I went there for karaoke. They stopped doing it. Changed it to Singers Cabaret (for the serious singer).

Shame on you Coogan's 2/18/2012

Please save yourself some aggravation and don't go to this Restaurant! I went there for Brunch today with my son and daughter and the owner came charging at me because he thought my son was drinking alcohol. Obviously he was not; as I would never allow my son to drink being that he is a minor. This is what happened: I placed my mimosa at the end of the table to keep it away from my active two year old who was knocking everything off the table. Well instead of asking me politely if I was allowing my son to drink, the owner came charging at me and completely embarrassed and humiliated me, even after I had explained to him that my son was not drinking. He said shame on you!! Well I'd like to say shame on you for treating a customer this way! As you can imagine, I left as an unsatisfied customer and livid that someone would have the audacity to treat me with such disrespect. I really hope that you won't visit this restaurant as I don't think he deserves to get our business. more

Rude staff 5/19/2011

I went there with 2 friends to get lunch and had my bottle of water with me. The Waiter came and told me that i can't have it, but he can bring me a glass of water if i want to!!! when i questioned the logic, he was very rude telling me that it is just not allowed and that we can leave if we don't like it.\r \r I was shocked with his conduct and asked for the manager who to my surprise wasn't any nicer. The manager told me that it is the law and when i asked about any documentation for this law, he said ""i don't have to prove you anything, you can leave if you don't like it here""\r \r I went next door ""Columbia Cafe"" and got a really nice service with better food. \r more

Washington Heights Landmark 9/30/2009

One of the first things I learned from professors in graduate school was get to the Coogan's family. I often run into professors and doctors during lunch on Thursday and Friday. I use Coogan's for everything- great for lunch or dinner when my family visits, business lunches or if I need to relax after a stressful week. ( $5 cosmos all weekend) Over the past 2 years I have probably had everything on the menu but have to say my favorite is the Capt Jack burger(with a pint of Guinness) or the horseradish salmon. Whether you're living in the heights or just passing through Coogan's is a must! more

good uptown spot 8/1/2009

this is a good place to go uptown, there are never problems here. off duty cops frequent this spot regularly, as with other civil servants, fire/ems hospital etc. Pros: Police/Fire/ems/Hospital Hangout Cons: Fod is cheap greasy food. more

Great Pub 7/19/2009

I love the bar. I've had lunch a few times here and my experiences have varied. Sometimes the service is great and other times it's terrible, but the bar is always a great place to be. Pros: Friendly, affordable, and chill more

Did I eat food here? 1/24/2009

Horrible. add a little salt or flavor and you might notice you're eating something. Proof. that you still can't get good white-people food in Washington Heights. Stick to West 181st Street if you want to notice that you have eaten. Pros: they have beer, although so does every other bar in NYC Cons: the most miserably average place in WH more

20 year old charged for beer she didnt drink! 8/28/2007

After I moved to Washington Heights, I was pleased to find Coogan's. It had a comfortable, grab a beer and burger with friends kinda vibe. The food tastes pretty good, even if the menu is super meat oriented and hardly diet friendly. So first impressions, good.\r \r But Coogans bad side creeps up on you. One, I feel ill about an hour I eat there, every single time. (I know, why do I go back?) Nothing serious, just crampy, unhappy stomach filled with lead.\r \r Two. The service. When I first started going, I often had one or two servers I thought were absoluty wonderful, fast, cheerful, and knowledgeable. (they both had reddish hair, like me, so we liked to joke about being the lone red-heads in wash-heights he he). Then one day they were just gone. I asked the manager and she told me that the were rac ist thiefs. Even if that was the case, I hardly felt she should be telling me that! That same night I was charged for a bunch of beers I never had (Im not even 21!) and when I complained to that same manager she just laughed and basically called me a liar. When I told her I was only 20, and that if they HAD served me beer it would have been illegal, she had some big guy come to our table and demand we pay before they called THE POLICE!!!!\r \r We paid the bill (including the beer) but will never return. Its too bad as its so close to school, but I dont need to be over charged and disrespected by surly restaurant managers. Pros: location, hours Cons: manager threatens customers, food sits like a rock in pit of stomach more

Great fun.. 11/16/2006

This bar/ restaurant is one of the many uptown spots to visit. Great for family as well as after work crowd to visit this establishment. The crowd is diverse, from college students to doctors. Great food and ambiance. The bartenders will take care of you and are always friendly. Just an overall spot to have food drinks and oh of course Kareoke on certain nights. So do visit. more

Best Next To Home 1/18/2006

I have been assigned to a temporary post in Washington Heights even though I am from upstate. Someone told me about about Coogans so I gave it a try. The food is great and the Bartenders are very friendly, it is a very diverse but comfortable atmosphere. more

best in the heights 3/8/2003

i work nearby and am a regular at coogans. this is the nicest restaurant in washington heights. the staff are friendly. the food is good also. i recommend the captain jack burger, delicious. another must try, if you make it to dessert, is the brownie supreme. there are also monthly specials that add variation to us regulars. every now and then they offer chicken penne in vodka sauce with mushrooms (not sure of exact name) and this too is very good. afterwork many cpmc employees come here to relax and have a drink. i like my jd and coke, which the bartenders skimp the jd sometimes, unless they know me. buybacks aren't as frequent as most other bars, unless you become well acquainted with the bartenders and you might get lucky. i don't go to coogans as frequently, but overall i would recommend this place if you're in the area. Pros: friendly staff, monthly special meals Cons: dress code, buybacks not frequent more

I think Coogan's is a great place. the people are friendly and the food is good. Try the RIBS. I love going Karaoke night. The DJ plays great music, the equipment is top notch and the Hostess is supportive, witty, down to earth and lots of fun. They run a class act. The singers are awesome too. Go check it out. It does get crowded so go early if you want to sing. The guys are cute. Lot's of Cops. :) more
