Best

I live on potrero hill, but I don't go here for its convenience. I go to Eliza's for the food! Even when you order takeout it is ready within 20 minutes! And for those of you t...

Worst

Food is good but in this town there is good food everywhere. The service is weak at best and given they charge 40% more than everyone else this place should be done. If they did...

The Worst From Top to Bottom 5/2/2003

I've often read bad reviews of restaurant on here and thought that maybe the place wasn't THAT bad, until I visited Eliza's. I had the unfortunate experience of dining at their California St. location. We were thrown a tacky wine list that had the selections crossed out and re-written in. It seemed to have grocery store selections at 5 times the normal mark-up. The wait staff was rude and slow, the food was not as good as everybody had led me to believe. I'd rather stay home and order take out from the place around the corner than revisit here. Overall the place was overpriced, lacked good service or management, and I wouldn't be sad to see this place shut it doors! Pros: location, no wait for a table, funky decor Cons: horrible wine list, rude staffing, overpriced more

No Comparison 12/30/2002

Want a refreshing change from the clear mystery sauce that holds together most Chinese entrees? Try Eliza's and you'll never go back....their entrees are fresh, coloful and incredibly tasty. The seabass (not Chilean) is my favorite. Only downfall i can think of - no delivery! Pros: Clean, Bright Cheerful Decor, Fast Service Cons: No delivery more

Edgy/elegant, Affordable/chic 12/9/2002

Eliza's decor is immediately striking and tasteful, with brilliant colors and abstract shapes, but entirely comfortable. This visual exuberance is offset by the crisp white-shirt-and-blue-jeans clad waitstaff, just as the rustic Chinese fare is complimented by its presentation on beautiful chinaware. Try the Eliza's cakes appetizer - the best onion pancake I have ever had. And I recommend the mango beef or chicken, and the sesame chicken. The dynamic combination of edgy and elegant, affordable but chic is precisely what makes Eliza's so nice for a special occasion; affordable enough for everyday eating. Pros: inexpensive, good value, good, friendly servic Cons: parking difficult more

Fancy Presentation of Mediocre Food 12/3/2002

Eliza's serves expensive, mediocre American-style ""Chinese food."" If you want somewhat expensive, small helpings of sweetened, stir-fried dishes with fancy presentations, then come here. If you like Chinese food, stay away. Pros: Fancy decor, Fancy presentation Cons: Bad food more

Mediocre, Americanized Chinese Food 11/6/2002

If your idea of Chinese food is sweet and sour pork and egg foo yung, come on down to Eliza's. They disguise their dishes as haute cuisine, but when it comes down to it, they're serving standard fare, sweetened for an American palate. If you want well-made American-style Chinese, go to House of Nanking. If you want true Chinese, go to Ton Kiang or Hong Kong Flower Lounge (in Millbrae). This place is as bad as Shanghai 1930. Pros: Fancy, Upscale Cons: Unoriginal, Overpriced, Uninteresting more

Gem in Potrero Hill 11/1/2002

Great food hidden in Potrero Hill. Great service and atmosphere, but prices are a bit on the expensive side. Overall, the place is fantastic though and I would recommend this place to anyone. Pros: great food, prompt service Cons: parking more

The best alternative Chinese restaurant 10/21/2002

What seperates this chinese restaurant from the rest? First start off with the art in the restaurant. It's very colorful; There are lots of glass blown art that hangs from the ceiling. Secondly how many chinese restaurants in Chinatown or the Richmond use portabello mushrooms in the dishes? Eliza's does it wonderfully. The food is unmistakeningly excellent. Out of town visitors ( and E Bay and peninsula ) always want more and are amazed. What else? Look at the artful presentation of the food. Pros: food, neighborhood, secret more

Great all around 10/3/2002

Great food, not-greasy, in a great nieghborhood with polite, quick and clean staff. more

tasty...but 8/5/2002

The food was really good, and also pretty reasonably priced. The service however, was terrible. With all the people running around, it seems like they would have time to do more than throw the food down and leave. Pros: good food Cons: bad service more

terrible service 7/31/2002

Food is ok, although the portions are somewhat small. But the service is the worst I've ever experienced in the city (which is saying a lot). Not just indifferent but rude. Ruined the experience. Cons: bad service more

brown rice 7/19/2002

most people think chinese food is greasy - this will change your mind. delicious, healthy chinese food with top quality meat, chicken and fish, fresh veggies and you can even choose brown rice. definitely give it a try, the best chinese I've ever had. Pros: inexpensive, healthy, fresh Cons: delicious, innovative more

Good Chinese 7/19/2002

I am not a big fan of greasy Chinese food but this one is everything the other are not. Must try the ostrich and mango. I would recommend take-out, the atmosphere like other chinese restaurants has too much light. Pros: not greasy, quality Cons: no parking, no atmosphere, no delivery more

Lovely low-key place, Great food 7/12/2002

We stumbled into Eliza's a couple of months ago and it has become a weekly stop for us, especially on weekdays. The food, service, and presentation are always good. I've never felt rushed to leave, but I've never been there at 8pm on a Saturday with people standing in line either. The food is always delicious and correctly prepared. I especially like the Peking Duck (weekends only) and we love the potstickers. They have a very good French Orangeade you should try. Crab Rangoon was not so good. We often get the Lemon Prawns, and the Sesame Chicken. I think it is a bit neighborhoody--staff has really warmed up to us based on our emerging status as regulars. Pros: Imaginative menu, Lovely simple decor, Good food Cons: Small more

10 5/22/2002

The BEST mushu pork I have ever had! Everything else was absolutley fresh and flavorful and just great! It was very busy, which made the service just a little slow, but the servers were friendly and attentive. The artwork is beautiful, colorful glass in many shapes and forms are everywhere you look. Simply fabulous, I have been reccommending it to everyone! Pros: fabulous fresh food, comfortable seating, great art to look at Cons: a little too busy more
