I feel fortunate enough to have a few friends who have raved about Sungari's DragonWell well before the redesign and menu expansion. For years a handful of my ""foodie"" friends c...

If you want Chinese food don't bother paying their prices, go somewhere else. The food was not that good for the price or service. The building is very nice, and reminded me of Bo...

Outstanding 11/3/2004

Best Chinese food in Portland. Highly recommend the seseme beef and scallops in tangy sauce, and all other dishes are outstanding. If you want some very good tea, try the monkey-picked Ti Kwan Yin. Pros: Outstanding food more

Wonderful DUCK 6/1/2003

Walked in on the 14th of Febuary, late after having reservations and they were very kind and seated us immediatly. It wasn't hard to find either, (we were just dumb). But we ordered our food in a easy way, and got our regular tea, the DUCK was soo good, and so was the shrimp! I liked the little flowers on the tables in the water, that added a special touch, the lighting was just right and the place wasn't noisy. A nice atmosphere that makes you feel comfertable. Pros: price, food, atmosphere Cons: parking more

what never was and nwever will be 1/25/2003

Sungari a five star Chinese restaraunt? you have got to be kidding. All the 10 ratings are from themselves! Overpriced WAAAYYY overpriced food with no appeal. Don't waste your hard earned money on food that can be optained at half the price. Good luck, you will be dissappointed. more

Not even close 1/22/2003

Only one way to describe this: Total Rip-Off! $12 drinks that didn't even measure a full shot? Food was great (by the way), but I was not prepared to pay $38+ per person for a meal I could have had most places for $24. There's no food worth the bitter taste this left in my mouth. We were the only ones in the restaurant, so it's no wonder they tried to milk us for all they had. Too bad, because if they lowered their prices and got a clue, this place could really be something special. Pros: good food, servers tried, good tea Cons: PRICE, expensive, drinks more

Chinese Mall food meet your match 12/27/2002

Panda Express with an attitude and high price tag. This is the echelon of Portland Chinese food? I love the review about the ""sample guy."" The food is not terrible, just waaaayyyyy overpriced and un-original. Yes, save your money. Pros: price, vanilla food more

lunch with the lawyer 11/26/2002

Shiek, trendy, black suites, expensive dresses drenched in ginger, garlic and oil. Paper table clothes drape the sparsely decorated table. No soysauce, salt or pepper, just a tiny vase with two colorful flowers. The food was proportioned well for lunch, and the hot and sour soup was magnificent (a true test of an chineese restaurant). more

Sungari is Sunsational 11/14/2002

The prices are higher then most Chinese/Szechwan restaurants, however, Sungari offers amazing food. The hot and sour soup is to die for, the SESAME BEEF is unbelievable and if you care to go all out, treat yourself to ""The Dragon and The Phoenix"" a succulent combination of lobster (generous portion) in a savory red sauce (not the typical sticky sweet red sauce) and delicately coated General Tso's chicken in brown sauce. The scallop appetizer is also wonderful. I am a big fan of take out for dinner as the atmosphere is a bit stark for my taste. When I have eaten in the restaurant I found the wait staff to be prompt, courteous and unobtrusive. Pros: food preparation, knowledgable staff Cons: price, atmosphere more

Lunch 11/14/2002

I have eaten here many times and the food is always hot, plentiful and served very quickly. Since I have only dined here during lunch time, I cannot say if the price is right for dinner. But it IS right for lunch. I recommend the Hot and Sour soup. It alone is worth the trip to Sungari. The staff is always prompt, polite and very professional. The atmosphere is clean, trendy and smoke-free. At $8-10 a plate, this is a great place to splurge for lunch. Pros: Friendly, Clean, Professional more

Fresh Off The Boat? NOT! 11/10/2002

Authentic 5 star Chinese cuisine? Give me a break, maybe 5 stars in a shopping mall food stand. The food at Sungari is expensive, unoriginal, and portioned like French cuisine. Giant plates with a bit of food to color the middle of it. Save some time and money and dine elsewhere folks. If your looking for Sungari style of Chinese the ""sample"" yelling guy at Pioneer place food court can provide that at 1/8th the price. What a sham. more

we love it! 11/7/2002

the atmosphere is such a nice change from the usual pink & red motifes in chinese restaurants. the food is very good too. a bit on the expensive side, but we love to go there for special occassions. more

Chop Suey FOOEY! 10/30/2002

Remember the cheap take out chinese for $4 to $5 dollars? Sungari's serves the same thing for 3 times the price. Way overpriced chop suey. Sungari's menu prices are justified by their monthly rent which is higher then their food standards. Service was down right horrible. If you like Panda Express, save yourself some money and eat there because Sungari's is the same thing. more

overpriced chung king 10/25/2002

Sungari's upscale atmosphere is no excuse for the poor food and service. I remember better tasting chinese food from the canned ""chung king"" grocery food. What a attitude we recieved from the staff. I guess we did not meet their required ""look"" for thier establishment. We decided on this place based on web reviews but I guess the people that rated this place so highly never has had good Chinese food. What a disgrace to Chinese cooking. Don't waste your money on high priced very mediocre food. Cons: over priced, unfriendly, bad food more

Nose in the air! 10/17/2002

What pompous attitudes we discovered at Sungari's. The food is WAY overpriced and is very average compared to other chinese downtown. We felt rushed to finish by the wait staff. Nice decor may be attractive but attitude and average food makes sungari another joe blow wanna be chinese restaraunt. The manager needs a attitude adjustment. Nothing special at Sungari. Pros: Nice decor Cons: Overpriced, Poor customer service, Manager is stuffy more

Amazing! 7/16/2002

My fiance and I moved to Portland from the San Francisco Bay Area, and spent the better part of the year trying to find a decent Chinese restaurant to replace our old favorite. After many disappointing meals, we finally discovered Sungari. We love the pot stickers and wontons in Szechuan chili sauce, and the Spicy Sesame Beef is to die for. We also value the consistency in service and preparation we get at Sungari. We may end up paying a bit more, but it's well worth it. more

Food no where near authentic 6/29/2002

Sure, the decor is more on the upscale side than most Chinese restaurants. However, the dishes I had (Ta Ta Noodle, Ma Po Tofu) by no means looked/tasted like what I had in Taiwan, despite having the same names. Regardless of authenticity, the food was not inspiring at all. The service was lacking, too. I'm totally surprised that it got voted the best Chinese restaurant in Portland. For better food and value, I recommend ""Mandarin Cove"". more

Average/ Ordinary 6/25/2002

Americanized Chinese food. Waiter talked us out of ordering what we wanted, and what we got was nothing special. In fact, one dish what waiter raved about that we did order, came out w/ totally different ingredients than we were told. I grew up on San Franciscan Chinese food and can't seem to find anything quite as tasty. Won't be back here. more

Good PDX Chinese 6/25/2002

It's all relative: for Portland, this is above average Chinese. On its own merit, it overpriced average fare. They can't pull off the high priced authentic mix. Go to one of those Chinese fast food outlets in your neighborhood grocery store and save some serious bucks. Great decor though, and the hostess was very friendly. Pros: hostess Cons: price, server more

Best in town 5/15/2002

Portland seriously lacks good Chinese food, so Sungari really stands out. The food is very fresh and flavorful. The eggplant dish is like candy (try it, even if you don't think you like eggplant). Honey-walnut shrimp is outstanding, crispy scallops melt in your mouth, and many dishes are truly spicy, like Szechwan cooking should be. Beautiful interior, too. It's more expensive than most Chinese restaurants, but well worth it. more
