Physical and emotional abuse 8/17/2011

My mother is beginning chemotherapy for breast cancer this week, during which she will lose her hair. We were searching for a wig, and ended up visiting Empire Wigs. When we walked in, the lights were off, there were no staff people in sight, and we couldn't really tell if the store was open or not. Eventually, a man--I assume the owner of the shop--came out of the back, and turned on half of the lights in the store. We began looking through the wigs, and my mom found one that she wanted to try on. She asked for a head covering for sanitation purposes (we've used them at every other wig store in the state), and he told her it would be $2 to use one. She asked if she could try it on without, and he just waved his arm at her. After she tried on one wig, she found one she liked better--it was bright red. My mom wants a fun wig to get her through this difficult time, so she tried it on. He snorted like he was making fun of her, and told her she should go to the party store. I made sure he knew she had cancer, and asked if he had any more wigs in bright colors since that one didn't really fit her. The owner then told us that she wasn't allowed to try on any more wigs, and we should leave the store. I calmly told him that the way he was treating our family wasn't a really great way of retaining customers, and he yelled 'get out!' to me, my two younger sisters, and my mother. He grabbed me by the arm and shoved my 13-year old sister to throw us out--literally. I told him not to touch either of us, and he continued to attempt to shove the family out the door. When we left, shocked at the way we had been treated, he locked the door behind us and turned off the lights again. I have never experienced such an unbelievable display of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of a store employee/owner. Mocking my mother the day before she begins chemo...shoving and grabbing young women to force them out of a store...we were just shocked and appalled at being treated this way. more

Extremely rude, dingy store and products. 1/8/2010

I visited this store looking for my first wig which I need for medical hair loss. When I went in an older man, who was the only person in the store, asked if he could help me. I asked about a specific wig that I'd seen online. He said that he didn't have it and I said I'd just look around. The store is one big room with wigs on heads and the boxes in other colors behind them on shelves. Most of the wigs on display were cheap, obvious-looking wigs - very few monofilaments on display. I looked around for the two brands that I was interested in which they had in boxes but not on display heads. I picked up a box to open (just to see the color, not to touch) but he said very rudely, suddenly standing behind me, "You can't touch that! Everything is out." He then walked off to a back room. The boxes were all dingy and very old looking except for, oddly, the two brands that I wanted to look at that were not on display heads. I found the color rings for those brands which were on obvious display, I thought for customers to look at. I wanted to find a color and then ask him to show me wigs in that brand in that color. he came out and said, "You need to go someplace else. We sell wigs here." I said, "That's what I'm looking for." He replied, "You come in here and look in the boxes, we sell wigs here, you go someplace else." I said, "I was looking at the color sample rings. How can I know what color I need if I don't look at them?" He said, "You don't even know what color you want. You need professional help, we sell wigs here. You go someplace else." To which I said, "It's difficult enough to need to wear a wig and I can't believe that you're being so rude to a customer." I was very polite and soft-spoken to this man and was feeling pretty fragile because of my medical diagnosis and I can't imagine that he even picked up on that. Worst possible customer service. I don't recommend to anyone especially medical customers. No help, no compassion, just rudeness. And I was asked to leave as if I were a criminal or outcast. more

Very Rude to Customers 5/8/2009

I went here with my mom, looking for a wig. When we arrived, it appeared empty, as if there was nobody working there. We went into the back room, found a man sitting there, and asked him for some help. At this point, a woman who worked there came out of the back room, and coldly walked by us without saying a word. The man got a couple wigs down, and my mom tried them on. I also wanted to look at some wigs for myself, and the man said, "I thought she was the one looking for a wig, not you." I politely told him that I was also interested in a wig. I started to look at wigs and the man screamed at me "WHICH ONE IS IT, you can't try on all of these wigs of different colors!" (Keep in mind that I only had 2 wigs, the same number that my mom had tried on). I told him that I hadn't decided on a color yet, and wanted to see how they looked on me. Suddenly he said, "No, we're closing now." I said, "I thought you were open until 6, are you?" (The clock said 5:10). He said "yes we are, but you have to go now." Umm, excuse me? My mom was very close to buying a $350 wig from him, but needless to say, he lost our business. I just don't understand the point of being rude to potential customers (especially when he almost had a sale!) I've never written a negative review for anybody before, but this place was just asking for it. more

Good Retail Natural-Looking Wigs Store 4/18/2006

I went to this store with my mom, who was looking for a wig for fun. This branch of Empire Wigs is located in a shopping strip so parking is ample. The store is not very big but it's filled with wigs and more wigs. The quality of the wigs seem to be much more natural-looking than the wigs I've seen in other beauty supply stores, which looked too shiny and plastic-y. There was only one man tending the store and he was very warm and helpful. He got the many wigs that my mom wanted to try on was very patient and willing to help us when we had questions to ask. The place has a big mirror with 3 seats where people can try on wigs in the front part of the store and a smaller mirror and seat in the back, also. We went there really just to look around but because of the quality of the wigs and the great customer care we received, my mom bought a wig right then! The place is not cheap: most wigs my mom tried on were in the $125 to $135 range, but they do carry some that are under $100, cheapest one I heard was $35. more
