Editorial review from Citysearch 10/19/2012

Come and dance! I have been taking beginning African dance classes for a couple weeks. It is a lot of fun, a good workout, and a great environment. Djoniba breaks down steps for newbies like me, while challenging his more advanced students to perfect their form. He is a warm, funny, and gifted teacher. I am so glad I found him! I highly recommend it! more

Best work out for me 4/3/2012

This is the place to be!!! I have always admired the movements of the dancers, the drums, and excitement in African dance. So as the New Year came around one of my many ""resolutions"" were to lose 12-15 pounds by the summer. I decided to look into African Dance classes. My one concern was time, not being too sure if I would have the time to fit it n so I halted my search for a while. One day I was watching ROHA and noticed that two of the women on the show went to an African Dance class in preparation for their trip to Africa, that's when I decided to search again. I came across Djoniba Dance studio and like everyone else I did my research before I signed up for the class. He was featured on various media sites, news outlets and blogs. I read his biography and what impressed me the most was where he was trained, which was in Africa. So you can call him an adjunct teacher. I can honestly say that I didn't think Djoniba himself was going to be my instructor; I thought it would've been a session with a professional instructor taught by Djoniba. When I realized it was him I was knew I made the right choice. I signed up for the free class and was hooked. I make an effort to attend at minimum once a week. Djoniba is extremely professional and one thing I love about the class is the diversity of students. I encourage you to join if you're looking for excitement, dance therapy, and lose weight get in shape or whatever. Just join and have some fun!!!!!! Btw, I've lost a few pounds so far and after a long day at work I look forward to class. See you there!!!!!!!!!!! more

Most exhilarating workout ever! 3/24/2012

I head to the beginner's class 2 or 3 nights a week because it leaves me with the best feeling! The dance moves and live drums are unbeatable. I've been involved in many sports and workout routines...basketball, kickboxing, weights, etc., but this workout is by far the best. I have seen real results in my body and feel so happy during and after class. Get yourself there! You will feel both physically and spiritually uplifted when you are finished. more

Best African Dance class in NYC ! 3/14/2012

This African dance class is soooooo good !! It was my first experience in African dance, and the teacher was so helpful with me ! We have so much fun !! The first part is cardio training, but in a really funny way, so we can not get bored because we just have fun !! The second part, we learn choreography and how to dance it, all the movement are really well explain for all level. And of course, the live drum are really pushing you beyond you limit, with a big smile, because it's like if you are in Africa !! After the class, you don't have stress anymore, you just feel good and happy !! more

A Great Cultural Workout 7/26/2009

This dance studio offers great dance classes. The teachers are very passionate about dance. The classes are fun and invigorating. Unfortunately, the dance studio has been through some financial problems. The coupons put out on their website draws new students in; however, if you try to use the coupon there is usually problem using it. Pros: Authentic West African Dancing Cons: Djoniba's Coupons are not always honored. more

Joneeba African Dance is the best cardio workout I've ever done! 10/21/2008

I hate running. But in the mid 30s, we have to really do some kind of cardio to keep our bodies toned. I've done many running alternatives but this class is special. Live drum really pushes you beyond the limit . I love NYC! Where else could we do that? I think some (or all?) free trial class ticket is the limited time offer thing. Check the date before you go. Pros: great workout even for non-dancers Cons: nothing I can think of more

this school is a joy 6/7/2003

djoniba dance and drum is simply great. dance to up to nine live drummers alongside professionals and folks who've never taken a class in their life. it's a tough workout (especially great for your butt!) but most strikingly, it's a joyous experience. i especially recommend djoniba, vado, and maguette's beginning african dance classes (most of which feel more like intermediate - but routines repeat from class to class) and julio jean's beginning haitian. there are many other great things happening here - djimbe drum classes, capoeria, dunham technique, samba, bharata nayam...just go! (oh - the changing rooms are a little grubby. but i don't think you'll care!) Pros: fun, great workout, inexpensive Cons: small dressing room more
