Best

My favorite place to eat period! I'm there 2x per week and love it! Get anything on the menu and you'll be happy!

Worst

No bad, but far from the best BBQ in Los Angeles. I can't understand why such a high rating. The Bear Pit up the street is vastly better.

Editorial review from Citysearch 1/24/2014

Probably the best BBQ in Los Angeles and I've eaten a lot of BBQ. Get yourself a stack of ribs, a bib, and dig in. Worth the wait if there's a line. Good parking in back. more

Something Good Done Gone Wrong 8/9/2011

I used to go to Hogly Wogly many times...in the 90's...when it still turned out good BBQ. Something happened during the last decade. After several visits all turned out the same: Dried up chicken, dried up ribs, etc., etc., I stopped going. I never thought I would say a chain BBQ is better, but, out where I live, I will take the tri-tip and ribs at Wood Ranch BBQ any day over what Hogly Wogly has been serving up over the last 10 years or so. What the heck happened? more

Not what it used to be 7/8/2010

I have been going to this establishment for over 30 years. In recent years, I am disappointed time and time again by over-chewy, overcooked ribs, ofen mixed in with thoise correctly done. My sense is that thete is no manager on premises monitoring the cooking process.\r \r If that situation was corrected, Hogly Wogly could return to being one of the best rib joints in the city. Pros: Tasty sauce Cons: Often overcooked - oven needs attention! more

Since when is BBQ cooked in an oven?! 11/14/2009

When my husband and I first moved from Texas to LA, we thought we try our luck on going to Doctor Hogly Wogly's on the claim of having Texas quality BBQ and from Tyler no less. We are from the Austin and College Station area and have had every kind of BBQ imaginable all across the state. Needless to say we were not impressed with the food at all. The meat tasted like it had been broiled in the oven and of course no sign of smokers anywhere, which is a must at any good BBQ joint. The Texas hospitality was there for sure. Our waitress was very nice, but did not overshadow the food. If you are from LA, you will probably like this place but if you are not it's a waste of time. People of LA this is NOT what BBQ is supposed to taste like. Just a friendly FYI. Pros: Very nice staff Cons: BBQ tastes like it has been broiled in the oven. more

Pretty good BBQ 10/21/2009

My bf has been trying to get me to agree with Hogly Woglys for a while. We were running errands out in the SFV and he drove us out of the way to eat here. its saying a lot if he's driving out of the way to get some grub.\r \r I think i have pretty exacting standards for BBQ (despite being asian). My best friends dad BBQ's every three day holiday and Uncle Stevies BBQ is hands down the best.\r \r Hogly Woglys is a good stop gap when a 3day weekend isn't in sight. The portions are huge. We ate until we were stuffed and still had to take home the leftovers (which they pack up for you in a plastic bag)\r \r I can't say the sides wowed me, they were kinda unmemorable, but the BBQ was good. Love their sauce.\r \r This is not a date place. This is a get your hands dirty, bbq sauce on your face, elbows out, lick your fingers kinda place.\r \r Kudos to my bf for knowing good bbq. 1 minus point for considering it a date place. Pros: Huge Portions, good sauce. Cons: Not a Date Place more

One of the best BBQ joints in LA 9/10/2009

This is seriously one of the best BBQ spots in all of LA. Can't say much for the sides, but that's okay, the ribs, brisket and links more than make up for it. The employees here look like they were transplanted from Texas...I guess that's a good sign. :) Pros: Good portions, great tasting BBQ sauce Cons: Sides more

Best Kept Secret 6/20/2009

Has great BBQ food, its a homestyle restaurant with a small outdoor patio, you get large generous portions, very limited parking and limited seating inside. Its like a truck stop you might find out in the middle of nowhere. word of mouth has made this a very popular place. I enjoyed the food very much. The bbq beans are different than most places. The have a great BBQ sauce. Pros: Best bbq food, Cons: If you are looking for atmosphere, this is not it more

Texas sized portions and taste 5/27/2009

As soon as we arrived, we were made to feel like we were at home. The waitress was friendly and funny and she gave us the lowdown on the food. I read in other reviews that the portions were generous- but that is an understatement! When the plates arrived, they were stacked high with succulent chicken, ribs and brisket. The BBQ sauces were delicious and spicy, and the baked beans were the best I've had. Sure it wasn't cheap, but it was 3 meals worth on 1 plate. Highly recommended! Pros: friendly service, huge portions, great food Cons: uh.... lack of ambience I guess? more

Mmmoooooooooooo! 9/18/2008

Either you GET the ""Doctors"" or you DON'T. If you DO, you'll have a fabulous time here. Great food, love the waitstaff, the sauce and the outside bathrooms. If you DON'T, you'll write some of the hateful reviews you'll read here. Just because some drooling imbecile doesn't get it doesn't change how a great a place it is. So by all means GO - if you love reasonably Texas-style ""Q"", keep an open mind about the decor, which is not what you go for, and bring a dime (or ask your waitress for a token) so you can wash up afterward. And do come hungry, or plan to take leftovers. Oh - for those of you who don't get it, you'll LOVE Mr. Cecils - that's YOUR kind of place. Pros: The Gaahhhhlick!!! Cons: Sadly, I've acclimated to the hot bbq sauce so it doesn't hurt as much anymore... more

Best BBQ 9/16/2008

Hey above dude...go back to Texas...not all things are better in Texass......this place puts Your lonhorns to shame....GO USC National Champs 2008 more

Damn their brisket was tender!! The marinade was great!!!!!!!!!!1 6/10/2008

I recommend their brisket, sweet potato pie was great!,baked beans were good, bathroom is clean but outside. service was great, parking lot is small but was not packed. after we ordered they quickly brought out our sides, i liked that cause i was starving. the BBQ food is way better than The Bear Pit so far. Pros: brisket, sweet potato pie, baked beans Cons: bathroom is outside restaurant, won't give u their marinade recipe more

Grave disappointment 4/8/2008

The ribs were so tough they were almost impossible to chew. \r Sauce was good, sweet and spicy, sides adequate. \r Brisket was awsome!! Made my day. Pros: Service is outstanding! Cons: Sub par for ""Texas Style"" BBQ more

Just OK, not great 1/25/2008

Went for lunch, was not crowed. Had half-rack of spareribs. They were ok but not great. Sauce was good. A bit pricey, $21 for half of ribs (no sides) and coke with tip. more

Best BBQ in Los Angeles 1/19/2008

Let me start by saying that I was born and raised in Texas. While this BBQ is mediocre for Texas, it is the best I have had in Los Angeles. Don't listen to those saying that the brisket was dry. The brisket, ribs, and chicken were juicy and tender. The sausage was a glaring weakness and would not have sold in Texas. The sauce is very sweet and does not contain as much vinegar as what I am used to. The sides are definitely weak, except the cole slaw, which reminded me of home. The wait staff was nice and I'm sure that none was a starving actor, which I found quite refreshing. \r \r Is it as good as what you find in small towns across Texas? No. Is it the best in Los Angeles? Definitely. It is good enough to give me my BBQ fix and that is the most I can ask given the alternative of going home to get decent BBQ. more

Best BBQ in the Valley 1/17/2008

I have tried nearly every BBQ place in the valley and Dr. Hogly Wogly's is about the best. The food never disappoints. I always get the brisket which is tender and juicy, but has also heard that the hot links, the ham and the pork are also excellent. The BBQ beans are outstanding and some of the most interesting I have ever tasted. They're just like candy. All of the other sides are quite good as well. The service is prompt and friendly. The same group of waitresses has been there forever, and they know the menu inside and out. They make you feel right at home. The restaurant itself has no ambiance or charm whatsoever, but it is clean and well maintained. Pros: Great food, good service, fair prices Cons: Very limited parking, no ambiance more

Best bbq in town, great service. 9/16/2007

Best bar-b-que in town, sauce is delicious and the meat and nice and juicy. For a first time customer, I recommend getting the 3 way combo, you can get beef brisket, sausage link, and pork ribs. The beef brisket is to die for. Entrees come with bread and sides. DO NOT ORDER any salad from here, they don't serve it and save yourself the humiliation of being laughed at for ordering salad in a bbq place. Service is great, all the waitresses are very helpful and friendly. Price is reasonable. Pros: Great bbq, great service Cons: a little too cozy more

Best Ribs in California 8/8/2007

That is all I can say, this place has the Best Ribs in California. Stop reading and just go eat there. The drive to the valley is worth it, even in Summer. Pros: Ribs Cons: nothing else matters more

Just like Texas! 7/23/2007

My husband and I ""commute"" to Texas for work every so often, and we've tried some GOOOOD BBQ. I'd venture to say that Dr Hogley's is on par with some of the best we've had down there. It has a real down home feel too! Pros: YUMMMM Cons: sorta far from where we live, but worth the drive! more

very good beef, ribs etc. Get their sauce b4 you leave. 7/9/2007

I got their beef biscuit and my friend go their ribs. \r \r The nice thing about this place is its not a upscale claim jumper type restaurant. Hoggly Woggley is much more authentic then that. The reason being is that they are old school, they follow traditions and they have time tested recipes that modern places don't have. Pros: Good food great service very good more
