying he was going to hurt himself. One of the owners Dr. Walker Meadows is simply a jerk. The office lost files from our dog?s shot records. They denied losing the files. When I pointed out the file was for a shot required to board a dog and that they had boarded mine less than a month ago, they wouldn?t answer. They later changed their story a third time saying they had it and lost it but it wasn?t their responsibility since it was from separate vet. As we were out of town, when an emergency arose and the dogs needed to be boarded, we had no choice but to have another vet give the shot and pay for the shot and office visit. I found this very unprofessional. Why did they ask for and try to keep important medical files if they were later comfortable losing them? What if an emergency arose and, because the vet lost files, something was done that should not have been done? When I arrived back in town, I produced the original shot file they were given and had lost. I pointed this out to an office person. She said what do you want me to do about it. I requested they not lose my files from now on and waive our next general office visit fee to cover the cost of having to have the shot redone elsewhere. I was told no rudely. I replied I would be taking my puppies elsewhere as unprofessionalism, lost files and horrible customer service were not great selling points for me. A couple weeks later, I received a call from Dr. Walker Meadows out of the blue saying I had asked for him to call. I replied I had not. When I tried to hang up he said ?wait, what about the shot?. I said I had discussed it with his office, did not feel comfortable with the situation and was changing vets. He then accused me of blackmail. I asked him why. He said you wanted us to pay for the shot. I said no, I wanted you to not lose my dogs files and I asked if I were to stay if you would not pay for the shot, as you are saying, but waive my next office visit fee to your clinic for your mistake (I had never asked for this before, as he claims, but his wife had done it on her own initiative on another mistake the office made, so I did not find it to be an absurd request). None the less, he continued the rudeness I had become familiar with in his office. My advice ? don?t go here. You?re pets and your more

In response to user dtronner 6/22/2011

Mr Dusty Heist has contacted our clinic several times over an issue concerning his previous veterinarian. While trying to board his animals out of town the facility required proof of a vaccination. Mr Dusty Heist called us to have us verify the shot was given. We did not give this shot to his pet, nor did we have proof that it was given from a previous vet. We suggested he should receive this vaccine for his animals safety. Mr Dusty Heist had to get the shot at the facility in order to board there. Mr Dusty Heist is upset with us for not having a complete copy of records from his previous veterinarian. Mr Heist demanded that we reimburse him for the shot that was given and demanded we give him free services in the future or else he said he would find a new veterinarian and write a poor internet review. Mr Dusty Heist has demanded free services from us in the past. I told him that is not how we conduct business and that he should find a new veterinarian. I hope he finds some one who can better deal with his personality, although his pets were very nice. Side note, Citysearch would not allow for a review without stars, so...... i gave us 5 more

Great Vets 5/25/2011

Dr Fisher has seen my animal family for a few years now. I have always appreciated her bedside manor and gentle approach to handling my cats. I just think she is a great veterinarian!!! more

Excellent All Around Clinic!! 9/14/2010

There is an animal clinic about two minutes from my house, but I would rather drive the 20 miles to Matthews Animal Clinic because I know that I am going to get the best care for my pets. When my cat became extremely ill, I took him there and was pretty sure he was going to need to be put to sleep. Instead the doctors were very compassionate and promised they would do all they could. I received a phone call every day from a doctor explaining my cat's treatment and how he was feeling as well as I was able to visit as many times as I wished. All the veterinarians are excellent there however I have to mention Dr. Mary Getz, Dr. Cecily Thompson, Dr. Ann Meadows, and Dr. Walker Meadows because they all helped in my cat's case. After a four day stay I was able to bring my cat home and after a little bit of treatment at home, Orson was back to himself! This was two years ago! I also bring our Cocker Spaniel to Matthews Animal Clinic to be groomed. The groomers are excellent and very friendly! Maggie is always treated as if she is at a salon! I would definitely recommend Matthews Animal Clinic!!!! more

Wonderful Experience 9/13/2010

Being fairly new to the area, my wife and I were unsure where to take our Beagel Marley, when a neighbor recommended Matthews Animal Clinic. We found the staff to be friendly and professional. Dr. Meadows was very knowlegable when it came to dealing with Marley's chronic allergies. When we left we felt that we had found a Vet that we both liked and trusted. more

GREAT Service and friendly people that Care 9/13/2010

I have used the services of the fine doctors at Matthews animal clinic on multiple occassions while travelling through the Charlotte area. The doctors and staff exemplify professionalism. I have boarded my pet, had surgery performed ( DVM Meadows is a very talented surgeon), and had difficult questions answered regarding my pet's health. I could not give a more glowing recommendation. They are personable, friendly, and above all understanding of the relationship between pet and family. Thank you Matthews Animal Clinic for all of your loving work over the years! more

i drive across town to go to these guys.... 9/12/2010

After several less than satisfactory experiences w/ a couple of local vets and specialty hospital, i was referred to matthews animal clinic by a good friend who is also one of my medical partners and i've never regretted following that advice. The docs are all exceptional clinicians and, from significant personal experience, also talented surgeons. I've run the gamut with my own dogs anywhere from the successful treatment of severe heartworm disease, bloat with gastric torsion, and the chronic management of mast cell tumors, to swallowing a gun cleaning rag. Other friends i've referred in have also been extremely happy with the treament they've received for abdominal surgery, anterior cruciate reconstruction in a particularly complex clinical setting, cancer, simple spaying and neutering, new puppy checks and urologic problems. But it's not just the doc's clinical skills that keep me coming back to Matthews animal. They've been wonderful in working with me around my crazy schedule and hours. The desk personnel are always pleasant, courteous and helpful and the techs are simply wonderful. they always remember my dogs and know each of their quirks. I have absolutely NO reservations in giving these guys your highest rating and will continue to refer all of my friends there even if it means, as it does for me, a significant ride across charlotte. keep up the good work guys! more

The Best 9/10/2010

My family has been coming to matthews animal clinic ever since I was a small child. We have seen all the vets for everything form shots to epilepsy. I now am having my first child. I was worried about my cat causing problems with my pregnancy as described by my OB. She said I need to get rid of my cat immediately due to possible birth defects from cleaning the cat box. Dr Meadows told me that that was not necessary. He took a blood sample to test for toxoplasmosis and nothing was found. He gave me instructions on how to be precautious, and he even called my OB to explain to them how to handle these situations. Matthews animal clinic is the best!! more

NOT IMPRESSED 8/17/2010

I took my 2 yr old golden retriever to Matthews Animal Clinic to utilize their grooming services. They came highly recommended from my aunt, who has been a client of their's for years. I made an appt and on the day of the appt, I arrived to a full reception area - owners and their pets waiting to check in. The lady behind the desk did not acknowledge anyone until it was their turn in line and she was extremely unfriendly! A simple, ""Good morning, I'll be with you in just a moment"" would have been sufficient - but nothing. When it was my ""turn"" to check in, she simply took my info and had someone take my dog back. I got a call no more than 15 mins after I left that she didn't have my dog's vaccination records (from another vet). I had brought them with me and she either neglected to make copies or misplaced the copies. So I had to call our regular vet to get them faxed to Matthews before they'd groom my dog. The groomer did a wonderful job on him! At pick up, I'd forgotten my debit card, so they took the # over the phone from my husband which was a HUGE help! That semi-redeemed them for the crappy service in the morning. But since there are plently of decent groomers and vets in the area and all charge roughly the same prices - if someone isn't going to appreciate my business, I'm taking it to someone who does. Enter Cotswold Animal Hospital - I've never met such friendly, animal loving people in my life. They appreciate everyone who walks in the door!! more

Horrible 9/3/2009

We relocated here a year ago and have been going to the Matthews Animal Clinic over the past year because they are close to us. \r \r I admit I was spoiled from my previous vet because they are extremely high tech as well as a 24/7 animal hospital and have so much more knowledge than Matthews Animal Clinic.\r \r This place in my opinion is not worth it. Dr. Ann Meadows is very nice but her husband was completely rude to me on the phone. \r \r We are moving long distance due to the economy and first of all they cannot find out what is wrong with my one cat who has been having an on-going sinus and breathnig type issue for 6 weeks now and they just keep telling me to pump him full of antibiotics. Then I asked about using an anti-anxiety medication for my cat because he gets very upset in the car. I wanted to make it as stress-free as possible for him. The vet back north did not recommend using one when we moved down here because then the animal is not in control of their body and it can have an adverse reaction she said. \r \r So, Matthews Animal Clinic gave me something called Acepromazine and told me to test it out at home first. They told me to give him 1/4 tablet. Well, that did not seem to have a big effect on him and when trying to place him in his carrier for the test drive he completely freaked out which he usually does not do while still inside out home so I called Matthews Animal Clinic and they told me to give him another 1/4 tablet. This was a HUGE mistake. My cat could not even walk after this second dose. I was in tears. To make a long story short it definitely had an adverse reaction on my cat.\r \r I called Matthews Animal Hospital again because I was worried about my cat and the second dosage. I was told that Dr. Ann Meadows was off today but that they would have another vet call me back which took 3 hours. The vet receptionist who answered the phone proceeded to tell me that I should try using a pillow case for my cat while traveling in the car. At first I thought she was joking. Well, she was not. She said put him in a pillow case and tie it up. I was so dumbfounded by this. I seriously could not believe she was telling me to put my cat that is already nervous in a pillow case for an 8 hour drive. THEY ARE INSANE! Then, Dr. Walker Meadows called me back and was very rude to me on the phone. He was not even listening to me as I could hear him typing on the computer the whole time. I went through the whole story and he said ""I'm sorry do you have a question about the medication or is this just about the pillow incident?"" LOL! I was like are you kidding me?\r \r This place is so backwoods. I feel like I am living back in the 19th century or something. I am so disappointed in this place and do not recommend it if you value your pets safety and life. Pros: Close By Cons: Read the Details more

Caring Staff, Willing to work with owners...A+ service 5/24/2007

Dr Mary Getz and Dr Ann Meadows have been wonderful in working with all of my dogs, especially Parsifal. \r \r He had a serious chronic condition and they took the time to work with me to tailor a treatment plan for him. We discussed options for his treatment, planned for long term options if/when his condition worsened.\r \r We were on this plan for a year before the condition worsened and the Doctors at Matthews helped me get Parsifal in to see a specialist at the Uof Gerogia Vet School. Pros: Wonderful caring practice, willing to work with owners Cons: Saturdays are walk in (no appointments) so can be slow/crowded more

knowledgeable Vets and willing to work with you 12/8/2006

The veternarians are very knowledgeable and wiling to work with you on treatment plans. I have 1 dog with a chylothorax. The vets have been very wiling to work with me on a treatment plan and got outside opinions from sources (NCSU and Carolina Vet Spec as well as the top Chylo specialist vet in Texas) to assist in the treatment.\r \r Also, their prices are reasonable...not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. Pros: Knowledgeable, friendly and wiling to work with you Cons: Saturday's are 1st come,1st serve (wish they did appointments Sat) more
