Deux Gros Nez is one of those places that a person might feel a bit awkward going into, but rest assured, this isn't a place to be afraid to go into. When I visited this local hangout, there was one table of computer-lovers, all with laptops in tow, checking their e-mail. A large gathering of teenagers crowded around one table, and then there was me and my group of late 20's, and early 30's friends.
The staff is friendly and food service is prompt. The menu is simple, but adequate and even includes a bottomless bowl of cheerios.
The atmosphere is great, but the restaurant is rather small and can become quite crowded. There is also a sizeable flight of stairs to climb to reach the front door, which could pose a problem for older diners.
The Frappes (milkshakes), coffee, teas and desserts are all wonderful after theater or concert fare. The dinners are all a bit healthier than your average coffee shop menu, prepared with natural and whole grain ingredients. I had the beans and cheese bowl, served with tortillas, it was an excellent light dinner. There is also a good selection of vegetarian cuisine on the menu. There is not a wide variety of choices, though, so I definitely would not reccommend DGN for a picky eater.
However, the menu does state that they will make anything for which they have the ingredients, and then lists all of the ingredients they have in stock. If you have something specific you'd like, I imagine they would make it. However, I have never ordered anything in this manner at DGN before.
I recommended Deux Gros Nez as an after-dinner hangout any day, and as a light dinner for the healthy minded consumer.
